Happy Friday the 13th! Walk under a ladder, hang out with a black cat, and see some movies. It's a very British heavy release week; three British films are opening in town (two with Emma Thompson in them). Two films new to Austin are directed by Dogme 95 alums. You know, the minimalist film movement started by Lars von Triers and others to thumb their noses at Hollywood and big budgets, with a manifesto demanding a vow of cinematic chastity? Can you guess which film on the list is anti-Dogme?
An Education -- It's London in the 1960s, and a teenage girl encounters a playboy in this coming of age story. Directed by Lone Scherfig (Italian for Beginners, Dogme #12 ), with a slew of memorable actors, including Dollhouse's Olivia Williams, Rosamund Pike (Pride and Prejudice), Dominic Cooper (The History Boys), and the inestimable Emma Thompson. Only a select few were able »

If there's one thing I particularly dug about An Education it was Dominic Cooper's smug, suave and mildly compassionate character. I mildly remembered him from The Duchess, but beyond that his roles in The History Boys and even Mamma Mia! are lost on me. Perhaps they were small and forgettable or just plain forgettable, but he was one cool cat in An Education and it's nice to see him scoring some additional work even if it is for Lee Tamahori, the director of the disappointing Bond film Die Another Day and xXx: State of the Union.
The film is The Devil's Double and is described by Screen Daily as a taut action tale about the extraordinary life of Latif Yahia. Cooper will play Yahia, a dead ringer for Saddam Hussein's sadistic and widely despised son, was forced against his will to stand in for Uday in potentially dangerous situations. »

One of headlining films at GrimmUpNorth was festival director Simeon Halligan's first feature: Splintered. The GrimmUpNorth horror festival itself was somewhat based around the release of this film, as the producers rented screens at the Printworks Odeon in Manchester as a means to publicise the film, while gathering other various titles to create a one-off festival that managed, as far as I'm concerned, to be a great success. Splintered screened on Saturday evening with a packed-out cinema of eager horror fans, and after a slight technical hitch the film played to great applause. The plot centers around a somewhat emo-ish teenager called Sophie (Holly Weston), who organises a trip to North Wales with her friends, and they drive off in search of a local legend.
The film begins with a young girl, »

Over the weekend, the Internet was abuzz with rumors that Jude Law and Robert DeNiro would be joining the cast of Kenneth Branagh's Thor, but GossipCop claims that a rep for Law has denied the casting, calling the rumors "not true." The report also found the DeNiro casting dubious as well.
What isn't a rumor is that Dominic Cooper (Mamma Mia!, The History Boys) is up for a part in the comic book movie. In an interview with Movieline, Cooper was caught with some Thor script pages, specifically for the role of Fandral, one of a trio of Thor's friends called the Warriors Three. Once caught with what Cooper called "confidential pages" of the Thor script, Cooper was quick to say that his casting was "absolutely not" finalized.
So, at this point, all that's finalized is Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, and Natalie Portman as Thor's human love interest, »

After scorching the screen in the film adaptation of The History Boys, Dominic Cooper could have parlayed his heat and good looks into generic leading man status. Instead, the 31-year-old actor has taken supporting roles in a series of interesting films (well, a series of interesting films and Mamma Mia!). Cooper's currently got two movies in theaters: Lone Scherfig's An Education, where he plays Peter Sarsgaard's wealthy best friend, and Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, where director John Krasinski hands Cooper the script's juiciest monologue and lets him run with away with the entire movie.
A few weeks ago, I sat down with the London native to discuss both movies, though talk soon turned to the possibility of a Mamma Mia! sequel and a huge, hush-hush blockbuster he's currently auditioning for. Which one? Read on and see. »

Q: Dear Omniscient Primate: What do you think of the strongly implied love between Dean Winchester and Castiel on Supernatural? Everyone is talking about “Wincest,” but it seems that the potential and actual romance between a man and an angel doesn’t get enough focus. Do you see any chances of an on-screen kiss between the two? -- Marc
Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Castiel (Misha Collins) do some
awfully close talking in a recent Supernatural episode
A: As much as it saddens me to say this, I think you’re practicing wishful thinking, probably because Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins are two of the three hottest actors currently on TV (the third one being Jared Padalecki!).
That said, the actors definitely have a terrific chemistry together, probably because – and again, »

Cinema is filled with multi-talented young actors who bring to life all types of characters. Sometimes, a role is given to the wrong guy - just because he has the looks (pin-up pretty, looks awesome wearing trunks) and the connection (a powerful talent agent at his side). But when the role is given to the right guy - moviegoers get to witness something unique, memorable and powerful, even magical. Anyway, even the 'right guy' needs an agent, of course...

- - - Underrated versus Overrated: If you've watched Jumper, then you'll notice the difference between Jamie Bell and Hayden Christensen - Bell has undeniable screen presence, I can't say the same with Hayden. It could have been different if Tom Sturridge was retained to play Hayden's part. Anyway, who am I to argue? Christensen has more box office appeal than the relatively unknown Sturridge, but acting-wise?

What constitute good acting? What makes a good actor? Are there certain steps one must follow in order to become an actor or is it a gift or a natural talent and requires no formal training? These are the questions we'll try to answer - and before we begin, let me just say, I have been patiently waiting for an 'opportunity' like this, and I would like to thank one tMF viewer for the vigorous and insightful comments on 'good acting' and the case between Ben Barnes, Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp.

There are many things in this world that I find truly baffling. Why are we destroying our marine habitats so that rich Japanese restaurants can sell expensive soup? Why do we demand that politicians solve all our problems for us, while secretly willing them to fail? Why do we keep expecting Guy Ritchie to make another good film? But perhaps the most baffling of all is the fact that Whose Afraid of Virginia Woolf? has never been released on DVD in Britain. It is perhaps the finest filmic adaptation of a stage play ever rendered on celluloid. But only American audiences are able to enjoy it in the comfort of their own homes. Adaptations of plays can often be morbidly dull. They rely on the same visceral energy and tension that works so well in a theatre but is almost impossible to transfer onto a video recording that will be »

Here's a trailer for the coming-of-age drama An Education, starring Carey Mulligan and Peter Sarsgaard.Premiering at this year's Sundance festival to some excitement, it's a fictionalised, names-changed version of journalist Lynn Barber’s unusual memoir, in which as a teenage overachieving schoolgirl she flirts with the London criminal underworld at the risk of her place at Oxford. It was originally published in the quarterly anthology Granta, but now constitutes the title story in Barber's collection of autobiographical sketches. The screenplay is by Fever Pitch / High Fidelity author Nick Hornby, and the similarly pitch-hitting cast also includes Rosamund Pike, Alfred Molina, Emma Thompson, and The History Boys' Dominic Cooper. The director is the Danish Lone Scherfig, whose sole previous English-language outing is the sweetly oddball Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself from 2002. If the trailer looks like a standard period drama with a May-to-December relationship at its centre, rest assured »
