Warner Bros. Buys $2 Million Star Vehicle for Steve Carell

18 December 2009 10:47 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Variety reports that Warner Bros. is betting big on Steve Carell and Cars writer Dan Fogelman.  The studio has just paid $2 million against $2.5 million for an untitled spec script by Fogelman with the intention of having Steve Carell star in it.  Oddly enough, the film doesn’t sound like an expensive movie nor does it seem like it’s the kind of movie Carell typically stars in.  According to Variety, “Script has a tone comparable to ‘Love Actually.’ Carell will play a father whose life unravels while he deals with a marital crisis and tries to manage his relationship with his children.”  I guess WB really, really like Dan in Real Life.

Fogelman wrote the script specifically with Carell in mind but there’s only a 50-50 shot Carell will do the film during his hiatus from The Office.  The other film is one we reported on a couple days »

Warners Tempts Carell With New Comedy

17 December 2009 10:11 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

As seems to be the norm these days, Steve Carell is in heavy demand. Just yesterday we reported on the Mail Order Groom comedy he's pondering as a likely reunion with Date Night's Tina Fey (and that film is still awaiting release). And now Warners - with whom he has a development deal anyway - is trying to woo him with a comedy pitch.Given that his moviemaking time is limited thanks to his commitments to The Office, he's a picky man, so the studio has splashed out $2 million to buy an untitled spec written by Cars scribe Dan Fogelman. There aren't that many details about the possible pic, but according to Variety, it's a Love Actually-style blend of the bitter and the sweet about a man dealing with a marital crisis and attempting to restore his relationship with his kids.Fogelman apparently wrote the thing with Carell »

Fox Searchlight Finds a Number One Fan in Witherspoon

12 December 2009 6:25 PM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

Seltzer (who hasn't seen a produced screenplay since One Fine Day) sold Rule #1 to Fox Searchlight - the company who is currently seeing red with the horribly conceived Amelia. - Reese Witherspoon, the most commonly used named whenever a film needs to attach a lead actress to a project (Kidman used to own the title) is being linked for her acting abilities and producing capabilities to Terrel Seltzer's original screenplay. If Reese's publicist reads this, please drop me a line and let me know which title on this long grocery list is she no longer "attached" to. Seltzer (who hasn't seen a produced screenplay since One Fine Day) sold Rule #1 to Fox Searchlight - the company who is currently seeing red with the horribly conceived Amelia. Brad Epstein (Dan in Real LIfe) will produce the pic which centers on a New Yorker who befriends a Puerto Rican girl with attention deficit disorder. »

A – Z Movie Reviews – D’s

7 December 2009 11:42 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

To continue my review of my epic journey to watch all my films from A-z, this is the Forth part.

For those that don’t know I am watching all 700+ Dvd/Bluray films from A-z which has so far taken me 2.5 years to get to the end of H’s!

I thought I should retrospectively review each letter and give my top 5 films from each alpha block and maybe bring your attention to some films you may not have seen, films you’ve not seen in ages or films you should give another try. Click A, B, and C to read previous parts.

And so we reach the D’s and looking into the history of D’s I found some hideous movies I’m glad to say I don’t own like the Dr Doolittle remakes, Dude where’s my car, Deuce Bigalow male gigolo (2 parts, how!!), D3 Mighty Ducks, »

Tina Fey and Steve Carell's 'Date Night' trailer has more gunshots, car crashes than expected

12 November 2009 8:08 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

When we started hearing about the new Steve Carell-Tina Fey comedy Date Night earlier this year, I kind of pictured a witty, domestic comedy of errors. Articles described the movie as a romcom about a couple whose night out goes laughably awry, so I immediately pictured something like a mix of Baby Mama and Dan in Real Life, with maybe a dash of Adventures in Babysitting from the parents Pov. Boy, was I wrong. Judging by the movie's just-leaked trailer, Date Night (coming in April) is as much an action pic as a comedy — like an earth-bound Mom and Dad Save the World, »

Bromance Blossoms Again with Summit's 'We Love You'

15 October 2009 1:32 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

The term "bromance" has become a popular buzz word for male-buddy-driven comedies such as Humpday and I Love You, Man that have focused on the close-knit heterosexual relationships of two male friends. Honestly, I hate word fusion like this, including the trendy showbiz abbreviations that are common in the Hollywood trades (Rom-com? Are you too busy for two words?). THR has announced another "bromantic comedy" to toss into the mix with Summit Pictures' Alan Yang scripted comedy We Love You, the story of two close friends who discover they're dating the same woman and the hilarity that ensues after that. Yang is no stranger to comedy having written several episodes of Comedy Central's "South Park" and NBC's "Parks & Rec," as well as a re-write for director David Dobkin's upcoming film Boss Go Home. Producer Jon Shestack (Air Force One, Dan in Real Life) will produce the project for »

Q&A: Juliette Binoche on Paris, Memory, and her First Kiss.

17 September 2009 9:00 PM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

It's impossible to have a mundane conversation with Juliette Binoche. I tried. No matter how pedestrian my questions were, the actress would think for a few seconds before responding with something weighty and pensive, if not entirely comprehensible—they say French women don't get fat, but Binoche doesn't even chew it. It's that same hint of deeper thoughts that loads her half-smiles with significance and makes her roles so rich, from her Oscar-winning turn in The English Patient to, well, Dan in Real Life with Steve Carell. Now, at 45, after acting in forty films, she's pursuing new passions, including painting, poetry, and dance—in fact, she's currently performing a limited dance engagement at Bam, in Brooklyn. When I met her, though, it was back in France (well, the French Consulate, which is technically still French soil) and we talked about movies, specifically about her latest movie, Paris. The film is an ensemble drama, »

Music: Review:Sondre Lerche: Heartbeat Radio

7 September 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

When you’re 24 and your discography already contains both a smooth-jazz record and the soundtrack to Dan In Real Life, it’s going to be hard to earn back the trust of discerning music fans. On Heartbeat Radio, Sondre Lerche’s redemption strategy is not just to return to form, but to go completely overboard in the process. Orchestration once made Lerche’s feather-light songs even lighter, but this record is straight-up chamber-pop—Sean O’Hagan of The High Llamas even shows up to arrange horns and strings. Radio sprinkles in everything from trombone to banjo, and the increased »

Steven Spielberg sees an invisible 6 1/2-foot-tall rabbit named Harvey

9 August 2009 2:16 PM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Super-Hollywood master Steven Spielberg has been hopping around with many ideas for a prospective next movie, one of them being Lincoln, which is to have Liam Neeson star as the famous American president. Another idea in the oven is his version of the graphic novel Oldboy, which has already been made into a film by Park Chan-Wook.

But Spielberg has chosen something no one really saw coming for his next project. Starting early next year, he will begin filming on Harvey, a remake of the famous Pulitzer-Prize winning play and film that originally starred Jimmy Stewart. (For those who haven’t seen either, the story is about a man named Elwood P. Dowd who has an unusual relationship with Harvey, a 6 1/2-foot-tall rabbit that only he can see).

Apparently, Spielberg had been antsy to get behind the camera (his latest project, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, »

Disney Gets Green

11 June 2009 6:05 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Even though it would not be orthodox for something big name to go ‘green’, this is not the kind of green were normally talking about. This particular green is Disney’s latest creation, The Odd Life of Timothy Green. Spawning from an idea from actor and producer Ahmet Zappa, Disney nabbed themselves someone to take part of the ‘modernized fable’.

Director and writer Peter Hedges (Dan In Real Life) will pen and obviously direct the new feature. Zappa will produce alongside Scott Sanders. Disney is keeping the plot under wraps for the time being, but once this puppy gets rolling there will be a big flood of updates heading our way. »

Dan In Real Life Director Goes Green

10 June 2009 11:54 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Peter Hedges, director of Dan In Real Life and Pieces of April, has lined up a "modern-day fable" at Disney called The Odd Life Of Timothy Green. Not, we assume, to be confused with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, the film is apparently "personal" to Ahmed Zappa, who came up with the idea, but we can't say much more than that since the plot is under more wraps than a pashmina warehouse.Hedges will write and direct the film - no surprise, since he got his start as a screenwriter on films including About A Boy and What's Eating Gilbert Grape? More on this as and when we get a chance to tunnel into the Disney plot vault and steal the details. »
