When Bobby Brady calls the stadium to speak with Joe Namath, he leaves the family's phone number: 555-6161. Five years before, Maureen McCormick was up for the title role in NBC's production of Heidi which ultimately went to Jennifer Edwards. The film aired on November 17, 1968 following a key game involving Joe Namath and the Jets against the Oakland Raiders. With the Jets up 32-29 with less than 2 minutes to play, NBC abruptly cut away from the game on the East Coast to air Heidi on time. The Raiders scored twice in a eight second span to take a 43-32 victory. NBC apologized the next day amid the outrage it caused. This prompted the National Football League to stipulate in all its Television Network contracts that all games involving teams in the competing markets be aired until their conclusion.
Joe Namath was the fourth, and last, sports star to appear on The Brady Bunch, and the only one of the four who did not play for a Los Angeles-based sports team at the time this episode was filmed. Namath was playing for the New York Jets. He played for the Los Angeles Rams during the 1977 NFL season, his last before retirement from pro football.

Actors Robert Reed, Eve Plumb and Christopher Knight all appeared in "Mannix", and both shows made use of the set of the Brady's home. The opening credits of both TV shows feature the same aesthetic, with images of characters moving across a black background.
