- Synopsis - Rescue Lois is assigned to work at the Carbide mine on a story concerning the mine and the effect it has on the town when Pop Polgase is trapped in a cave-in and Lois decides to attempt a direct rescue entering the mine under orders to leave the mine rescue to the professionals. Clark drove Lois to Carbide, but he heads to the Washington Bureau office on other Planet business, saying hello to Harry Hansen, its reporter in charge. Clark finishes his business, says good-bye to Harry, and manages to miss all the notices of the cave-in, i.e. notice on wire machine in Harry's office, headlines in the newspaper, announcement on the radio as he travels back to see how Lois is doing. Lois is not going let Pop lie in the mine without trying to help him escape. She changes into a miner's bib overalls, packs a thermos for Pop, doffs a miner's lantern hard hat, and enters the mine looking for Pop by calling out his name and following the sound of his voice. Lois manages to get herself trapped along with Pop as the methane gas begins seeping into their area while Clark arrives at the mine entrance wondering what the excitement is concerning. Sims tells Clark about Lois and Pop trapped in the mine as Superman appears and begins his own rescue operations. Superman enters the mine, removing timber and boulders to get at the trapped, he frees Pop and Lois helps Pop to walk outside while Superman holds the timber supports. Superman checks on Lois and Pop as they receive first aid, he is assured of their recovery by Lafe, and retreats the area. Clark appears, happy to see Lois, promising to drive her back to Metropolis, where she says "Superman finally took me out."
