Sin City 2 is a sequel to Sin City (2005), which was based on a series of comics by American comic artist Frank Miller that first appeared in Dark Horse Presents comic books, issues 51-62 from April of 1991 to June of 1992. Miller was also involved in writing the screenplay for this movie.
Sin City stories were not, originally, published in chronological order. The first book, (later titled:) The Hard Goodbye, was published first, but Marv's execution, after 18 months of death-row, is the last event in the Sin City timeline. For example, the story That Yellow Bastard was published as the 4th book, but Hartigan's suicide takes place approximately four years before Marv meets Goldie for the first time.(EDIT: the fact that Marv's execution is the last event is based on a comment by Miller, but in the short story And Behind Door Number Three... Wendy appears to be wearing Marv's necklace (the cross); if she is, then Marv gave it to her the last night before his execution, so ABDN3 might actually take place after Marv died, but it's not certain). So, everytime you see a character, who we've seen die, in the movie, it simply means that the particular story takes place before his/her death. The stories A Dame To Kill For and the (yet untitled) Unshelved Nancy Story (which have been confirmed for the second movie) take place between the ending of TYB and the beginning of THG, the former partly overlapping THG.In Sin City, dead characters stay dead. No-one is brought back from the dead. Marv was killed in the first book (and movie), but he has appeared in other stories, that take place before those events.
The stories recently confirmed by Miller in an interview, are:- A Dame To Kill For, Sin City Book 2,- An Unshelved Nancy Story, which Miller was working on a decade ago, and has now finished for the movie; the storyline was first mentioned by Miller in the BLAM! section of That Yellow Bastard 6#,- some short stories, Miller said: "a couple of Blue-Eyes stories" [which are Blue-Eyes, Wrong Turn and Wrong Track, unsure if all will be included], and "an Old Town Girls' Story" [And Behind Door Number Three.. being practically the only one to fit that description.]As has been said before, Sin City books have not been published in chronological order. As the movie contains several stories, the terms sequel or prequel can't be applied. The Unshelved Nancy Story takes place after the events of That Yellow Bastard, supposedly (this being based on a comment by miller almost 10 years ago) two years after Hartigans suicide (which in turn is four years before The Hard Goodbye begins). Not much is known about the story, but gathering from the few comments Miller made over the years, the story is "about Nancy trying to cope with the death of Hartigan", "...will feature that lovable juggernaut Marv" and "...show you a whole new side of Nancy that will break your heart". This would make it a sequel to the That Yellow Bastard -story, but a prequel to the other two (The Hard Goodbye, The Big Fat Kill).Note: the popular rumour has been that Nancy would get her revenge on the Roarks on Hartigans behalf "Kill Bill Style". This is not based on anything by Miller, and Senator Roark was very much alive in the end of The Hard Goodbye, which is two years after this story. The rumour doesn't look that likely to be proven true.A Dame To Kill For begins a few months before Marv meets Goldie, and partly overlaps The Hard Goodbye. A Dame To Kill for is essentially a Dwight-story, which explains Dwights own comment about being a "killer with a new face". This makes it a prequel to The Big Fat Kill (and in a sense to The Hard Goodbye), but it has practically no connection to That Yellow Bastard, other than taking place after it and in the same city. The correct placing of the mentioned short stories is difficult and not that relevant; the Blue-Eyes stories all take place before the events of The Big Fat Kill, and And Behind Door Number Three... may actually be after Wendy visits Marv in deathrow, as she is seen wearing his necklace (the cross).
Originally, there was some talk about them (FM&RR) doing it right after the first one, but then RR started working on "Grind House", and Miller had his own projects. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/sin_city_2/news/1647795/ http://www.rottentomatoes.com/news/1647846/After Grind House, Miller informed us that the script is ready, and was hoping to get filming before summer. http://www.worstpreviews.com/headline.php?id=2729&src=bookThat was quickly proven a false hope, as rumours started circulating that RR would be doing "Barbarella" and Miller "The Spirit". Michael Madsen made the situation worse by saying that the movie might never be made. Miller replied that the script is done, but there has been some problems he "don't even want to understand". http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/article/madsen%20grindhouse%20has%20put%20sin%20city%202%20in%20doubt_1032664 http://www.darkhorizons.com/news07/070531k.php http://scribbleking.typepad.com/sin_city/Recently, at comic-con, Miller indirectly blamed the Weinstein Company for the delay. http://www.darkhorizons.com/news07/070727p.phpEarlier (sorry, i missed this one) Miller estimated it's going to take atleast a year before they start working on Sin City 2, and said that the problems are indeed financial (dated 060707): http://movies.about.com/od/300/a/fmiller060707.htmStatus of the project is unknown. (I'll try to update here any new info)Currently, Miller is busy working on Will Eisner's The Spirit, which is to be released January 2009, and Rodriquez is apparantly still hoping to do the Barbarella remake he planned, although no party has agreed to finance the movie.
Depp: Probably not. The thing is, Rodriquez told MTV that he wants Depp for the role of Wallace, a character in the story Hell and Back, which he and Miller plan for the [possible] third movie, Sin City 3.For reasons unknown, multiple sites, that cite the MTV interview as their source, managed to somehow misunderstand; that HAB and Depp were to be in the second movie, which contradicts practically everything Miller has said about the stories to be included in the second movie. Nevertheless, the rumour about Depp joining the cast spread extremely fast and was even told as a fact on some tv channels. The mentioned interview can be read here: http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1555630/20070326/story.jhtmlMiller has also said, clearly, that Depp will not be in Sin City 2: http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20194343_2,00.htmlBanderas: Banderas was also mentioned in the above-linked interview, but the info is even more vague. Later, Banderas said that he had no deal with Rodriquez, nor had they talked about it, but he'd join the cast if Rodriquez would have him.see here: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/news/1648752/
1. Becky is not in any other Sin City story apart from The Big Fat Kill.2. There's no reason to change A Dame To Kill For to include Bledel.3. Nothing by Milller suggests that she'd be in the Unshelved Nancy Story.4. Although Bledel claimed that she'd return, she herself said that she had not talked with director Rodriquez and was under the false impression that her character didn't die (the events of the second movie take place before her death).5. Would they fly her to Austin, Texas to do just a cameo? Some users have suggested she could me merged with the assasin code-named Blue-Eyes, mainly because of the similar eye-colour(!), but the if the completely different background stories of the two characters is not reason enough, Blue-Eyes is already a trained assasin before the events of The Big Fat Kill ie before Becky betrays the Old Town Girls. So no, it doesn't seem likely that she'll return.
The question explains it: according to IMDb. It is user submitted information that need not be confirmed by any official source. On this matter, it's incorrect information.1) When the first movie came out, the directors said that they'd do atleast two more movies.2) Sin City 2 was originally supposed to come out in 2006 (the delays are explained elsewhere in the FAQ).3) Because of the comment by the directors, IMDb created a page for Sin City 3 aswell, and a page on IMDb has to have a year, so they slapped on 2008, originally.4) Now that Sin City 2 is delayed and delayed they're fixing the date for Sin City 2, but updating the year for Sin City 3 has fallen behind. So, Sin City 3 is not coming out before Sin City 2. It's a mistake no-one has corrected so far. The bigger issue is, it's uncertain that we'll ever see a third movie. Even the second is hanging in the air as the directors are both busy with other projects, and the Weinstein company hasn't agreed to finance even the second film. Incidentally, the page for Sin City 3 (movie) was removed from Wikipedia, as there was no proof that such a film would ever be filmed. One has to remember, that even if the directors said they want to do it, neither of them has enough pull so they'd get it done on their own.Currently, it's unsure if even the second movie will ever be made, and it's nothing short of a miracle if the third one is. No matter what IMDb says about the release years.
Dwight had some extensive facial surgery done to him in A Dame To Kill For, after killing someone. If you really want it spoiled for you, there's a comprehensive explanation on the matter in the Sin City FAQ.It's more likely that they will use the same actor for Dwight for the whole movie, as surgery would not change his voice and Manute is supposed to recognize Dwight's eyes, which are of course un-altered.
