There's No Place Like... Willow?
SleepTight6664 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
There's No Place Like... Willow? - Although a great, funny, and character developing episode. I don't think it was good enough for a season finale. I loved 'Cordy' as a princess, with her prince 'Groo' - I loved all 'Lorne's scenes, and especially the one including his mother. I love all the 'Fred' scenes - she was just too adorable. But it still falls short here and there, too much endless battles and not enough,.. ANGEL. At the end of the episode 'Cordy' kills the evil priest by decapitating him (Which was awesome) and they go back home with the crazy Taco-lady, where 'Willow' is waiting for them. I loved how 'Angel' knew it was about 'Buffy' even if the Wicca hadn't spoken a word. It was certainly a great episode, but nothing Epic. CORDELIA: You have served me well and loyally these last... two and a half days. I'm very fond of you Lamara. MARELDA: Marelda. CORDELIA: I knew that. MARELDA: Of course you did, exalted one. You know all. You must cut my tongue from my worthless skull! CORDELIA: No! No cutting. What is it with you people and mutilation? MARELDA: We don't have a lot of... entertainment. (9.5 out of 10)

Warning: Spoilers
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE PLZTH GRB

The Good; The basket scene alone makes this wonderful. All told it's pretty good stuff though, a revolution in three eps.

The Bad; It seems rather contrite that the entire world of Pylea is ruled by this small band of priests and their tiny army.

Best line: Wes; "Why do people keep putting me in charge of things?" Gunn; (exasperated) "I have NO idea!". In many ways Gunn is the straight man of Angel Investigations, constantly staggered at the rest of the gangs grand notions.

Jeez, how did they get away with that? Severed Lorne's head, Pylea has a 'mutilation chamber'? Everyone keeps spitting on poor Lorne. The Groo sets his own hand on fire to intimidate Angel before they fight. He feels pain but just overcomes it!

Apocalypses: 5

Angel Clichés Inverting the Hollywood cliché; Lovely heart to heart between Wes and Angel over the fireside but we later learn that Wes doesn't necessarily believe it, he just needs Angel to.

In disguise; 8

DB get's his shirt off; 12

Cordy's tattoo; 6,

Cheap Angel; 7

Fang Gang go evil: Cordy: 2 Angel: 2

Alternate Fang Gang: Cordy: 2 Angel: 6

Characters killed: 37

Recurring characters killed; 6;

Total number of Angel Investigations: 4, Angel, Cordy, Wes and Gunn

Packing heat; Wes; 3 Doyle; 1 Angel; 1

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: Cordy: 2 ?+Wilson/Hacksaw Beast Angel: 2; Buffy and Darla Wes; 2; Virginia and the bleached blonde

Kinky dinky: Cordy touches the Groo 'by accident' in the dark. She refers to Groo and her on their wedding night having a 'shared burden lifting' but denies that she has much experience. She doesn't like the idea of Com-shukking in front of the priests. The priests tell Groo that if Angel should win he will ravage and defile Cordy again and again until she has no more screaming in her.

Captain Subtext; Do the Covenant represent the Taliban? Check out the slave-girls expression when Cordy orders her to strip naked. Also check out that Lorne's eyes flicker open to watch. Lorne observes that Groo works out when Cordy rubs him up against him. When Cordy tells Groo she loves him Angel is a little affronted that she doesn't say she loves him too. Gunn's speech at the end neatly sums up post American Civil War history.

Know the face, different character; 2

Parking garages; 5,

Buffy characters on Angel; 16 Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla, Dru, Master, Anne, Willow and Harmony

Questions and observations; To judge by his remarks when he and Wes are going to be executed Gunn is a Christian who believes when he dies he'll go to Jesus. CC can scream like a Classic Dr Who companion (as can Dawn, see Shadow). Angel doesn't snore. In demon form he rather resembles the Incredible Hulk. Lorne doesn't have 5 toes on each foot although we don't know how many he does have. Wes is faced with the General's classic dilemma of having to sacrifice some of his men for the greater good. How do they get Angel's car out of Caritas? Willow at the end is heartbreaking, how much can Alysson Hannigan emote with just her expression?

Marks out of 10; 8/10 good end to an enjoyable arc but you're keen to get back to LA.

The show have Never been better than this
nicofreezer27 September 2022
Except for the first 2 episode of this tv show, that were Amazing, since then Angel have Never been able to give us 2 great episodes in a row ( at least 9/10) But this little adventure of 3 episodes, finally give us greatness back ! And for the first Time in Angel, 3 episodes in a row are great ! 3 episodes with a 9/10 quality content.

It was a fresh bowl of air from the boring Wolf and hart story line or with Drusila.

These 3 episodes got everything it take to be entertaining, an adventure , humor, love friendship ( that Wesley speeck to Angel " you'll be back" give me the chills for the first time in this tv show.

Season 2 is saved by this great ending, but I will still put Season 1 above.

Season 2= 8/10.

The second season finale is an all around great episode
katierose29527 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I think that this is the first episode where Wes is really in charge of Team Angel. Technically, he's been the boss since "Redefinition." But, here in "There's No Place Like Plrtz Glrb" he finally starts asserting his authority. Wesley comes into his own in this episode, giving orders and directing the action. For the first time, it's Wes making the hard choices and sacrificing people for the greater good of the mission. Gunn, the Pylean rebels and even Angel begin following Wes's instructions, setting the stage for the stronger person Wes will become over the next three seasons. This is also the season two finale and it's an all around great episode. I really recommend that you see it if you're watching the show on DVD.

"There's No Place Like Plrtz Glrb" revolves around Team Angel trying to escape Pylea. It picks up right where "Through the Looking Glass" left off. Wes and Gunn are kidnapped by Pylean rebels. Angel is traumatized by the demon in him gaining control and is hiding in Fred's cave. He doesn't believe that he will ever be able to face his friends again. And Lorne has been executed as a traitor. His head is deliver to Cordy to teach her a lesson about who really holds the power in Pylea. Luckily, Lorne's people don't die when you cut off their heads. You have to chop apart their bodies, too. The Grooslugg gets to Lorne's body in time to save it, so Lorne's family will be able to put him back together.

Meanwhile, Wes is elected leader of the rebel forces. He and Gunn helped fight the Pylean soldiers. The rebels are so impressed that they ask Wes to help them devise a plan to storm the castle. The rebels want to bring down the government and Wes and Gunn want to rescue Cordy. They join forces. Back at Fred's cave, She and Angel fight off another attack from the Pylean soldiers. Angel finally realizes that he can't hide from his friends or from who he really is. He goes to meet up with Wes and Gunn. At the castle, Cordy learns that if she sleeps with Groo, she will loose her visions. Although, the horrible head aches that come with her powers are getting worse, she can't give them up. She tells Groo that they can't be together. Then, she gets a vision of a green demon attacking a Groo. Cordy warns him that he can't get into any battles with the demon or it will kill him.

Wes plans an attack on the castle. Gunn is upset that a lot of rebels will die in the fight. Wes explains that trying to save everyone will just get more people killed in the end. Wes also wants Angel to fight the Grooslugg, who is the defender of the Pylean government. Angel is worried that if he vamps out again, he won't be able to get back to "normal." Wes tells Angel that he believes in him and he knows that the demon will never control him. Angel goes off to fight the Grooslugg. He beats him in battle and, in the end, is able to regain control of himself. Wes, Gunn and the rebels get into the castle and defeats the Pylean forces. Cordy decapitates the head priest before he can activate a fail safe devise that would kill all the humans. Leaving Groo in charge of the kingdom, Team Angel finally heads back to LA.

There are some great parts to this episode. The first time, I saw "Through the Looking Glass," was was really upset. I hated the idea of Lorne dying. So when "There's No Place Like Plrtz Glrb" come on and Lorne was okay, I was really relieved. I just love Cordy carrying Lorne's head around. Poor Lorne is whacked against pillars and stuffed in a basket, his suit is destroyed and his mother dumps his body on the lice pile. You just have to laugh. I also like Cordy's proclamations, freeing the slaves and outlawing polyester. And I'm glad that she decapitated the Pylean priest guy. He so deserved it. Although I do always laugh when he delivers the line, "I will kill every cow in the world." He's just so serious and the line is so surreal that I really enjoy it. Finally, I love the end of the episode. Everyone's so happy to be back on earth and they're joking around with each other. Then they arrive at the Hyperion and find Willow there, looking sad and depressed. "Buffy." Angel whispers, guessing the reason for Willow's visit. It's just a great way to remind Team Angel all of the real problems that still face them back in this dimension. Plus, it brings in Buffy's death over in BTVS season five's "The Gift." (On a side note, "The Gift" really is one of the greatest BTVS episodes ever. If you haven't seen it, you should go buy the whole season today.) Buffy and Angel may be on different shows, but their relationship continues to connect them. It's sweet.

On the down side, I'm sorry that this is the last episode with Lorne's family. They were really funny and it's a shame that they never come to LA to visit him.

My favorite part of the episode: Wes's reactions to the newly liberated Pylean citizens genuflecting to Cordy as she sweeps out of the castle. "Should people really be bowing in a free society?" Cordelia's blasé reply, "These things take time," just cracks me up every time.

Season Two
ametaphysicalshark19 April 2008
Season Two of "Angel" is just as strong as Season One in terms of consistency, but improves on it in terms of having a strong story arc. The Darla episodes were great, the Wolfram & Heart story is starting to work nicely, and even the Pylea episodes, which really should have been weak and maybe belong more on "Buffy" than on "Angel" in terms of tone, are really strong and enjoyable episodes.

That said, season two also has more great episodes than season one, with memorable episodes like "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been?" (a highlight of television in general as far as I'm concerned), "Darla", "Reunion", and "Reprise".

The character writing is strong, the plot is handled excellently, and "Angel" remains a strong and memorable series through its second season, which does not improve in terms of consistency on its first, but certainly improves on its first season in the quality of the season story arcs.

Average rating based on all episodes: 7.68/10

Angel's Inner Demon
Samuel-Shovel19 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
In "There's No Place Like Plrtz Glrb", Wesley and Gunn team up with the rebels to storm the castle and rescue Cordy. Angel, with the help of his new friend Fred, challenge the Groosalugg to a duel as a distraction. Cordy attempts to find Lorne's body for him before it is destroyed.

Compared with Buffy's season finale, Angel's felt a little flat. This entire story arc was a bit humdrum. What I thought was going to happen was that they were going to be sucked through a portal because Glory had used the key opening up the dimension but that never really happens. Willow's brief appearance at the end really sets up a sad, morose beginning to next season for both shows.

Wesley: You try not to get anybody killed, you wind up getting everybody killed.
bombersflyup3 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There's No Place Like Plrtz Glrb is about Wes and Gunn joining the rebel forces in order to storm the castle and defeat the high priests, while Angel draws away the Groosalugg.

Not much of a season finale, winding up this tiresome plot. Wesley shows Gunn he's willing to make the hard decisions that need to be made, which shocks Gunn, and Angel has to overcome the demon inside of him. The positive to come out of the episode, Fred coming back with them and thus the inclusion of Amy Acker to the cast.

Season 2
Red_Identity6 February 2014
Yes! Wasn't as big of a jump in quality like Buffy's first to second season, simply because Season 1 of this was already really good, but all around more consistent and a better arc. I absolutely loved the Darla arc, although it felt sort of unfinished. And here's the thing... the final four episodes were fine episodes, good in their own rights, but honestly, they just seemed too out of place compared to the rest of the season. They seemed too light-hearted, and I also expected something more in the season-long Darla arc. I don't mind too much, but definitely sort of don't "fit" with the season. In a way they did though, especially for Cordelia and the feelings she had been experiencing in the second half of the season towards her visions and her self esteem. I don't know, I sense that maybe Whedon didn't want to overdo the darkness because of Buffy's fifth season and its ending? Or maybe it was to have the gut punch of Buffy dying hit them even harder? Either way, the final scene with Willow was pretty amazingly done.
