The Missing Book
AaronCapenBanner28 February 2016
Thomas Banacek(George Peppard) is called in on a case involving a valuable book inside a high security display case further protected by a quickly closing door that is still stolen, despite the sophisticated alarm system! It is called the Book Of Hours that is owned by an extremely wealthy, powerful, ruthless, yet crippled man named Walter Tyson(played by David Wayne) who wants it returned at any cost, as it belonged to his beloved late wife, though Tyson himself isn't beloved, especially by his employees(like Stella Stevens)... Ted Cassidy costars. Typical entry is still good, especially Wayne, with a solution that may seem obvious only in retrospect.

Hope the book was a good read

David Wayne guest stars in this Banacek episode where a priceless book called The Book Of Hours is put on display at a museum and a foolproof security system is fooled. That's when insurance company men like David Doyle always send for George Peppard.

To make sure the item is returned and fast Wayne wants to put Peppard on his own personal payroll. Though he's now crippled Wayne is one of those ruthless tycoons who will stop at nothing to get what he wants.

In fact that very ruthlessness and cavalier disregard for others is what leads to this crime.

You always love the way Banacek explains it and makes it so obvious what went wrong. Especially in this story.

The writing isn't quite up to par on this one.

Let me make this clear...."Ten Thousand Dollars a Page" is an enjoyable episode of "Banacek". But although I liked the show and other episodes I've seen so far, the writing of this one isn't quite as good as others. The plot holes and logical jumps at the end make this one good but second rate.

When the story begins, an invaluable book disappears from a heavily guarded museum display. Taking the book just seems impossible. But through the course of the investigation, Banacek comes to see that the man who owned the book is a rich jerk and his employees also seem like a bunch of jerks. It's so bad that you find yourself rooting for the criminals!

The solution to the crime is interesting....but pay attention when you watch, as Banacek really makes complete guesses about who is involved in the crime...guesses that betray poor writing. A slight re-write could have filled up these holes....and it sure needed it. Sadly, without the holes, it would have been simply terrific!

One of the Better Banacek Episodes

Warning: Spoilers
***SPOILERS POSSIBLE***

There aren't many episodes of Banacek (16, I believe). I've seen about 10 of them. I can say that of those 10, this one is one of the better ones. Not too much complexity and outrageous "solutions" although we do have the "trap-door"/false bottom trick YET AGAIN! I'm not Banacek, but I DID figure out 95% of the mystery

Kudos to David Wayne for an EXCELLENT performance as the self proclaimed tyrant, Walter Tyson. His performance is a major reason why this episode worked very well.

Disappointing episode.

Warning: Spoilers
I really don't like this episode. It gives a huge hint on how the crime was committed. If you are good at puzzles you can figure it out fairly easily. Also, you can automatically guess where the item is. The pedestal would have to contain the wires for the security system. Also, it makes the security people seem very stupid. I really like David Wayne. He seems very cantankerous here. I hate his hairstyle. The lost item is very nice. I wish it was a better episode.
