A somewhat decent picture
Gravesofthetrust5 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
*May Contain Spoilers* I absolutely hated the previous Quiroz bros. film I saw (Hood of the Living Dead), I hated it so very very much. So needless to say I was expecting their vampire movie The Damned to be more or less like Hood of the Living Dead, but with vampires. However I must say that this movie was actually pretty enjoyable.

Many of the actors from Hood return in this picture, but for some reason I liked them better in this than in Hood (I attribute it to the fact that this movie had a better story/script), they also seemed to be able to act better in this movie than in Hood. The story was pretty entertaining, if not a tad stale and bland, but it served its purpose (chances are you're not here for a deep movie story, but for vampire action) and did a somewhat good job setting up the various fight scenes between the humans and the vampires.

But sadly, this movie is not all that great when you get right down to it. If you read any of the synopsis' for the movie or seen trailers for The Damned it makes it seem as though there's going to be a lot of vampire killing (I don't mean to nitpick, but I don't think four people make a clan) or that Todd Bridges seems like this big badass vampire hunter mercenary guy, when really he's just an amateur vigilante. It also makes it seem as though there's going to be a hell of a lot more feedings (I think there was a grand total of two), and that there would have been more fight scenes with the vampires, but sadly there wasn't. Another thing that detracts from the enjoyment of this movie is (in my opinion) the inappropriate use of "fast-paced punk rock." During seemingly calm scenes there's that punk-rock playing (such as when a detective is at an old abandoned house), and during the scenes when the vampires do strike, it's sort of this fast paced moody stereotypical horror music. It seems like it should've been the other way around.

The movie is also too damn short. I don't know if it was due to their budget or what, but the movie just sort of whizzed by and then ended. Also don't expect much closure from the main story, as the ending leaves it open for a sequel (what is with the Quiroz brothers and not ending their horror movies?!). Also don't expect the world out of the special effects (especially when they kill the vampires :shudder: bad CG) and don't expect Oscar-caliber acting (not that you would from a low-budget flick such as this), for its purpose The Damned is a somewhat decent picture. Its not too great, but its not god-awful, and it's certainly a hell of a lot better than Hood of the Living Dead, which they happen to reference in this movie, but it has a lot of little problems that I think take away from the quality of it, it also really bugged me that the cover art for the DVD was amazingly similar to that of the Russian vampire movie Night Watch, but that's just me.

There are of course better vampire movies out there but for a low-budget indie movie it's not the worst one around. Despite the cheesy effects, the annoying soundtrack (yep, disliked the punk rock), the poor acting at some points (the principle actors did a fairly good job), and random theories about vampires (what other movie says vampires can only enter a house if they're invited in?) The Damned was a bad movie, but an enjoyable one at that.

Cheesy low budget attempt
alr1262 October 2006
I took the advice of the previous reviewer that gave the movie a 10. All I can really say is that I want 2 kilos of whatever this guy is on. The special affects, okay, it was low budget, so do not take FX into account. The acting, stiff and shallow at BEST! The characters had no depth, the actors put no feeling into their parts, it seemed as if they were just reading the scripts. The same could have been done by a few people sitting around a living room one night with no scenery, FX, etc. Maybe the storyline was fair, reminds me of some low budget flicks from the 60's. I did like the punk soundtrack, it fit the subject matter. I wanted to give the movie a 1, but, hey, at least they tried to make a movie. All in all, it MIGHT be worth seeing if there were no other movies around or at the store. Not the best movie, certainly not the worst. As I said before, at least somebody tried to make a movie.

I didn't know a movie could be this bad.

This has got to be the worst movie I have ever seen. It has the acting and production quality of a low budget porn, but without any sex to make it worth watching.

You won't believe it. It could be filmed in your living room by a bunch of high school kids. The vampire scenes use obviously fake blood and the actors read their lines with all the realism and personality of Al Gore.

The plot is unbelievable and left me laughing at every turn. Maybe Saturday Night Live could have put together a vampire spook like this, but unfortunately these guys were serious.

Garbage!
reeves200217 August 2007
I have no idea how this piece of sh*t managed to find distribution. And i'm angry it ended up being a rental.I wish that I watched the trailer first because then I would have realized how bad this b-movie was and would have saved money.I am so sick of renting movies that have interesting cover art and claim to be something they are not.I swear to Christ they probably paid more for the cover art than the movie itself just to deceive people.I turned it off after going from chapter to chapter because it kept getting worse!I wasn't gonna waste any time on this garbage. The acting was atrocious and the special effects were laughable.I can't believe there is anyone out there who actually likes these types of moronic and tasteless movies. It should be a crime to make something this lame and to use vampirism as it's plot.

Imagine Fright Night without a budget
Leofwine_draca23 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
THE DAMNED is a really bad shot on video horror flick that attempts to remake the story of FRIGHT NIGHT on a budget of, well, nothing. A boring guy discovers that his new neighbours are vampires, so he brings in a few buddies to help combat them. Aside from some plastic fangs and a few make up scenes, this is boring indeed, with wooden acting and pointless performances.

Fangs and Blood and fast PUNK ROCKKK
eighties11 July 2006
Netflix delivered this DVD and I slapped it in immediately. I had to see Todd Bridges as a vampire. I was disappointed to learn he was only a private dick searching for the vampire clan. Needless to say I found this little low budget Didi a joy. I sound like my dad. It was pretty much what you expect from a horror DVD. Blood guts and special FX. The soundtrack KILLS. All the music in this thing ROCKS! I liked that the vampires were of all demographics and my favorite character was the chubby detective who's laughs at the kid that tells him that there are vampires in the city. Then he is face to face with one himself. Buy it if you're a true horror fan but if you want some teen girl Hollywood crap this isn't your cup of tea. Tootles!

Cool low budget flick
rogerebertisfat12 July 2006
Don't listen to these other reviewers. They've completely exaggerated the movie. It's really not that bad. It's actually a decent little flick. I thought the music was great. Reminds me of old '80s punk like 45 grave, only with a dude singing. But as far as the movie goes, I think anyone who trashes it are taking themselves and this movie way too seriously. The truth is there are TONS of worse movies out there, some of them even making it to theaters. And in my opinion, it was decent. It had me entertained. Besides the music, it had some good make- up effects (I don't know what movie that foreign dude saw, 'cause there's no masks worn in the movie at all. It was all make-up) and plenty of blood. And I thought all the vampires did really good. Was it the greatest horror movie? No. But it was cool for a low budgeted horror movie. I gave it a 10 'cause these other reviewers are just being haters. I'd say, watch it and enjoy it and then form your own opinion. But me, I liked it and I've seen more horror movies (good and bad) to know what I'm talking about.

Definitely worth a $4 rent mates

Warning: Spoilers
If you want a good low budget thriller than this is for you. If you want BLADE then go to a theater. My favourite flicks have always been direct to video and I've always been a big FULL MOON fan. This is better than most Full Moon titles and definitely better than 90% of the vampire DVDs out there. It starts off with a bang, all action and blood as a clan of Vampires move into a new city (Oakland) as neighborhood kids start suspecting the truth about them they get worried and want to kill the kids. Along come two private eyes to help them rid of the Damned. I liked it and absolutely LOVED the punk tracks that played though the whole movie. Some of the effects were Full Moon looking but like I said, don't expect a $125,000,000 Blade movie. Low budget rules.

Interesting movie but not as great as it could have been
Captain_Couth27 February 2009
The Damned (2006)is about a pack of vampires who move from town to town looking for new places to feed upon. They decide to hang out in the hood and prey upon it's denizens. A nosy young dude sees the pack on the prowl and freaks out. After he dispatches one of the "undead" he's scared out of his mind a looks for anyone who'll not only believe him but help him against the vamp pack. Can the young dude find anyone who'll help him out against the undead neighbors?

A fun short film that could have been better but it's alright. If you like these kind of DTV films then you'll enjoy this one. Don't expect any kind of monsterpiece. Watch for Todd Bridges in a guest starring role.
