Thomas Banacek(George Peppard) is called in on a case involving a prized thoroughbred horse that somehow went missing/was swapped for another horse during a run around the track. The current owner named Katherine Wells(played by Anne Francis) is getting out of the business, though the horse's trainer(played by Tim O'Connor) and his beautiful daughter(played by Lane Bradbury) are very concerned about their beloved horse, and unhappy with money-minded Katherine, though there are other suspects like a rival horse owner(played by John Crawford) and his associate. Just who is responsible, and how was the switch pulled off? Entertaining and authentic-looking episode with a typically clever solution(that owes a nod to the celebrated "Sherlock Homes" short story 'Silver Blaze'). Pamela Hensley has a memorable guest spot at the beginning.

Carlie' gone.....and so is some horse!

In the previous half dozen episodes or so, the producers of "Banacek" were toying with the formula of the show. Instead of Banacek simply being a playboy, they introduced Carlie....a woman who was both a competitor and potential lover. She was abrasive and annoying....and apparently by "Horse of a Slightly Different Color" they gave up on this experiment...at least for now (she did return for the following episode only). For this, I was very grateful!
As you'd expect in a "Banacek" episode, a seemingly impossible theft occurs. In this case, a $5,000,000 racehorse disappear and is replaced by another horse as it circles the track. Banacek is called in to investigate and twice nearly gets killed. The second time is so sloppy, I deducted a point from the overall score.
Despite this slopping attempted killing at the end of the show (my wife clearly was annoyed by it), it's a decent episode....made all the better since Carlie was no where to be seen. Worth seeing.
