Pixar's Up has beaten Saw VI to retain its place at the UK box office summit. The 3D animation's £3.8 million take overpowers Saw's £1.7 million to secure it the top spot for the third week running. The opening is the UK's lowest for the Saw series, which peaked with £2.5 million for Saw III in 2006. Fantastic Mr Fox is a new entry at number three with £1.5 million, while Cirque du Freak debuts in fifth place. Last week's runner-up Couples Retreat slips to four after crossing the £900,000 mark. Saw VI 2009 91 minutes Rated R With Saw VI, we see the surprising sight of a long-running franchise trying to dig itself out of its own grave. Clearly intended to either be the final Saw film or at least a finale to the second three-film arc, the picture goes out of its way to tie up loose ends, retroactively explain awkward story points, and sweep away dead weight. By once again returning the focus to its core dilemma ('how much blood would you shed to save yourself or others?') and its key character (John Kramer once again takes center stage), this sixth chapter inexplicably works as a solid horror film and a skewed morality tale. Most tellingly, Saw VI is actually almost good enough to make you glad that the series didn't end after Saw III. There will be no plot... »

Updated Monday 10Am: As of this morning's estimates, Paranormal Activity took the weekend with an impressive 22M on less than 2,000 screens. Saw VI's estimated take is 14.8M, good enough for second place but the weakest opening ever for a Saw sequel. Early box office estimates are in and according to Deadline Hollywood, Paranormal Activity scored an estimated 7.5M on Friday despite being in about 1,100 less theaters than Saw VI, which took in an estimated 6.9M. Weekend totals for Paranormal Activity are estimated to be 21M when all is said and done, while Saw VI (arguably the best entry in the series since Saw III) will likely come away with a modest 18M for the weekend. We'll have actual... »

Friday’s box office results spelled trouble for the once mighty “Saw” franchise in the form of Paramount’s upstart horror pick-up “Paranormal Activity”. Luckily for film fans, Saturday’s attendance rates could offer no quarter to the fearsome Jigsaw killer who finished outside of first place for the first time since the original “Saw” debuted back in 2004. Playing in about 1,000 fewer venues, “Paranormal” didn’t just manage to keep its lead throughout the three day frame, its solid performance also kept those “Saw VI” numbers down to about half of what the film’s predecessors averaged from 2005 to 2008.
Title Weekend Total 1 Paranormal Activity $22,000,000 $62,400,000 2 Saw 6 $14,800,000 $14,800,000 3 Where the Wild Things Are $14,420,000 $53,960,000 4 Law Abiding Citizen $12,713,000 $40,317,000 5 Couples Retreat $11,097,000 $78,213,000 6 Astro Boy $7,017,000 $7,017,000 7 The Stepfather $6,500,000 $20,312,000 8 Vampire’s Assistant $6,347,000 $6,347,000 9 Cloudy w/Meatballs $5,600,000 $115,200,000 10 Zombieland $4,300,000 $67,300,000

Saw III, IV, and V director David Hackl is in pre-production for Saw VII, but right now Saw VIII is resting in the planning stage with no director. Tobin Bell, Jigsaw himself, says that he may take the director's chair if it is offered.
They asked me about that, I don't know quite how sincerely. I told them it was way too much work. Directors are there forever. Actors, they come in, they do their scene, but directors.... Then when they get a break, that's the time for everybody to descend on them and say, "Oh, I'm glad you're free for a moment because we've got a major problem in costume." I appreciate my down time. I'm being a little tongue in cheek about that. The truth is that I really do want to direct one of these sometime. I'm just waiting for them to come to me again. I »

The end of October. This means changes in weather, the end of baseball, lots of parties with women dressed up in "sexy" versions of everything from Strawberry Shortcake to nuns, and another Saw movie to be unleashed upon the multiplexes.
You know, I gotta hand it to the filmmakers. They've crafted a wholly original new series of cheap thrillers that don't require much money, and have led it to the greatest grossing horror series of all time!
On top of which, we're six movies in, and they haven't resorted to 3-D releases, a prequel set in the old west, or Jigsaw in space yet, which means there must still be plenty of needlessly complex methods of killing people with common household rusted objects. Although I hear the next one will probably be in 3-D, so Saw VIII will probably take place aboard the Nsa Jigsaw
Anyway, with the release of »

Rube Goldberg machines are awesome. There's nothing quite like watching an absurd, elaborate series of actions and reactions. It's tricky stuff, making sure disparate mechanical parts that weren't designed specifically to work together operate in concert. Can you imagine what it's like setting up one that could hurt you? Hell, what about one that's intentionally designed to kill somebody, like the ones deranged killer Jigsaw sets up in the "Saw" movies?
Imagine the hours upon hours it takes to set up those elaborate deathtraps. How many tetanus shots he must need after sticking himself with rusty power tools. How many vaccinations he must require from handling all those used syringes. Hell, how many times the poor bastard has stubbed his toe after dropping that damn puppet. He's bound to have set up some traps that plain don't work, schemes that looked great on paper but just didn't prove up to »

Welcome to HorrorFest 2009. Oh, my. I had no idea how much work it was going to be to step back in and review the newest film in the long-running "Saw" series. I didn't intentionally sit the series out, but I also didn't make any big effort to catch up with them at any point, either. The last "Saw" film that I know for sure I saw was the second one. I think maybe I saw "Saw III" at some point, but I couldn't swear to it in court. I definitely didn't see the fourth or fifth one. I just felt like I got the point already, and I didn't find the... »

Every Halloween for the past four years, a new Saw sequel has opened—and the film series’ high mortality rate necessitates the casting of a group of new faces each time. Many an up-and-coming actor has shrieked and suffered his or her way through a role as one of Jigsaw’s victims—but one of the ensemble in Saw VI, opening this Friday from Lionsgate, had special preparation. Tanedra Howard, who plays Simone in the latest entry, won her part via VH1’s Scream Queens reality/competition show last year.
At the time she tried out for the series, however, she had no idea what screen vehicle might await her at the other end. “We were all, ‘What movie is this gonna be for?’ ” Howard recalls. “We didn’t know if it was gonna be a straight-to-dvd, so it could have been good or it could have been kind of embarrassing. »

Suspecting they would have large significance in later sequels, I yesterday refrained from commenting on Saw III's plethora of useless shots. The camera's fixation on Agent Hoffman (Costas Mandylor), barely above a bit player in part three. Amanda reading a letter. Jigsaw pouring candle wax on a tape. All of these are meant to clue us in to later events in the series, but taking Saw III as a standalone movie (a test that, I believe, all movie sequels have a responsibility to meet), these moments were just dead weight that contributed to an already slow, putrid movie. »

They're not allowed to publicly speak about what went wrong with Saw V , which was critically torn asunder, even by the most devout fans of the series, like it was a victim of Jigsaw's many traps, but writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton will gladly talk to you about how Saw VI is an improvement. This latest entry, directed by series editor Kevin Greutert (making his directorial debut) and coming to theaters October 23, is the third Saw film penned by the duo, also behind this summer's The Collector and the Feast trilogy. They've had the unenviable task of picking up a storyline which found its principle antagonist, Jigsaw (aka John Kramer) dead. For Saw IV they deftly met that challenge head-on by telling a story than ran parallel to Saw III . In Saw V ,... »

Sunrise, sunset. Days bleed into days, weeks into weeks and years into years. And as the world turns and nature casts an indifferent eye to our petty mortal foibles, stresses and concerns, a legion of dedicated men and women know that outside of death and taxes, there is but one constant in their lives, one definite that will call to them and embrace them every year, without fail. It will lead them to a place that, though strewn with all manner of glistening viscera and roughly removed limbs, is a sort of home away from home.
And when that phone rings, they know what the disembodied voice on the other end will say to them from the corporate ether:
“Get ready…we’re doing another Saw.”
Since James Wan and Leigh Whannell unleashed their original horror/torture/morality tale in 2004, the neverending Saw franchise has become a predictable presence. Relocating »

Is Saw VI going to play like a "greatest hits" album? It's beginning to look that way judging by the crop of photos hitting the web this last week (like this nod to Saw III ). Now we've got the image you see below - by way of the official Saw site and it looks like we're seeing Amanda (Shawnee Smith) in the head trap. Then again, this poster reveals a new head trap is on the way. Our guess? It's not Amanda but just another victim altogether. Sound off with your own theories in the comments board below. Saw VI opens in theaters October 23. Click below for a hi-res version! »

Bloody Disgusting learned today that J. Larose will be joining Deborah Ann Woll, Briana Evigan, Alexa Vega, Shawn Ashmore, Matt O'Leary, Lyriq Bent, Lisa Marcos, Patrick Flueger and Aj Cook in Darren Lynn Bousman's Mother's Day. This will be the fifth time Larose has been in one of Bousman's projects as he starred in Repo! The Genetic Opera, Saw III, Saw IV and the "Fear Itself" episode New Year's Day. Filming begins today. In the remake written by Scott Milam, three brothers on the run from the law head for home, only to discover that their mother lost the house in a foreclosure. Debbie Rochon, often described as a scream queen herself, wrote in an article originally published in Gc Magazine that "a true Scream Queen isn't The Perfect Woman. She's sexy, seductive, but most importantly 'attainable' to the average guy. Or so it would seem." Nastassja Kinski Films: To the Devil a Daughter (1976) [1] Cat People (1982) [2] The Day the World Ended (2001) [3] Inland Empire (2006) [4] Kinski will always be remembered for the iconic photograph shot by Richard Avedon (with a snake coiled around her body) and her role in Paul Schrader's (not so good) remake of Cat People. Needless to say, it was a hit at the box office and Kinski deservingly received a Saturn Award for Best Actress. Caroline Munro Films: The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) [5] Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972) [6] Dracula A.D. 1972 [7] Maniac (1980) [8] Faceless (1987) [9] Demons 6 (1989) [10] Caroline Munro seduced audiences in her Hammer roles in films like Dracula A.D. 1972, but for gore hounds, »

Labor Day weekend is coming up, and it's a holiday that marks the end of the summer movie season along with summer itself. All the kids are heading back to the classroom for another dreaded year of school and (for those in L.A. like myself) the weather starts to cool... hopefully. While fall usually isn't seen as a cinematic hotbed, with the blockbuster summer season over, there are still plenty of quality films to check out at the box office. This year we have Megan Fox's possessed body, a sensational animated film and a new zombie adventure. There's a lot more that I'm looking forward to this fall, so here is a comphrehensive look at what you can expect from this fall movie season.
Starring: Gerard Butler, Kyra Sedgwick, Michael C. Hall, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, John Leguizamo, Amber Valletta, Terry Crews, Logan Lerman, »
