The final season of Callan and it starts with his funeral.

Everyone from the section is at Callan's church service looking a bit upset. Lonely turns up late and thinks the vicar is talking about the wrong man. Well Callan was never that peaceful.

It turns out Callan's death was a cover. He has in fact been captured by the Russians when on assignment in East Germany.

Tortured for months, those darn Ruskies have even taken away his toupe.

Hunter decides to send Cross to pick up a man called Richmond. He seems to be a Soviet agent in Britain.

Callan soon realises his value. He is offered in exchange for Richmond.

There is in essence a mirroring of Richmond and Callan. Both men are tortured by the British and Russians. When Richmond and Callan briefly exchange a few words, they do so in the understanding that they are professionals.

The false notes were how would Lonely knew of Callan's funeral and why does Lonely think that Callan is not dead. Surely Lonely knew that Callan worked for the government and was involved in secret government work.

Even Hunter sending out Cross to shut up Lonely looked hollow. At least it gives another indication of how sadistic Cross can be.

I think Cross was a touch disappointed to find out that Callan was still alive. Cross in no longer top dog at the section.
