Loved it!, 18 September 2006
9/10
Author: jlv6907 from United States

I saw this film at the Toronto International Film Festival over the weekend. I picked the movie and my fiancé gave me some grief over it while we waited to go in, but he ended up loving it!! Brittany Murphy is very entertaining, and the entire cast is enthralling. This is a very cute and funny movie. It pokes fun at itself and the one-liners just keep coming. The cameo appearances by Orlando Bloom and Gwyneth Paltro are brief, so don't go just for the glimpse of a favorite actor/actress, but they do add the the appeal of the film. The entire theater was laughing throughout the movie. I rank this movie up with Love, Actually and Four Weddings and a Funeral.

A great romantic comedy, 20 July 2007
10/10
Author: Barry Goold from Los Angeles

This movie had its US premiere last night at Outfest. I was at the screening and was enchanted with everything about this movie. It's an homage to romantic comedies that knows that a romantic comedy isn't anything like real life. The performances, including actors from TV's Heroes and Brothers & Sisters, are great. The script, by the director best known for "Truth or Dare", is funny and charming. This is definitely the best movie I've seen so far at Outfest this year. It may even be the best movie I've ever seen at Outfest, ever!

If you like Notting Hill, Four Weddings & A Funeral or any other romantic comedy of that style, you'll definitely enjoy this little gem as well.

A feel good movie with a good laugh, 16 March 2008
7/10
Author: deniz-desiree from Zürich, Switzerland

For people who find romantic movies boring and inedible, here comes a movie you might be able to enjoy with someone who strives to watch a romantic comedy. Not only is the movie funny, but all in it's place: It dose not overly exaggerate, it includes the audience in the spectacle, keeps them in action and not to forget makes them end up with a smile on their face. Brittany Murphy played her part adorably well and catches the heart of the viewer, not to mention us wanting her to be happy and find the one "true love". I can only speak for myself when I say I dislike tacky romantic comedies, as mentioned before this was very much kept in limit. I will certainly watch it again and will further recommend it.

fun, quirky love story that shows how strange and wonderful love is, 30 June 2008
9/10
Author: muralguy from San Diego

I really liked this one. The movie definitely grows on you, and then all the sudden you realize how wonderful it is. It really shows how our preconceived notions about love are sometimes what blocks us from seeing real love. It really has a surprisingly deep message about love, and is definitely worth watching. It has some clever twists, great dialog, silly moments, and is generally a great time. I would put in the same genre as "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and as silly and absurd as "Notting Hill." Plus, Brittany Murphy is fun to look at, as always, and there is some cute guys for the ladies to like. A great date movie, but also a great movie for old married couples who want to rediscover their love.

Metatheatric humor, 30 June 2008
9/10
Author: veiled_stars from Ontario, Canada

Love (and Other Disasters) is not a typical romantic comedy, primarily as it pokes fun at the various aspects of the genre - predictable plot, grand romantic finale, happy coincidences etc. It is a light-hearted tongue in cheek movie that has all the spunk of a good romantic comedy with enough self-effacing genre-specific humor to keep it fresh and non-cloyingly sweet.

Other viewers have noted that Brittany Murphy is stiff and unbelievable, and that other characters are overly dramatic. But as the film draws attention to its very fictitious, theatrical nature, the characters fall into place as humorous fabricated, sensationalized versions of human nature in this light satire.

Also worth noting is the film's lovely approach towards homosexuality. Admittedly Peter's love life is a side-line plot, but what is shown has a ring of sincerity to it and avoids sensationalizing or stereotyping homosexual characters. While this movie is unlikely to win any Oscars, it is definitely one of the best romantic comedies I've seen.

Fast-paced, lighthearted comedy ..., 5 May 2009
7/10
Author: vram22 from United States

If you're looking for a pleasant, upbeat innocent romantic comedy - this will fit the bill. The tone, dialog, goof-ball misinterpretations and even rich colors are reminiscent of the 1950s. But - it's made for a modern audience too. For instance, we see Brittany Murphy rolling around multiple times virtually nude (won't have seen that 50 years ago!), we also have her surrounding herself with gay men (who are also looking for love) - and to boot, she shares a room with a gay man.

This is a fun movie and something is always happening. Murphy plays an "assistant" at a fashion magazine and tries to play matchmaker for her gay roommate. What she doesn't know is that one of the potential beaus is actually straight and really interested in her ... and the story progresses from there.

Brittany Murphy is at the center of the story. She's got her hair dyed black and has a distinctive, glamorous Spanish image. She puts in a strong performance as a kind-hearted but romantically averse do-gooder. There are more than a few laugh-out loud moments here, which makes it a wonderfully watchable movie.

See it!, 28 March 2008
8/10

Just watched this as part of the opening night gala of the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. Lived up to all my expectations. A fun, funny romantic comedy with dialogue thats stylish (not just stylized) and a great cast. Brittany Murphy and Matthew Rhys are especially good, and Catherine Tate gave a performance that left me wondering why she confines herself to catchphrases on her show. Also, as was pointed out in the introduction on the night, this is a movie that shows a London closer to the one I actually live in (though the director, Alek Keshishian, did point out he himself had lived in London for ten years!). A great way to start the festival. Deserves a wide audience.

Nothing but a good movie!, 11 March 2008
7/10
Author: whereis-1 from Russian Federation

The first important note is that i had never intended to watch this film but when i started watching i just couldn't stop going further! When looking briefly, the plot seems pretty ordinary but the whole composition leaves you nowhere to run!The movie gets you and holds you to the very end just for you to enjoy good actors' jobs and well-worked music score. What about the story? OK,here it goes.It presents Jacks, who works at a glamorous magazine and shares a flat with a gay screenwriter Peter.Jacks sleeps with her ex-boyfriend James but doesn't seem to love him though she hardly attempts to break up with him either.Peter falls in love at first sight when he rushes into some guy at a hotel hall. The story follows them as they try to solve their problems and meet happy endings. The best thing about this film is that you never know where and when it is to meet its own end.And when it does you have something in your head to think about. And that's a great achievement nowadays!

Sometimes you just want a good laugh, 14 February 2008
9/10

Can you say "Feel Good!" This is a really charming film. A friend invited me to a screening in San Francisco and I didn't know what to expect. Gorgeous shots of London, super witty, fast dialogue, cool music throughout, great performances and surprising cameos throughout. I wasn't too familiar with Brittany Murphy before but she's adorable in this film. The English gal who plays her best friend is hilarious. To me, the film is along the lines of Love Actually. There's room for all kinds of films and sometimes you want realistic drama, documentary and so on. But there's also a time for kicking back and having a laugh. So if you're looking for intelligent, light entertainment, see this film!

Offbeat rom-com that my wife and I enjoyed., 18 August 2008
Author: TxMike from Houston, Tx, USA, Earth

*** This review may contain spoilers ***

This one is a real mixed bag, mostly quirky characters in a quirky movie. But it works. There is a little bit of "10" in it, where Dudley Moore chases Bo Derek and when he finally catches her he finds out she is not that desirable after all. It makes fun of all the stories where someone sees a cute person and decides that is the person they are meant to be with.

The movie starts with words being typed, as if a script were being written, then the scene is what was written. Brittany Murphy is Emily 'Jacks' Jackson, living and working in London. Her roommate and best friend is Matthew Rhys as the gay Peter Simon. Jacks keeps up a relationship with her recent former boyfriend because it is convenient, but mostly it is safe, to be with someone you KNOW will never be your long term partner.

Much of the movie involves Peter trying to find a person, a guy, who he accidentally ran into, literally, in a hotel entrance, assuming the other guy was gay and perfectly suited for him. When he finally catches him, much like Dudley Moore found out, you can't judge a book by its cover.

Santiago Cabrera is Paolo Sarmiento, assistant to a famous gay photographer, and Jacks assumes the young Paolo is a boyfriend, and treats him like all the other gay guys she knows, running around in her underwear or inviting him into the bathroom to talk as she is taking a bath. But we know right away that Paolo is not gay, and in fact is really interested in Jacks. There is much humor as that confusion plays out.

But in the end what the story comes down to is a very good one, and a very important one. Do we look for love in the wrong way? Do we keep waiting for that special person to sweep us up? Or, does true love begin right inside us? Is it a decision that we make, and that the other person makes, to really get to know each other and commit to a relationship? Jacks has to make that decision with Paolo and we think we know where it is headed.
