The Pixies’ new album, “Indie Cindy,” is streaming a week ahead of its release. Listen below. The 12-track set combines the band’s recent EPs — “Ep-1,” “Ep-2,” and “Ep-3” — with three new songs. “Indie Cindy” is the Pixies’ first album since 1991's “Trompe le Monde.” “Doolittle,” “Bossanova” and “Trompe Le Monde” producer Gil Norton returned for the new album, but former bassist and co-founder Kim Deal — who left the band in 2013 — does not appear.

Kim Deal lasted 25 years in the Pixies, but her replacement Kim Shattuck put down her bass after only four months. Based on Shattuck's tweet that announced the news on Friday, it wasn't her decision to leave. Shattuck is the founder of Southern California rock band the Muffs, which she took a break from to play bass and sing backup vocals for the Pixies' first leg of its world tour. The Pixies recently confirmed it will appear at the 2014 Primavera Sound festival, including a Barcelona date with Arcade Fire and Neutral Milk Hotel. The band's North American tour kicks...

The Pixies have parted ways with recently added bassist Kim Shattuck. "Super disappointed to learn that my time with the Pixies ended today," Shattuck wrote Friday on Facebook (via Pitchfork). "Amazing experience. Looking forward to focusing my attention back on the Muffs and our upcoming new album. All the best to everyone." Concert Review: The Pixies Re-Form, Return With a Vengeance In July, the veteran punk band announced the addition of Shattuck (The Muffs, The Pandoras) to the lineup as a bassist and backing vocalist prior to beginning a world tour. The Pixies are back and all is well with the world; but this time it’s not just for an incredible, worldwide, sold out tour. Now they’ve got a brand new four song Ep and new videos to go along with their reformatted line-up. 'Indie Cindy' is the latest video from the rock band that helped spawn and inspire much of the early 90s alt/grunge craze. It's directed by Lamar + Nik; the Oklahoman duo has been on a tear lately, putting together an impressive catalogue that includes, in addition to another Pixies title, Lushlife’s breakout clip for 'Magnolia.' Presented in reverse order, Memento style, 'Indie Cindy' is a video about what happens when you get in over your head. It's told with such a strong narrative structure, you could almost consider it a short film. It is a testament to the band’s new approach to...

Kim Deal, the bassist for The Pixies, has decided to leave the band. The other three members of the alternative-rock band announced her departure on the Pixies' Facebook page Friday (June 14).
In the official message posted, there isn't too much information about why Deal left the band she joined 27 years ago. Signed by Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering, the short note reads:
"We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best."

As the Camden indie rock crowd brings out ‘next big thing’ after ‘next big thing’ and fails time after time to bring anything of any real substance, Tribes with their brand of grunge meets Britpop seem to be ‘the next big next big thing’. After the Pixies soundalike opening track ‘Whenever’ we come across the lead single, ‘We Were Children’, which sounds like ‘Where is my Mind’ covered by Suede. Just the second track into the album and we see a pattern, Britpop meets Grunge, glam meets gore, quiet meets loud. The next two tracks,...

It happened one fateful evening in New York back in 2009. Both Metallica and Lou Reed were on hand for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concerts, and after crossing paths back stage, realized they wanted to make more music together. "Lulu" is the resultant album that chance encounter yielded.
Reed asked Metallica, the exalted rulers of heavy metal, to help him provide a soundtrack to his theatrical piece of the same name. Last May, the two musical forces came together to create ten eclectic songs that sound like nothing you've heard from Metallica before.
But Metallica are no strangers to collaboration. In fact, the band -- and its members -- have teamed up with some other unlikely (and other, likely) collaborations in their past. Here's a look back at five Metallica musical pairings you may not have known about.
And don't forget to check back at 10am Est Saturday on IFC.

From an illicit Pixies gig to a Mesopotamian ziggurat, Guardian critics recall their biggest moment of inspiration in their respective fields
How to enter this year's competition
Pop: Alexis Petridis
Can any gig you see as a critic ever match the ones you saw as a teenager? Bizarrely, going to a gig when I was 17 was harder work than writing reviews has ever been. It involved not merely getting to London, but lying to my parents about where I was going, lying to my friend's parents about where my parents thought I was going, bunking off school, and then convincing somebody who looked 18 to go to the bar on my behalf.
But none of that mattered the night I saw the Pixies supported by My Bloody Valentine, in September 1988. It's not every night you see arguably the two most important guitar bands of the era on the same stage at...

Grouplove are among the more affable bands to land in recent memory. Drawn together by a series of events that frankly sounds too weird to be fabricated, the five-piece coalesces beneath punchy vocals, tight harmonies, and youthful abandon. They are an “La band” but their story begins beneath the Brooklyn Bridge. The tale is best told by the band itself:
“Maybe it starts the night Hannah (Hooper) met Christian (Zucconi) at one of his acoustic shows in New York in the summer of 2008. Their connection was instantaneous and they ended up listening to tapes under the Brooklyn Bridge until the wee hours of the morning. Hannah had just been invited to an artist’s residency in the small village of Avdou, Crete and was set to leave in a week. She was worried that if she left she would never have contact with Christian again, so she invited him…and he said yes.

Some time in the mid-90s I had friends who were all excited about some tapes they had. "You gotta hear these two guys Peter and Raymond." What I heard were two drunken men screaming at each other. One of them was noticeably gay, and injected some fine Paul Lynde-esque zingers, the most risible of which was his cri de coeur "shut up, little man!" My friends were doubled-over in laughter; I didn't get it. I dismissed it, though in time I found myself quoting lines from these tapes and, after that, wanting to know more about the two sad sacks abusing one another. (I must note, this is exactly what happened when I first saw the underground film Grey Gardens, which I've now seen dozens of times and recognize as a masterpiece.)

“Black Francis’s Golem” a Starving Art world premiere art and film event in collaboration with Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow.
Black Francis, the musical-genius frontman of highly influential alt-rock band The Pixies, has created a new score for the German Expressionist silent masterpiece Der Golem. A recording of this new film score will be spun along with the movie at the Starving Art Drive-in. Accompanying the music/film presentation, Francis’s related art work will be on display at the Starving Art Gallery.
“A silent classic and an exemplary specimen of German expressionist cinema, Der Golem is set in 16th century Prague. A rabbi fashions a proto–Frankenstein’s monster, sculpted from rough clay and brought to life through sorcery, to protect the Jewish ghetto from a Christian emperor’s decree that it be dissolved. Through means both surprising and charming, the creature manages to stave off the wrath of the emperor and his court.

Frank Black, Kim Deal and the rest of The Pixies rock in a pair of shows on “Pixies Live: Acoustic and Electric” and Zakk Wylde (don’t miss our exclusive portrait) proves his guitar-god prowess on “Black Label Society: The European Invasion Doom Troopin’”
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
The best music discs don’t just replicate the concert experience but give you a view of the band doing what they do best. Ideally, it’s not just “any show,” but one that could convert the non-believers as well as preach to the choir. Such is the case with “Acoustic and Electric” and “The European Doom Troopin’,” although the former is more effective at illustrating its artist’s ability than the latter, but we’ll get to that.

Did you miss last week's rather excellent episode of FlashForward, "The Garden of Forking Paths?" If so, read a recap here.
This week's episode begins with Janis, speaking in a voiceover over a scene of FBI agents running the six-mile obstacle course "Yellow Brick Road," describing how she joined the FBI. She never intended to join the FBI; she was a lawyer who hated her life. She wanted to do something patriotic. A friend, Demetri, got her to apply to eh Bureau, and she loved every second of it. She was not doing something that mattered. It is revealed that Janis is speaking two years before the blackout, to a woman named Leda, a headhunter. Janis tells her that she's not looking to quit the FBI, which she just joined. Leda tells her that she has an opportunity for Janis, and doesn't want her to quit. Rather, Leda's offer would be more like multitasking.

He has been known as Frank Black and Black Francis, but when he was born on this day 45 years ago, the frontman of the Pixies was called Charles Thompson IV. No matter what you call him, he has plenty to celebrate on his birthday, as Black Francis helped invent alternative rock and was part of an incredible group who didn't need to go to the mainstream because the mainstream came to them.
Francis grew up shuttling back and forth between Boston (where he was born) and Los Angeles. He eventually settled in Boston and started a band with Joey Santiago, a friend he met while in college at the University of Massachusetts. They recruited bassist Kim Deal and drummer David Lovering, and the Pixies were born. This Friday, Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning will hit the big screen as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie in a dramatized telling of classic girl-rock band, The Runaways. I haven't had the opportunity to see it yet, but I hear that's it pretty good, and mostly Fanning's show.
