When the lads try to think which of the Magnificent Seven each would be, they decide on the following - Dennis is Yul Brynner, Wayne is Horst Buchholz, Barry is Robert Vaughn (Neville suggests Yul Brynner but this is turned down by Bomber), Oz is James Coburn, Neville is Steve McQueen, Bomber is Brad Dexter (the lads can't initially remember the actor's name, but Moxey remembers it later) and Moxey is Charles Bronson (Oz later suggests Robert Vaughn when Moxey runs from the police).
Oz mentions Brad Dexter saved Frank Sinatra's life. On May 10, 1964, Dexter saved both Frank Sinatra's life and the life of Ruth Koch (wife of Producer Howard Koch), during production of the World War II film, "None But the Brave", in Kaui, Hawaii. Sinatra and Koch were swimming at a beach when they were swept out to sea by the outgoing tide and nearly drowned in high billowing waves. Sinatra's co-star Dexter swam out and rescued them together and were not able to reach back to shore for nearly 45 minutes. In the waves, Sinatra reportedly became separated and murmured "It's all over...please take care of my kids...I'm going to die." Towards the end, both Sinatra and Koch had fallen unconscious for several minutes before two surfers arrived to help Dexter take them to shore. Dexter was later awarded a Red Cross medal for his bravery. When Dexter later advised him not to marry the then-20 year old Mia Farrow, who was about 25 years Sinatra's junior, Sinatra ended their friendship.
When Wayne chooses Horst Buchholz, someone remarks that he chose the "Kraut". Oddly enough, this insulting (and frequently used) name for Germans is never used by the lads in series 1 which was based in Germany. The lads nearly always referred to Germans as "Erics" when they were in Dusseldorf.
In joke: When at Thornley Manor, Moxey remarks that he stayed in a place like it once, and that it was a borstal near Prestatyn. The prison scene at the beginning of series 2, when Moxey and another prisoner are plastering a room for Mr Galloway, was filmed in the same building.
The tower on the side of Thornley Manor was built by the production crew, to make the building look more Victorian. It is not part of the original structure.
