Barney's Sidecar

As I was watching this episode, Opie was using a woodburning set in the courthouse. Andy came in and told him to take it home. As Opie was leaving, he says to Andy "Abbysinia" and Andy replies "see ya Samoa". For years I couldn't figure out what they were saying. Finally, I had to Google it and find out. It is an old expression and response once used quite a lot. Now that I know, it's just more useless info to clutter my brain.

This is a very original and real life episode. Love the way Andy and Barney discuss letting the truckers pick up a little speed before reaching the hill so they can get over and the "understanding" the police had with the truckers that barney just cant grasp. He very wisely "just wishes (Barney) would do things in moderation." Yes I was a bit shocked that Aunt Bee would even think of the wire trick used to catch Nazis. But it does offer some sharp humor. And why shouldnt Aunt Bee show a touch of the macabre. I think this is a great episode featuring the comedic skills of Don Knotts and the wise oversight of Sheriff Andy. Perhaps its a "10"

Give 'em 40, they'll take 45, give 'em. 45, they'll take 50...

Barney is such a handful for Andy. Nothing is ever easy. Fun to see the loafers tease, and mock Barney. He's really a menace driving recklessly downtown. I especially always liked the speed progression story. Also, Aunt Bee's about the Nazis.

Funny epilogue this time Andy looking silly. Another great episode to a solid season.

Warning: Spoilers
Aunt Bea was discussing with Andy about how they used to string wires across the roads to stop the Nazis on their motorcycles! "Not that I want Barney decapitated! " Ouch! Aunt Bea! Couldn't believe I heard that!

Barney buys a surplus motorcycle with a sidecar, like those used in war. Soon he is using it to torment the town, marking tires, slowing trucks down, running into people who are jaywalking. Andy would like to toss the thing off a cliff but, again, doesn't want to hurt Barney's feelings. This one is so far fetched it's a bit hard to watch.
