Husband from hell!
Yonilikka-2211 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
'Edie' ( Gwendolyn Watts ) is a clippie on the buses by day. By night, she washes floors at the local hospital. Her husband 'Alec' ( Milo O'Shea ) hasn't worked for five years and shows no interest whatever in changing the situation. He is is a lazy devil who watches horse racing on television all day, drinks beer and chain-smokes. He expects his wife to cook his dinner in addition to her two jobs. One day, Edie announces that she is pregnant. Alec is livid, and blames her pregnancy on her own selfishness. Then Edie drops a bombshell. She isn't sure if Alec is the father...

"Pity Poor Edie...Married To Him" is a good vehicle for the talented O'Shea and Watts. When we first see Edie on a bus, it is hard not to be reminded of her role as 'Iris' the clippie in two episodes of 'On The Buses'. O'Shea's character is not unlike an Irish version of Rab C. Nesbitt, although lacking Rab's gift for philosophy. When the doctor ( Michael Burrell ) tells Alec that Edie is expecting not one baby, but four, Alec ( who'd walked out on Edie rather than get a job ) senses an opportunity to make money, and moves back in with her.

Funniest moment - the final scene in the maternity ward. Edie has given birth and when Alec sees the children, he is left in absolutely no doubt that they aren't his!
