Helen Hunt May Replace Maura Tierney on 'Parenthood'

15 September 2009 1:49 AM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

There have been some considerations that Helen Hunt should replace Maura Tierney on "Parenthood". NBC, according to THR, has approached the feature film star to join the series and Hunt is said to be weighing on the offer.

Hunt is supposed to take over Tierney's Sarah, one of the four Braverman siblings that become the center of attention on the series. She is a financially-challenged single mother who returns home to her parents and siblings in Berkeley, Calif. The other siblings are played by Peter Krause, Erika Christensen and Dax Shepard.

Tierney has played Sarah in the pilot before she retracted from the show because she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Last week, NBC released a statement that the actress has quit the show for good. "Maura Tierney regrets that she will not be able to continue her role on 'Parenthood' due to a conflict with the production »

134 New Names Invited to Join the Academy

1 July 2009 1:08 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Yesterday came the yearly announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as it extended 134 invitations to several artists and executives "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" read the press release. Of course all of them can decline, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that to happen as all who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2009 to the Academy's roster of voting members. "These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," said Academy President Sid Ganis. "It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the Academy, and I welcome each of them to our ranks." The list follows below and reading around the best analysis I saw of it came from Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience who, among other things, pointed out the addition of longtime Darren Aronofsky's »

26 March 2009 | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

"Adventureland" is around the corner. The Greg Mottola directed and written film finds theatres on April 3rd. Mottola is responsible for "Superbad," one of the funniest films in recent times. A talented cast works their magic in "Adventureland" including Jesse Eisenberg of "The Hunting Party," "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds ("Smokin' Aces"), Kristen Wiig ("Forgetting Sarah Marshall") and Bill Hader who also notched up laughs in "Superbad" alongside Seth Rogen.   For the sake of interest, we've briefly compiled a list of amusement park scenes from films we found most memorable. These can be found after you read what "Adventureland" is all about.   What's "Adventureland" about?   It's the summer of 1987, and James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg), an uptight recent college grad, can't wait to embark on his dream tour of Europe. But when his parents (Wendie Malick and Jack Gilpin) announce they can no longer subsidize his trip, James has little »

It's the summer of 1987, and James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg), an uptight recent college grad, can't wait to embark on his dream tour of Europe. But when his parents (Wendie Malick and Jack Gilpin) announce they can no longer subsidize his trip, James has little choice but to take a lowly job at a local amusement park.  Forget about German beer, world-famous museums and cute French girls-James' summer will now be populated by belligerent dads, stuffed pandas, and screaming kids high on cotton candy.  Lucky for James, what should have been his worst summer ever turns into quite an adventure as he discovers love in the most unlikely place with his captivating co-worker Em (Kristen Stewart), and learns to loosen up.

The film stars Jesse Eisenberg ("The Squid and the Whale"), Kristen Stewart ("Twilight, "Into the Wild"), Ryan Reynolds ("Just Friends," "Van Wilder"),  Martin Starr ("Knocked Up," "Superbad"), and "Saturday Night Live »

The comedy stars  Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds, Martin Starr, Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader. Greg Mottola, director of the uproariously funny "Superbad," directs from his own screenplay. Stewart is fresh off the success of "Twilight" and should command a strong audience pull just from that. Multi-talented Eisenberg's last film was 2007's "The Hunting Party" alongside Terrence Howard and Richard Gere. See the gallery now! What's it about? It's the summer of 1987, and James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg), an uptight recent college grad, can't wait to embark on his dream tour of Europe. But when his parents (Wendie Malick and Jack Gilpin) announce they can no longer subsidize his trip, James has little choice but to take a lowly job at a local amusement park. »

Another Big Win for "Slumdog Millionaire"

6 January 2009 11:39 PM, PST | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

"Slumdog Millionaire" is the one to beat this Oscar season! This time, the Alliance of Women Film Journalists awarded the movie its highest honor -- Best Picture of their Eda (Excellent Dynamic Activism) Awards.

Sean Penn also scored a Best Actor win for "Milk."

But my favorite categories of the Eda Awards? Their Special Mention Awards with fun categories like the Hall Of Shame Award ("27 Dresses") or Actress Most in Need Of A New Agent Award (gasp, Kate Hudson).

The Alliance of Women Film Journalists is a great organization with members who are "highly qualified professional female movie critics, reporters and feature writers working in print, broadcast and online media."

Check their site here.

won’t you watch the merely very-good movies of 2008?

6 January 2009 1:08 PM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

In this season of Oscar nominations and critics’ awards, gala ceremonies and acceptance speeches, won’t you give a thought to the merely very-good films of 2008, those that could not make it to the rarefied ranks of the best of the the best of the best simply because they lacked, perhaps, the benefit of the presence of Meryl Streep or Heath Ledger? They’re worthy movies, and they need your love. And they’ve even made themselves available on DVD so you can take them home and try them out. There’s no obligation, but for little more than the cost of a fancy latte at one of those downtown coffee bars, you could make a neglected, underprivileged movie very happy. Call now, and we’ll send you a full-color brochure with beautiful pictures of worthy movies for you to choose from, including: • Dramas such as Stop-Loss [Region 1] [Region 2] (from Boys Don't Cry director Kimberly Peirce, »
