No. The movie starts in 1939, the opening of World War II. It then shifts two years later, 1941. The film depicts this year as the infamous bombing of Darwin by Japanese aircraft. However, the bombing occured in 1942, not 1941. The other major historical error is when Magarri is killed by Japanese troops. The Japanese never set foot on Australian soil. They bombed Darwin then left.
