Remake of Raimi's Early '80s Cult Classic to Top Domestic Box Office This Weekend

6 April 2013 3:33 AM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Remake of Raimi's early '80s cult classic (and minor box-office performer) to easily surpass Jurassic Park 3D rerelease to land at the top of the domestic chart This past weekend, the no. 1 release at the Us/Canada -- actually, around the world -- box office was the widely panned 3D-converted sequel of a widely panned flick based on a toy. This weekend (April 6-8), in addition to the 3D toy-movie sequel mentioned above, two of the other top four movies on the domestic b.o. chart will be the remake of a bloody cult classic and the 3D-converted relaunch of a 1993 horror blockbuster. As the old saying goes, moviegoers are eager, thirsty, yearning for fresh, original content. That surely helps to explain why the brought-back-to-life Evil Dead will be this early April weekend's top film, likely to be followed by (toy movie sequel) G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the animated The Croods, »

you can’t stop the music... *ever* (A Late Quartet review)

4 April 2013 5:12 PM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

You can’t stop, even if you screw up, even if -- when -- your instrument goes out of tune. There’s the long and complex piece of his music that Beethoven instructs you play like that, but it applies to life, too. If A Late Quartet lays on the metaphor a little too thickly, all is preforgiven, even before you realize that’s what’s happening, by the sheer joy of getting to watch Christopher Walken (Seven Psychopaths), Catherine Keener (The Croods), and Philip Seymour Hoffman (Moneyball) rattle around one another, pissing everybody off and trying to keep things together even when it seems like everything between them is irrevocably broken. They’re members of a renowned New York City string quartet, also including leader Mark Ivanir (Big Miracle), that is forced down from the high of their 25th anniversary together by the news that Walken’s cellist is retiring -- has to retire, »

Tim Burton to direct Big Eyes from Ed Wood screenwriters

3 April 2013 10:27 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

After reaching the dizzying heights of the magical $1 billion mark with 2010's Alice in Wonderland, Tim Burton came back down to Earth with a bump last year as both Dark Shadows and Frankenweenie struggled to light up the box office, and the less said about the Burton-produced Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter the better.

However, the filmmaker seems to be wasting little time in picking himself up for his next directorial offering, with Deadline reporting that Burton has signed on helm the long-in-development Big Eyes from Ed Wood screenwriters Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander, whose other credits include The People vs. Larry Flynt, Man on the Moon and the upcoming Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters and Monopoly.

Big Eyes tells the story of Walter and Margaret Keane, who enjoyed huge success in the 1950s and 60s selling Margaret's artwork (featuring unusually large-eyed children) under her husband's name, until they divorced and »

The Croods thumps GI Joe and tops UK Easter box office

3 April 2013 8:33 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

DreamWorks Animation's caveman adventure The Croods enjoys a second week at the top of the box-office chart

The winner

Dipping only 7% from the previous weekend, caveman cartoon The Croods cruised to a second week at the top of the box-office chart, delivering a 12-day total of £10.61m.

Considering DreamWorks Animation's previous effort, Rise of the Guardians, has managed only £12.67m after 18 weeks on release and The Croods has the bulk of the Easter school holiday ahead of it, the new picture is clearly going to achieve a much higher total. Executives at the studio had reason to hope that Guardians was a safe bet, since characters such as Jack Frost, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy provided ample brand recognition, but it turns out audiences have proved much more welcoming to the freshly conceived, albeit familiar-feeling, family at the heart of The Croods.

Nicolas Cage: 'The Croods is a totally modern caveman adventure'

1 April 2013 7:55 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Nicolas Cage has jokingly referred to his new film The Croods as a thoroughly "modern" prehistoric adventure movie.

Cage and Emma Stone lend their voices to The Croods as members of a caveman family who adventure out of their home with a risk-taking guide (Ryan Reynolds).

In an interview with Flicks and Bits, the actor said the conflicts within the prehistoric family are extremely relatable for today's audiences.

"I think they're a completely modern family, clothed to be looking like Neanderthals," Cage explained. "The issues and the tensions that arise in the story of The Croods are things I think any family can relate to."

He continued: "The fact that [my character] Grug has a young daughter who's becoming a teenage young lady who wants to go exploring, maybe meet a boy, maybe fall in love… Grug is to an extent understandably over-protective. There's genuine fears and concerns with that. I think »
