Great Show!

Heya! This is my first post! Yay! I really enjoyed the series, and it was written really well. Its nice to have a number of different stories to follow, without being really confused! And the characters are portrayed fabulously! The guy who plays Russel is a brilliant actor, and the way he has shown Russels struggle with his religion and sexuality are great! Also its nice to see Rik Mayall back, he is also a great actor, and has tackled Georges chaotic and sometimes upsetting life in a really good way. I just hope there is gonna be another series of this show, and that it is a good as the first! Also can't wait till Thursday's, as I wanna see how the series is ended, and how all the stories are ended! If you know, please tell me!

Excellent showcase for Rik Mayal (and others)

Goodness me, only two reviews for this awesome slice of British family life. Where's the justice?

Anyway, this six-part comedy drama is a well assembled 'feel good' story about several generations of the Kinsay family as seen through the eyes of good-natured and well-meaning George. (Rik Mayal.) The series opens and closes with a group family photo and what happens in-between both shots is a beautiful adventure of Britsh family life.

You know it's not to be taken too seriously when the local council election has Norman Stanley Fletcher as a candidate!

There's a lot of top-flight British acting talent on display, too. Francis Matthews plays an elderly love interest for the murdering granny. He was in the excellent Paul Temple (1970ish) and was the voice of Captain Scarlet. Nice extended cameos by Roy Hudd and David Mitchell. Lots of other recognizable names, to boot.

But what elevates this from just good to simply awesome is the beautiful and underplayed performance of Rik Mayal. Just a joy to watch.

the best family dram since home improvement and my family

Warning: Spoilers
MAJOR SPOILORS LIE AHEAD!!!!!!!! MAJOR SPOILORS LIE AHEAD!!!!!!!!

This series has been excellent in capturing everything a family may go through be it drugs, sex, parents remarrying, sexual awakening and old romances rekindled. I have particularly enjoyed the twist in that after all Amy's taunting and the lengths he's gone out to impress Katy Russell discovers that the feelings he has towards the young vicar are not just respect but physical attraction, meaning he's either gay or bi. But from how the bedroom scene went with Katy it appears he is defiantly gay. The way they showed this in that one episode is brilliant, as you don't just wake up one morning and think "well I m attracted to Dave I m gay", you don't realise your gay until you understand your feelings for that someone. We see at the beginning of this episode that Russell wanted to see the vicar at the service but my mum thought this was just because he wanted to be a vicar. But as soon as we realise that he can't "perform" with Katy, and the look on his face when the vicar is within kissing distance she couldn't argue. Rory Jennings has brilliantly acted this and whether he is gay or straight he will defiantly cause some hearts to flutter. I just hope his mates don't take the Mike, especially with how the finale is portrayed in the preview. Russell seems to notice guys appeal to him and according to TV guides he tries to commit suicide, which I hope he doesn't as much as I hope they do another series. Needless to say Russell's one of my favourite characters but my hat also comes of to Edna Doré who plays the Gran lily to perfection as a mischievous, rebellious adorable elderly woman who is both wise beyond her years and just as childish when she wants something. I particularly loved her storyline with her marriage to her boyfriend and the son's disapproval as he thinks she's forgetting his dad. I m not belittling the other actors and actresses pr the other story lines but these were my favourite characters because I know people like them.

And that is what makes the programme as enjoyable as home improvement and my family as it is about family problems that can occur and the families are believable. Fingers crossed for a happy ending for series 1 and for a series 2 to be filmed.
