Sex & Nudity

Violence & Gore

  • In the opening scene, many scenes of surgery are seen, i.e. cutting with scalpels and poking into the wound.
  • In one dream sequence, an older man is shown cutting words into a dead man's body, whilst a young boy watches, with many closeups. He then, in a closeup, pulls up the corpses eyelids with tweezers, and then cuts off the eyelids with a pair of scissors; although the eyelids do not bleed, this scene could be very disturbing.
  • A boy is found in the corner of a room with bloody hands. The walls are covered in bloody hand and claw marks.
  • A young boy is seen running throughout the house. He climbs into the dumbwaiter looking for an escape, but then somehow gets locked into the incinerator and burned alive. His burnt body is repeatedly seen in the movie.
  • A boy wakes up to find many bloody cuts on his body in the form of words.
  • There is a scene where a boy tears up the walls of the house, many dead bodies fall out of the walls.
  • In another, a boy see's a hallucination of a woman mopping his floor with blood.

Profanity

  • 1 use of shit, Jesus and god
  • One s-word and a smattering of milder profanities ("d--n," "h---").
  • Characters use both God's and Jesus' names inappropriately.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Peter, Matt's alcoholic dad, stays on the wagon during the first part of the film.
  • But as Matt slowly falls into either madness or possession, Peter takes his own descent into darkness, drinking more and more. He drives drunk. And he flies into a lightbulb-smashing rage while drunk.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • There are several parts that make you jump, due to reflections in mirrors or unexpected appearances.
  • On several occasions, a burnt young boy is shown around the house, usually by the family members- some may find it extremely disturbing. The boy is also shown being burned alive, we hear him screaming, which might be even more disturbing than the actual image of the burnt boy.
  • An older boy spins his younger brother on a table used in the morgue. The younger brother screams repeatedly asking the boy to stop. The older brother doesn't stop because while spinning his brother, he is having visions of the events that occurred in that house. May be frightening to some viewers.
  • The father of the family comes home drunk and starts turning off lights and acts aggressive to his family which could be upsetting to people who have experienced this.
