HERBIE BACK, BY POPULAR DEMAND.
tcchelsey19 May 2024
Series writer Buddy Atkinson had to continue the "Herbie" story, it was so insane. All us kids back in day loved this episode.

We also get to catch a glimpse of actor George Barrows, who played many gorillas in tv sitcoms.

George was a popular actor, but his talent for immitating gorillas, and especially Herbie, got him the most work.

The episode picks up from the last, Herbie leaving the Clampetts, though everybody wants him back.

Mr. Drysdale pulls another fast one and bribes the guy who plays Herbie (Barrows) to keep up the charade so Jed and everyone else will be happy. Classic scene -- Mr. Drysdale and Miss Jane driving Herbie back to the Clampetts mansion, the gorilla dressed in a suit and tie and smoking a cigar?

Definitely inspired by GILLIGANS ISLAND, with all the wild (fake) animals, and in a clever way, Atkinson also borrowed from the ADDAMS FAMILY because the situations were so bizarre. Ellie is even dancing by the pool with Herbie, who is now wearing a pink hat and shorts -- and has a rose in his mouth? The rose bit borrowed from Gomez Addams.

Great running gag with Granny's horrible stew. And Mr. Drysdale actually switching places with Burrows and now in the gorilla costume?

One of the best. SEASON 5 EPISODE 7 remastered color. The dvd box set has a classic color cover family picture, collectors edition.
