(1987 TV Special)

John Madden: Self - Color Commentator

Quotes

  • John Madden : Most quarterbacks have trouble going to their left and throwing, but going to your left and throwing back all the way across the field? That's not an arm, that's a gun. You ought to have a permit to carry that thing.

  • Pat Summerall : Incomplete to Mobley, who hits the goal post. I'm not sure who's bigger.

John Madden : The goal post is still shaking. Look at those poles are still shaking.

    Pat Summerall : Yeah.

John Madden : That post doesn't stop and now Karlis - Karlis has to kick into the shaky post.

  • John Madden : They talk about the Elway cross. He throws the ball so hard that he implants the cross of the nose of the football right in your chest.

  • John Madden : It's tough when you're wearing blue gloves and you're blocking a guy with a white jersey. Your hand on him is very easy to see.

  • John Madden : You're not gonna run outside against this Giants defense. Watch Carl Banks, 58, coming from the outside. I think that towards the end of the season, he's become one of the best players in the whole league. You can't run at him. You say you wanna run away from Lawrence Taylor, that's good, but you have to run into him.

  • John Madden : Bavaro gets bumped and goes in here. McConkey follows him like he's his little brother.

  • Pat Summerall : Phil Simms has been named the game's most valuable player. And Simms gets the bucket.

John Madden : Simms got the first bucket. You know there was a player bucket to be decided later. Simms got it. Now we still got two more buckets. I think - you know, one's the Bill Parcells bucket. And I think the other one is going to be another coach's bucket. Look who goes and gets it, two offensive linemen, Bart Oates, Brad Benson.

    Pat Summerall : Simms again.

    [laughs]

John Madden : He's the MVP.

  • John Madden : There's Simms after the touchdown. It looks - he wanted to celebrate with one of his guys, and he ended up celebrating with Dennis Smith.

  • Pat Summerall : [after McConkey's touchdown]  Yeah, he's keeping this ball.

John Madden : Not gonna fumble it either. Look how he's protecting it. You don't know what kind of hits you're gonna get in celebration. Look, he has both arms wrapped around it.

  • John Madden : Whatever they did in those locker rooms at halftime, the Giants did it the right way, and the Broncos had a little trouble with it.

  • Pat Summerall : There's Rutledge.

John Madden : The quarterback can't play when he gets the bucket.

Pat Summerall : Plus you're cold.

John Madden : Rutledge says, what a way to get in a Super Bowl. Starting quarterback gets the bucket and I gotta go play.

  • Pat Summerall : Carson has changed shirts and he's in a security uniform now. That's the yellow jacket the security people... And here it comes.

[Parcell gets the bucket dumped on him]

John Madden : Well, there's two kinds. There's plain water and there's the sticky stuff. And when it has color in it, it's sticky. I tell ya, Bill Parcells loves this one.

  • Pat Summerall : He got another one. They washed out the sticky stuff.

John Madden : The Super Bowl is worth a double bucket. It really is.

  • Pat Summerall : How does he feel, John?

John Madden : I'll tell ya, he feels great. This is - this is as good as it gets. Doesn't get any better than this. And the great thing about it, it lasts forever. It's not something that's not there tomorrow.
