"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" the Best And Worst of the Year?

29 December 2009 6:52 AM, PST | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

The people had spoken and they picked "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" as both the Best Action Movie of 2009 and the Worst Movie of the Year!

AOL's Moviefone has released its 2009 year-end movies poll and one thing is clear -- moviegoers, at least the ones voting on Moviefone, loved "The Twilight Saga: New Moon." The vampire romance saga was chosen as the Best Movie of the Year.

But my favorite question? "How would you rate 2009 overall," to which the answer was a resounding "Eh!"

Check out the full results of the Moviefone poll below:

1. What was the best movie of the year?

'New Moon' - 41%

'Avatar' - 14%

'The Hangover' - 13%

'Star Trek' - 11%

'Up' - 9%

'Inglourious Basterds' - 9%

'Up in the Air' - 2%

2. What was the worst movie of the year?

'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Six

27 December 2009 10:09 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Last Airbender

Opens: July 2nd 2010

Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel

Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.

Analysis: Its been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan who started it as a household name with labels of a moodern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".

Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit cartoon series »

And 2009's Biggest Bomb Was…Not What You Think

24 December 2009 6:20 AM, PST | E! Online - UK | See recent E! Online - UK news »

The Twilight sequel was kinda popular. The Transformers sequel was kinda gigantic. Land of the Lost was neither. But you didn't need us to tell you that. You needed us to digest the box-office year that was, and spit out: the Nine Things About 2009 You Didn't Know, but Are About to Learn: 1. New Moon beat Harry Potter. In bang for buck. New Moon made more than 12 times its $50 million budget ($635 million worldwide); Half-Blood Prince "only" made about four times its $250 million price tag. 2. Harry Potter beat everything. The sixth boy-wizard adventure was the year's overall No. 1 film, with $924 million in the worldwide bank, even if Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was the No. 1 »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Five

23 December 2009 10:10 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Hippie Hippie Shake

Opens: 2010

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby

Director: Beeban Kidron

Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.

Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »

Tom Hanks nears next Dan Brown adaptation ‘The Lost Symbol’

22 December 2009 7:54 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

While details are sketchy at best, Tom Hanks appears ready to play Robert Langdon again.

Hanks, who portrayed the professor of religious iconology and symbology in ’06’s The Da Vinci Code and it’s follow-up, ’09’s Angels & Demons, is expected to return to a third entry in the series, The Lost Symbol.

“[He is] all but ready to return to the character of Robert Langdon,” said a source.

According to CinemaBlend, Columbia Pictures is looking to fast-track the project for a 2012 release. There’s no official word from Hanks’ camp nor has director Ron Howard announced his return to helm a third film based on  Dan Brown’s popular series of novels.

The thing is, even though Angels & Demons was barely a blip here in America, it made $350 million internationally. There’s still tons of money to be made here and Columbia is willing to keep spending to make more movies. The Lost Symbol is coming. »

Best Movies Of 2009, By Kurt Loder

A pretty good year.

George Clooney in .Up in the Air.

Photo: Dale Robinette/ Paramount

It seems to be a critical tradition to bewail the awfulness of each year's movies. But how often is this really true? With the annual caveat that it's impossible (and meaningless) to designate one movie or filmmaker as the "best," here are a number of 2009 pictures I liked a lot in various aspects, with one entrant in each category selected, fairly arbitrarily, as the "best," and equally worthy contenders noted below them.

Best Picture:

"Up in the Air" A mainstream film with a complex heart and a brain, too. Not exactly a comedy, not precisely a drama, but as close to a perfect movie as any other this year.

Also really good: "The Hurt Locker": Can it actually have been seven years since Kathryn Bigelow's last picture? This scrappy low-budget film, with a breakthrough performance by Jeremy Renner, »

Bob Hollywood's Top Ten Films of Twenty-Oh-Nine!

16 December 2009 1:29 PM, PST | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

Illustration by Tim Sheaffer. All right, kiddos! Here it is, the Bob Hollywood list, two double-oh nine edish. Now, listen, I don't see every picture that comes down the pike. Never saw Antichrist, for instance, among others. (I mean, hell, they don't pay me that kind of money.) But anyhoots, out of the many, many flicks I did happen to check out this year, here are the ones I liked the most. As for the top three, well, any one of them might actually be my fave of the year. As Bobby Dylan once put it, "It depends on how I'm feelin'." 10. Where the Wild Things Are A little goofy, but I liked it. 9. Land of the Lost I just love it when guys take big Hollywood money and make something totally insane. 8. Public Enemies This flick is a poem. And, no kidding, it's a subtle critique of the Bush years to boot. »

Top Ten Tuesday: Worst Movies of 2009

15 December 2009 1:00 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Another year has come and nearly gone, which means it’s once again that time of year to reflect on the cornucopia of movies released in theaters over the last 12 months. While we’re all eager to find out what movies rank amongst the best of 2009, the Movie Geeks prefer to start with the bad news and finish with the good news. So, this week we pull all the stops and lay out the Bottom Ten Worst Movies of 2009.

10. Whiteout

There’s pretty much only one thing this thriller (in name only) has plenty of.  White.  It’s not exciting.  It’s not suspenseful.  It doesn’t make you care one iota whether anyone lives or dies.  It’s really one of those movies that, at the end of the day, is just a waste of space, time, and money.  When your “thriller” gets its culminating action scenes and suspense »

What Might -- and Might Not -- Win the Visual Effects Oscar

14 December 2009 3:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

When it comes to the Academy Award for best visual effects, you might think there are too many possible contenders to put on one ballot. And you'd be right. That's why the Academy Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee has narrowed it down to a list of 15 semifinalists, from which the nominees and eventual winner will be chosen. Here's what's in the running now:

Angels & Demons, Avatar, Coraline, A Christmas Carol, District 9, G-Force, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Sherlock Holmes, Star Trek, Terminator Salvation, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, 2012, Watchmen, and Where the Wild Things Are.

In a couple weeks, the committee will narrow the list down even further, to seven entries, and then 15-minute excerpts of those seven films will be shown to all the members of the Academy's Visual Effects Branch. The branch will then vote to determine the three actual nominees. »

Top 10 Worst Films of 2009

14 December 2009 7:10 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

I saw a lot of terrible films this year, and these are some of the worst. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they aren’t enjoyable of course, and I take quite a bit of pleasure from watching a bad film. They’re in no particular order, and there are links to any that I reviewed in full. Enjoy! Angels and Demons Rome itself was the sole highlight of this absolute shocker. I enjoyed how the scientists at the Cern Large Hadron Collider were portrayed as being a bit iffy about the science behind their experiments. Relentlessly idiotic. Dragonball: Evolution Did anyone else watch this? This is the best film of the year based on a Japanese anime series…oh wait, that would be Blood: The Last Vampire (see below). 80 minutes of big hair, American accents and rubbish special effects. Terminator Salvation Some excellent action set pieces were the only »

Top 10 Comedy Movies of 2009

8 December 2009 4:52 AM, PST | movies.about.com | See recent movies.about.com news »

Dramas aren't drawing audiences (unless they're dramas loaded with action), but comedies continue to do well at the box office. That said, there were a lot of disappointing laffers released in 2009 (Year One, Land of the Lost, Observe and Report, etc). Thankfully, there were enough decent comedies to make up for the ones that just didn't work. Here are my picks for the funniest movies of 2009. Remember, these are my personal favorites - feel free to disagree.

Alice In Wonderland Goes SyFy - Is it Worth the Watch?

4 December 2009 10:18 PM, PST | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

I'll be the first to admit it: I hate remakes - especially of classics. I despise them. There should be a law against them. I believe that actors like Denzel Washington and John Travolta are geniuses. And, although I may have dreamed about a "What If?" film coupling of "Travolta meets Washington," I loathed the fact that it was done by remaking the classic film The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. So, I boycotted. Cry all you want, but understand this: somethings are sacred. You don't remake "Pelham" and you don't remake Bewitched or Land of the Lost. I reiterate: you just don't! I'll leave it at that. However, like most rules, this one does have its exceptions - albeit rare. For instance, two years ago the SyFy released a remake of The Wizard of Oz, entitled Tin Man. I balked at the undertaking at first, but found myself »

Danny McBride, That Funny Dude From That Movie

2 December 2009 7:49 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Actor and sometime screenwriter Danny McBride has risen to the top of Hollywood's comedy food chain, having handily stolen scenes from Ben Stiller ("Tropic Thunder") and Will Ferrell ("Land of the Lost"), and become the headliner of his own series as washed-up baseballer Kenny Powers on HBO's "Eastbound & Down," a series he helped conceive. McBride's success is deserved, though he certainly gets by with a little help from his friends. Long before he was the "thug life"-lovin' drug supplier in director David Gordon Green's "Pineapple Express," he served as a second unit director on Green's 2000 arthouse breakthrough "George Washington." And he wouldn't have had a cameo in Jody Hill's "Observe and Report" if he hadn't co-wrote and starred in Hill's indie cult fave "The Foot Fist Way" as a renegade Taekwondo instructor who beats up kids.

Momentarily ditching his usual partners in crime, McBride can next be »

This decade’s biggest movie failure: Eddie Murphy’s ‘Pluto Nash’

30 November 2009 11:16 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Color me shocked on this one: The Eddie Murphy space adventure, The Adventures of Pluto Nash, is by far the biggest flop of the decade. The 2002 film was made for a reported $100 million but only took in $4.4 million domestically. That hurts.

Though the movie isn’t as bad as some of the other films on the below list, Pluto Nash was definitely one of the huge stinkers during the beginning of this decade.

John Travolta’s Battlefield Earth comes in at No.2 with Land of the Lost, Gigle and Town and Country rounding out the top five.

Here’s the top disasters from 2000-2009:

1. The Adventures Of Pluto Nash

* Release date: August 6th, 2002

* Estimated cost: $100 million

* Domestic gross: $4.4 million

2. Battlefield Earth

* Release date: May 12th, 2000

* Estimated cost: $75 million

* Domestic gross: $21 million

3. Land Of The Lost

* Release date: June 5th, 2009

* Estimated cost: $100 million

* Domestic gross: $65 million

4. Gigli
