Caesar is indignant when he reads that he was a dictator. This should not have surprised him nor made him angry. During the Roman Republic, "dictator" was an official appointed position within government. It was common for senators and important patricians to be named dictator for a brief period of time and it did not hold a negative connotation in the Republic. Julius Caesar actually held one of the Roman Republic's longest dictatorships. He was also the last Roman dictator.
