13.5 Advanced Thanatology
Advanced Thanatology starts off on a light note, with Sam doing things to make Dean happy. After all the troubles Dean has been through, Sam tries to make things easier on his big brother, which leads to some overindulgence and a hangover-fueled continental breakfast. There's all these amusing little moments between them that can get lost if you're not paying attention. One such moment is when Sam is talking to Dean outside the hotel, and Dean walks away and impatiently waves his arms in front of a not-automatic door. Might seem trivial, but that gesture says a lot more about what Dean is feeling than by what he tells his brother.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
10 Cloverfield Lane (Dan Trachtenberg)
Forget the Cloverfield connection. The actors who were in this film didn’t even know what the title was until moments before the first trailer dropped. Producer J.J. Abrams used that branding as part of the wrapping for its promotional mystery box, but the movie stands perfectly alone from 2008’s found-footage monster picture. Hell, 10 Cloverfield Lane perhaps doesn’t even take place within the same...

Zac Efron overcame his substance abuse struggles by picking up the hobbies he had previously shunned over fears he would be followed.
The actor rose to prominence on Disney franchise High School Musical, but behind the fame and fortune, he struggled to deal with the constant media intrusion and always attracting a crowd whenever he stepped out in public.
He turned to cocaine and alcohol to help him escape his troubles, and ended up undergoing two stints in rehab in 2013.
Now clean and sober, Zac admits he had to make huge changes in his lifestyle to stay on the straight and narrow.
"What I found is structure," he explained to Elle magazine. "That led me to a balance of opposites. You get out of life what you put in."
Describing his previous daily routine, he said, "There was a moment when my morning routine was, like, get up and Google yourself.

Zac Efron may be known for being a total heartthrob, but he also has a really big soft side. During an interview with Elle magazine for its June issue, the Neighbors 2 actor got incredibly real about the downside of fame and how he turned his life around after getting sober in 2013. From his struggle with addiction to how he really feels about taking his clothes off for movie roles, he covers it all. Check out the highlights below! On getting support from his parents: "My parents love me in very different ways. But they checked every box. My dad always taught me to be driven. I was always the shortest kid at school. Always the worst kid on the team. I'd come home after practice and my dad would build a basketball hoop. Then we'd go out and shoot 100 free throws. Pretty soon every time I got fouled I would make my free throws.

Donald Trump’s alleged inappropriate behavior towards women is front and center in a New York Times piece, in which the newspaper analyzes his interactions with employees, former Miss Universe contestants and his former wife, Ivana. For the article titled “Crossing the Line,” the publication interviewed “dozens of women” who have worked for the presidential candidate over the past 40 years, conducting 50 interviews over the span of six weeks. Their accounts revealed Trump’s derogatory nicknames, negative comments on appearances and inappropriate interactions between him and many women he worked with, according to the report. Friends' Matt LeBlanc will be joining Chris Evans as one of the presenters on the BBC's new-look Top Gear show...
While as a rule, Den Of Geek restricts its motoring coverage to Deloreans and Lotus Esprits-cum-submarines, we thought this addition to the BBC's new-look Top Gear presenting team would be of interest to some.
Another multi-millionaire petrolhead is joining Chris Evans to co-present Top Gear: Mr Matt LeBlanc of Friends and Episodes fame. A self-confessed "car nut", Leblanc currently holds the show's record for the fastest ever celebrity lap in its recurring 'star in a reasonably priced car' segment.
The departure of Jeremy Clarkson and the Chipmunks from the BBC's globally successful motoring show is well-publicised by now. That trio has been picked up by Amazon to make twelve episodes of a rival, big-budget motoring show.
"Additional Top Gear presenters will be confirmed shortly", says the BBC.

The Stalinist state is the unlikely source of an internationally successful rom-com
It is a "light, refreshing, fun rom-com" about "girl power", according to its British co-director, a tale of a working-class lass drawn to the stage amid the bright lights of the metropolis. Comrade Kim Goes Flying – in which a beautiful coalminer inveigles her way into becoming a circus trapeze artist – may have as familiar a story arc as Billy Elliot, but this 81-minute film was shot in North Korea, a land known for being a starving Stalinist state on the edge of the world, not for producing fluffy chick flicks.
Comrade Kim – which stars Han Jong-sim, a well-known trapeze artist who learned to act for the film – appears to have gone down a storm in North Korea itself. Han is now a celebrity who is stopped in the street for her autograph. Pyongyang's state circus is inundated with...

Chicago – FX’s “Justified” is one of the best shows on TV and its cult of popularity continues to grow with each passing season. When the fourth season premiered earlier this week, it had half a million more viewers than for the third season premiere. People keep falling in love with Raylan Givens and Boyd Crowder, two of the most fascinating characters on TV. Watch the recently released third season Blu-ray set to find out why.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
The second, Emmy-winning season of “Justified” is still the peak for the series but the third season was only a slight dip in quality. The second, Emmy-winning season of “Justified” is still the peak for the series but the third season was only a slight dip in quality. The fact is that Margo Martindale’s incredible work as one of the most fascinating villains in TV history cast a shadow over what followed and characters played by Neal McDonough and Mykelti Williamson couldn’t match her magnetism. However, the supporting cast and regular ensemble of “Justified” continued...

About two and a half years ago, Andrew Dice Clay reached rock bottom. "My career was in the fucking toilet," says the veteran comedian. "I wasn't earning enough to make my monthly nut, and I had a bunch of lawsuits against me I can't talk about." Desperate for cash, the notoriously foul-mouthed entertainer decided that his only option was to try his luck in Las Vegas. "I used to be a big gambler," he says. "I could win or lose $500,000 to $700,00 within hours."

Multi-talented actor and comedian Wayne Brady has apologized for a joke he told at the Comedy Central Roast Of Roseanne Barr, reports TMZ. The joke, a crack about the appearance of fellow roaster Jeffrey Ross, sparked outrage amongst some parents and conservative groups after the show aired on August 12.
During his set, Brady said to Ross, "...a lot of people hate you, especially Sarah Palin because you remind her of what Trig is going to look like when he’s 40."
Reports of Brady being booed for the joke were somewhat exaggerated, however, as a combination of groans, laughter and applause are not an uncommon reaction during the notoriously over-the-top shows. As the roast aired, Ross himself tweeted praise after Brady's set:
Holy mackeral@waynebrady demolished me with that trigg joke.#RoseanneRoast. Great set, buddy.

From outside, a war-torn looking warehouse located on the outskirts of Toronto hardly looks special at all. But once you step inside, you can see that BBC America has obviously gone to great lengths to recreate 1860s New York City for its period drama, "Copper." The hard cement floors have been transformed into a dirty cobblestone road. A hardware store, a tavern with a freestanding bar and the 6th Precinct Metropolitan Police Station are just a few of the buildings that crowd the street. Make a sharp right and you're into a more affluent district of large houses and mansions.
Created by Tom Fontana ("Oz," "Homicide: Life on the Street") and Will Rokos ("Southland") "Copper" follows Detective Kevin Corcoran (Tom Weston-Jones), an Irish-immigrant cop doing his best to keep the peace in the rough Five Points neighborhood while seeking answers to a case that's hit too close to home.

In terms of documentary film servings in the fall (pre Idfa in November), in the hands of Thom Powers, Tiff’s former Real to Reel section now simply known as Tiff Docs is the equivalent to riding the gravy train. Comedy is social commentary. In a totalitarian regime, what’s the first thing to go? Comedy. Because comedy is, by its nature, subversive.

Many comedians and fans alike, consider the comedy stage a sacred place, where the dark, offensive, sacrilegious and even stupid can and should remain uncensored.
But in the age of smart phones and YouTube, where something said on stage in front of a few hundred people can suddenly become national news, how do comedians continue taking the risks (and making the mistakes) that make live comedy so thrilling?
Moreover, is apologizing for your material, however dark or upsetting, the antithesis of being a comedian? Is it the comedian's job to go too far?
These are some of the ideas we're exploring in HuffPost Comedy's series, "Crossing the Line".
Through interviews with top comedians and writers, we're looking at how these bastions of free speech are necessary parts of our culture,...

I'm going to keep this pretty short and sweet because my time with ninja stealth game Shinobido 2 from Spike and Acquire is the first real outright disappointment among the Vita's library of launch titles. Repeating many of the mistakes from early PSP titles, it doesn't seem to know that it's a handheld game or how to handle some of the particular demands of its genre. Plus, the overall experience isn't helped by shoddy presentation and Ui elements from top to bottom that make Shinbido 2 inessential unless you absolutely, positively need a game with ninjas on your Vita.
The Basics

According to a recent report from McV the next Xbox console from Microsoft will not be equipped with an optical disc drive and their sources claim this information was revealed under what they consider “the strictest Nda” they have ever seen.
The report goes on to suggest that the console will utilize "some sort of interchangeable solid-state card storage, although it is not known whether this will be proprietary or a more standard format such as Sd."
On top of the rumors of an absent disc drive, McV is also claiming that the rumored 2013 release window for a next-generation Xbox console has been confirmed though this information, like that above, has not been officially commented on by Microsoft.
In response to the claims Microsoft said, "We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention. Beyond that we do not comment on rumors or speculation.

Comedy Central announced three new series starring Jeff Ross, Andy Daly and Nathan Fielder, the cable channel announced Thursday.
Ross, who is all but synonymous with the Comedy Central Roasts of such celebrities as Charlie Sheen and Donald Trump, will star in "The Burn," wherein Ross and fellow comics will riff on the week's subjects.
"My mission is clear," Ross said in an official statement. "To rip the world a new asshole one crack at a time. I can't wait to get started."
We hope that Ross continues to push the envelope on the show without network interference, as he typically does on his Roast appearances. To read more about his views on comedy's role in cultural discourse, read our interview with Ross in the inaugural post of our Crossing the Line series.

Do you want me to apologize after every joke? If it doesn't offend somebody it's probably not a joke. It's probably an observation that's not funny. It's gotta offend somebody somewhere.

When Tracy Morgan made a joke about killing his son if he talked to him "in a gay voice," it ignited a firestorm of controversy. But should it have? Morgan, an actor and comedian noted for his outrageous performance style, was doing a comedy set in front of a comedy audience. He was not speaking in public, from a pulpit or to a friend. He was on stage as "Tracy Morgan, Comedian"; the guy you should definitely "put the kids to bed" before watching.

I watch and enjoy The Big C for many reasons: the incredible acting of Laura Linney; the interesting take on cancer; the humor.
But I don't expect the show to shock me with a season finale such as "Crossing The Line," one that legitimately left me stunned, mouth agape on my sofa, taken utterly aback by a death I did not see coming.
But, wow, Rip, Paul. What an unexpected turn of tragic events. Can anyone say they thought Cathy would actually survive longer than her spouse?
Looking back, previous episodes actually did build up to this passing. Paul has been stressed about paying the bills all season. Sean has been acting a lot more like a father figure to Adam. Still, I watch a great deal of television to make my living and it takes a lot to surprise me at this point. So well done, The Big C.

What is the biggest ethical concern for documentary today? Yes, it's a Big question. But it's worth trying to answer even if it's not easy to do so. Ethics are such a big deal in documentary discourse, probably the toughest topic to wrap our heads around, or come to many conclusions about. Panels and lectures on documentary ethics can be found at nearly every film festival and conference, and sometimes they occur at more random times and places, too. And none of these discussions ever finish with definite resolutions.
Last week I attended one of these irregular events, one hosted by The New York Film/Video Council and titled "Crossing the Line? A conversation on ethics and documentary film." P.O.V.'s Yance Ford moderated the talk, which featured filmmakers Albert Maysles ('Grey Gardens'), Tia Lessin ('Trouble the Water'), Stephanie Wang-Breal ('I Love You,...

"I'm very fond of London and England in general. I'm dating an English boy. I have a lot of fondness of anything British," she explained. "I was incredibly happy just eating a big bowl of baked beans earlier - I was like licking the bowl. It's kinda sad though when I'm here and Russell's not."
"I love the frankness of the people, I love the tradition. I love the general ambiance. When I get married I think I'm going to get my Britishness on me. I'll be like 'I love the Queen, I know all about tea.' "

Next week in Pyongyang, James Joseph Dresnok, a U.S. Army soldier who in 1962 fled into North Korea, will see and critique Crossing the Line, British director Daniel Gordon's documentary of his life in the world's newest nuclear state, the docu's executive producer said at the AFM.
"Dresnok's health is good. He will see the film next week and send a letter out to let the filmmakers and the world know his thoughts on the film," said producer Paul Yi, who sold the film this week for six figures to France's Pretty Pictures at the American Film Market.
Word of the Crossing screening for Dresnok came from British co-producer Nicholas Bonner, who spoke to Yi over the telephone when he emerged from his latest trip into the isolated stronghold of dictator Kim Jong-il. Kim last month oversaw communist North Korea's first nuclear test, putting the rest of the world on high alert.
Dresnok, a Virginia-born orphan who for years starred as an American villain in Pyongyang propaganda films, has long suffered from a heart condition due to heavy drinking and smoking in his chosen home, an isolated and poverty-stricken capital cut off from the rest of the world.
"When we finished shooting the film, Dresnok was in the hospital and we weren't sure if he was going to make it out. Now we know he's alive," Yi said. Dresnok will likely watch Crossing on DVD with the state film crew that helped Gordon make the film, Yi said,
As with producer-director Gordon's two previous North Korea documentary films, Crossing may also have a public screening in Pyongyang or air on the state's single television channel, Yi said.
"We're not quite sure what the authorities' reaction to 'Crossing' will be," Yi said.
Crossing, which premiered at the Pusan International Film Festival in South Korea last month, will get a theatrical release in France, where Pretty also plans to distribute it in a box set with Gordon's previous North Korea documentaries The Game of Their Lives and A State of Mind. It was presold to Cinequanon in Japan and the Dongoong Arts Center in South Korea.
