#1 movie predicted correctly: 7 Weeks in a Row
1. Avatar
I'm finally going low on a big title. Too low? We'll know soon enough. Yes, it has 3-D and IMAX dollars rolling in, yes it's got a massive marketing budget and the power of James Cameron behind it. But it also has something big working against it too: Timing. The third weekend in December isn't the best time to be shooting for massive dollars, folks are finishing up shopping and entertaining family. King Kong opened at $50m, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King brought in $73m. National Treasure: Book of Secrets could only rustle up $45m in a similar time slot.
Is Avatar different? Will the years of waiting translate to big dollars? We'll see. Here's the even bigger question: If Avatar clears $60-80m this weekend, and then loses to Sherlock Holmes next weekend, is that good enough?

A sneak peek at Walt Disney Pictures' "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" has been made available for viewing pleasure. Making its way out via Apple, the newly released trailer features Jay Baruchel's Dave Stutler as he is up and down learning the magic tricks. Additionally, the snippet gives a look at a creature which looks like a dragon when it is chasing Dave.
Nicolas Cage's Balthazar Blake is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath. As he cannot do it alone, he recruits Dave, a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential, as his reluctant protege. Dave then has to get through an uneasy way to learn the art and science behind the sorcerer's magic.
Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" is directed by Jon Turteltaub, the man behind 2004 "National Treasure" and its 2007 sequel, "National Treasure: Book of Secrets

The Sorcerer’S Apprentice Trailer - Updated

The first trailer for Walt Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice has been released. This is the Jon Turteltaub directed (National Treasure, National Treasure: Book of Secrets) adventure/comedy starring Nicolas Cage, Jay Baruchel, Alfred Molina, Teresa Palmer, and Monica Bellucci.
While I’m a big fan of producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s movies that star Nicolas Cage (The Rock, Con Air, Gone in 60 Seconds, National Treasure), the trailer makes me quite nervous. Everything from the music to the not very good CGI left me less than impressed and the film looks like it aims very young. Saying that, if I were a twelve year old and hadn’t seen a lot of movies, maybe this trailer would excite me. Judge for yourself after the jump.
Update: Disney has provided us with three images from the film. They’re below the trailer.
Here’s the synopsis:
Dave (Jay Baruchel) is just an average college student,

Sometimes to fight evil, you must enlist evil. That's exactly what happened many years ago when serial killer Ted Bundy was enlisted to help capture the Green River Killer, and with the January 12th DVD release of The Riverman that tale is finally being told.
Based on real-life events recounted in the best-selling book The Riverman: Ted Bundy and I Hunt for the Green River Killer (co-written by Robert Keppel, former chief criminal investigator for the attorney general of Washington state), The Riverman recounts Keppel’s efforts to track down mass murderer Gary Ridgeway, aka the Green River Killer.
With ten unsolved murders weighing on his mind, Keppel (Bruce Greenwood, Star Trek, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Déjà Vu) recruits imprisoned serial killer Ted Bundy (Cary Elwes, The Princess Bride, Saw, The Alphabet Killer, and A Christmas Carol) to help find the killer-at-large.

It's Bath time for Nicolas Cage

Nicolas Cage obliged a Bath local's request to turn on the city's Christmas lights this afternoon – surely such a momentous occasion needs to be marked somehow?
Bath used to be known for several things – its hot springs, status as a world heritage site and sweeping Royal Crescent – but none of them are worth a damn any more. Because centuries of history have just been overshadowed by something magnificent: yes, Nicolas Cage has turned on the city's Christmas lights.
Cage's turn has put the rest of the country to shame, that's for sure. London had to make do with Jim Carrey. Manchester was forced to slum it with Alexandra Burke. Bristol had to endure Peter Andre. The poor folk of Tetbury in Gloucestershire will have to watch their Christmas lights being switched on next week by someone ignominiously described by a local website as "a former Heartbeat actor", for crying out loud.

If we all pitch in, we'll have enough money to make our very own Nicolas Cage movie and save him from the trauma of having to sell his Bahamian island. But what film?
You have to feel a little bit sorry for Nicolas Cage at the moment. A few unfortunate financial mishaps have left him just as affected by the recession as many others before him. And just like those people, Cage knows there's only one way to get out of this pickle – to sell off several homes worth a total of almost $95m, as well as his private Bahamian island. We've all been there.
But if that doesn't balance things out for him, Cage can always work himself out of his mess, either by making films at a greater frequency or by forgetting about quality and agreeing to star in bad films purely for money. The obvious hitch is

Tinker Bell And The Lost Treasure – Blu-ray Review

I’ll watch essentially anything The Mouse House churns out, within reason. Most of their live-action catalogue can be done without, but at the end of the day the Disney is that childhood friend you ultimately can’t turn your back to. I’ll even suffer through some Disney Channel schlock because my old friend and I go way, way back. For this reason, and because I’m in love with Disneyland, is why I chose to sit through Tinker Bell And The Lost Treasure. Quite honestly, I’d almost say I’m glad I did as the direct-to-dvd/Blu-ray movie turned out much better than expected.
The main reason this Tinker Bell adventure isn’t terrible is due in large part to the effort that’s on display. The writing isn’t particularly sharp, but the writers have turned in something that actually expands the mythology of Tink and Pixie Hollow.

On screen, he has battled everything from hardened convicts to vast conspiracies. Now Nicolas Cage is tangling with what may prove to be his toughest foe: the IRS.
The government has placed a tax lien on his vast real estate holdings because of $6 million in unpaid back taxes dating from 2007, the year of the 45-year-old actor's box office hits Ghost Rider and National Treasure: Book of Secrets, according to court papers.
In addition, the Internal Revenue Service has yet another lien for over $350,000 in unpaid taxes dating from 2002 to 2004. The larger tax lien, which was first filed in July, comes

National treasure? More like national liability.
Just a week after word broke that Nicolas Cage has defaulted on a $2 million loan comes news that Uncle Sam is now among those bringing the hammer down on the, last we checked, rather prolific actor.
Over the summer, the IRS quietly placed a tax lien of nearly $6.26 million on Cage's New Orleans properties after the actor flat-out failed to pay income taxes in 2007 (the same year, incidentally, that he raked in some serious back-end profits from Ghost Rider and National Treasure: Book of Secrets).
As if that weren't bad enough, the IRS obtained a second lien over yet more unpaid taxes, this time for income earned between 2002 and 2004. That lien, the

New Disney Chairman Found To Replace Dick Cook

Last month the news hit that Disney Chairman, Dick Cook, stepped down after eight years, with rumors citing everything from personal decision to “disagreements” between him and Disney CEO, Bob Iger. Beyond the Johnny Depp/Pirates of the Caribbean 4 debate, speculation ensued over who would replace Cook. Two big names being thrown around were Pixar head honcho, John Lasseter, and head of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige.
So who’s been chosen as Cook’s replacement? Lasseter or Feige? Well, surprisingly neither, as The Hollywood Reporter tells us that the President of Disney Channels Worldwide, Rich Ross (damn, I was thinking of trademarking that name…), has been appointed the new Chairman of Walt Disney Studios. Ross helped to make Disney Channel an international sensation - he was named senior VP in 1996, and was promoted to the top spot in 2004. Apparently, the amazing job Ross has done crafting Disney Channel shows and

For my screenwriting class this week, I was tasked with reading Charlie Kaufman’s screenplay for Adaptation before watching the film. It was a learning experience in terms of deciphering Kaufman’s dense style, but also in remembering that Nicolas Cage can be really terrific.
But then there’s Next. And Ghost Rider. And National Treasure 2. And I’m going to guess The Sorcerer’s Apprentice will be more akin to those first 3 than, say, Raising Arizona.
And now, thanks to the resurgence of 3D technology, Cage will be taking the lead role in an action/revenge piece entitled Drive Angry. Will his acting be as flat in three dimensions? I’m on the edge of my seat.
Patrick Lussier, co-writer of My Bloody Valentine 3D, will direct the film from a script he wrote with Todd Farmer for Nu Image/Millennium Films (who are in the news quite

After a private Mediterranean cruise with 12 pals that sailed from Aug. 12 through 16 along the French Riviera, Leonardo DiCaprio got an early jump on Labor Day by going back to work Monday in Paris for his latest movie, Inception, directed by Dark Knight's Christopher Nolan and which started shooting in London last month.
Trade reports have described Inception as a contemporary sci-fi action thriller set within "the architecture of the mind." But for DiCaprio and his costars, La Vie En Rose Oscar winner Marion Cotillard and Juno Oscar nominee Ellen Page, the setting was one of the more recognizable bridges on the Seine.

You've heard about Nicolas Cage's repeat IRS problems, right? He's now been hit with a six million dollar lien from 2007

Oh, schadenfreude! I normally don't succumb to your base comedy -- especially when it comes to taxes. I got in trouble when I was 19 and dense about college scholarships -- but it's Nic Cage, so I must take pleasure in this particular misfortune... or enormous fortune as the case may be.
In 2007, Nic Cage Master Thespian won a Razzie nomination for his triple feature: Next, National Treasure: Book of Secrets and Ghost Rider. Shouldn't he have to pay us damages as well?

G.I. Joe shoots up the top spot at the box office; Jennifer Aniston goes to prison; Gunsmoke rides again; The Losers begin and Renny Harlin goes to Russia.
Box Office
G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra shot up the top spot with an estimated $56 million over the weekend. The film had a lot of bad buzz surrounding its release so this is seen as something of a coup. The $175 million price budget means that the film will need to do well abroad and sell a lot of toys before we see a sequel.
Meryl Streep shows that age isn’t a factor in her popularity as she scored her third $20 million-plus opener in three years with Julie and Julia. The film took $21.5 million over the weekend. If the film has the same legs as The Devil Wears Prada and Mama Mia then it could hit the $100 million mark.

CBS Films is developing a feature reboot of Gunsmoke, reports the Risky Biz Blog, and has hired National Treasure: Book of Secrets writer Gregory Poirier to pen the screenplay.
The action-adventure will re-imagine Marshal Matt Dillon, the hero of the classic Western, for modern audiences. The story will serve as a prequel, exploring how the characters came to be the way they were in the series, not unlike how the recent Star Trek feature was handled. It will be set in the same American West as the original but will feature a contemporary look and modern action twists.
Poirier is said to be close to completing a first draft of the script.
Gunsmoke, which holds the title of the longest-running primetime scripted drama (it had been the longest-running primetime series until The Simpsons eclipsed it this year), ran on CBS for 20 years between 1955 and 1975. The story revolved around a number of characters in Dodge City,

First there was the news that The Big Valley is going big screen. Now it's Gunsmoke getting the silver screen adaptation. Are westerns coming back and nobody told me?
Gunsmoke, the long running CBS western, the series that made a star of James Arness and was a fixture on the Tiffany network from 1955-1975, will be turned into a motion picture.
CBS Films has turned to the writer of National Treasure: Book of Secrets to craft a new incarnation of the exploits of Marshal Matt Dillon in the western town of Dodge City. The Marshal, as fans of the show or those who've seen the drama on TVLand, was ably assisted by Miss Kitty -- owner of the Long Branch Saloon -- and Doc Adams, the Dodge City doctor.Continue reading Gunsmoke getting the big screen treatment
