In conclusion -- yes, I know that's an odd way to start a review, but, as far as I'm concerned there is no argument -- 'Unearthly Harvest' is one of the most innovative and resourceful pieces of indie cinema within the past several years.
Operating on a shoestring budget, small-time auteur John Swanson managed to weave a tantalizing yarn of suspense, dread, and mystery into a warm-hearted, spine-tingling roller-coaster ride of chills, thrills, and even a few spills!! Ryan Reuter plays -- well, not so much "plays" as "is" -- the protagonist, Robert, a role that would have been filled by a young Paul Newman in his younger days. I would continue mentioning actors, but it would consume to much of your and my time.
As far as the narrative aspects are concerned, BRILLIANCE is all that I will say. BILLIANCE and this: After a grisly murder of two young lovers, a small time town in America's heartland is thrown into a maelstrom of fear and apprehension, when a new guy comes to town...a new guy by the name of Desmond! Desmond conducts Satan-based rituals and Robert tries to stop him.
My only real complaints arise with the mediocrity that was the musical score of none other than Frank Macchia...or should I say Frank Macc--crap--hia. The music did not encourage any of the plot or other formal aspects of cinema or so I am told.
In conclusion, I look forward to seeing more output from John Swanson in the future. He is a diligent and heartfelt filmmaker with a passion for what he does that really comes through in his work. Keep it going', John! PEACE.
