The immortal wizard Shazam, who dwells in the Rock of Eternity, seeks a champion to fight for the cause of truth and justice. He finds Billy Batson, a young orphan who was thrown out by a cruel and uncaring uncle. Despite the hardship he has faced in his life, Billy's spirit has not succumbed to evil. Shazam sends an emissary to lead him to the Rock, where he explains to Billy what he has been chosen for. Imbuing him with the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury, Billy Batson becomes Captain Marvel by speaking the name of the wizard: Shazam!
