An awkward caricature misses an easy target
Roger Hane22 September 2008
Yes, it was high time someone did a movie skewering MLMs. This movie does it, though not as artfully or poignantly as we would have hoped. Mulholland touches upon all the aspects of MLM life and techniques. But in general, it feels like an amateurish production in all of its aspects. Acting, directing, cinematography, editing, they all feel amateur. Though Hoppe was certainly the right man for his role, he tried a little too hard to come across as a heel. Indeed, all the characters feel like exaggerations of the people you'll find in MLMs. But only slight exaggerations. These characters aren't rare loony flukes who stumbled into an MLM. They really are typical of the people you'll find in the field, though as I said, slightly exaggerated. And the exaggeration makes it not work as a mocumentary.

There's another huge problem with the movie's form. Real life MLMers would never allow an outside camera crew to film their exploits. There are far too many secrets given away here. That and the exaggerations make this an ineffective mocumentary. Too many intimate moments are filmed as if the camera crew wasn't there. That destroys its documentary feel. A skillful mocumentary would have fantastic comedic timing to make a point of the topic's absurdity (a la "Spinal Tap"). This movie's timing is way off, due to its amateur production. Though I must compliment the women who played the MLMers' wives, as they displayed their subconscious resistance to what their husbands were doing. Well done there.

As sheer comedic entertainment, this movie won't elicit any interest. I can understand why no major distribution company picked it up. But it might be acceptable to show a friend or relative who has approached you with an MLM opportunity, or if you'd like to know about MLMs yourself. Believe me, these things really do happen in MLMs, and people like this really are in the field, though they're not quite so ridiculous. This ultimately humorless movie serves as little more than a cautionary tale. It's very hard to make a hilarious comedy about a subject that has cost so many millions of people so much money and heartache.

Sometimes Too Real For Comfort
sidunrau7 June 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This movie isn't great, but it's clean and entertaining. The feel of those caught up in the multi-level marketing closely parallels the feel I get from some I know actually involved in such things. The borderline deception, the outright deception, the self-deception and the avoidance of facing reality are pretty well demonstrated. But the acting - almost all of it (except for Mr. Hoppe, who seemed eerily perfect for the part) - was just too "high school drama class" rather than artfully portraying characters, for me. Had the actors taken their roles just a bit more seriously so that the audience could at least believe just a bit more - and therefore care a bit more - this could have been a fun hit movie. The subject matter is familiar - too familiar, in my opinion - to virtually all Americans, so all the elements were there for a good fun comedy. Better luck next time, people!

It's about time a Multi-Level Marketing spoof was made!
digiflix2 December 2005
This is a funny little flick, made in mockumentary style ( alla Spinal Tap and Best of Show. If you have ever been into, or approached by people from Amway or any other MLM, you need to see this movie. It will crack you up, ( or make you mad... This move could be about you :)

This movie is based on a a company called "Believe Industries" and follows some of its MLM'ers as they try to recruit their neighbors. As a local steel mill lays off workers, the MLM'ers pounce on them to show them how they can, "Become independently wealthy in 5 years".

It has some funny stuff about an "ex-Believer" who has an anti-MLM website. It also shows some street interviews about what people think of MLM's, which I think are real people, (not actors).

Funny show, check it out.

Not 100% True
jeremykoch29 October 2006
While I'm sure it's funny to some, it's not 100% factual. Here is why. Only a handful of people in the MLM industry do use odd tactics as shown in this movie. Unfortunately, those are the people that are focused on as a whole when it comes to judging MLM as a whole. Are you one who was claimed to have been "duped" into an MLM business? Shame on you. Either, you didn't do your research before investing your money into the company (not smart ANYWHERE you go), or you were looking for a get rich quick scheme. Sorry to say, but if you are looking for a get rich quick scheme...stay away from MLM. You can become very wealthy if you put in the hours and effort to build a successful business...but it won't build itself. If you buy a McDonald's for 1 million+ and don't show up for work...you won't make money. It's as simple as that.

Laugh out Loud Funny
piman2516 January 2006
I have had the opportunity to view this movie on two separate occasions and it was even more funny the second time around.

The world of Multi Level Marketing is a strange one and this film succeeded in making it an entertaining one also. The cast was excellent particularly Steve Anderson and Brian Clark.

The film was presented in such a way that anyone who has had any exposure to Multi Level Marketing can appreciate it. Those who have no experience with and MLM may well learn something. Those who have been deep into MLM will see familiar people and experiences.

I highly recommend this film for it's sheer entertainment value.

Take the opportunity to see this and you too will come to Believe.

Pleasantly Surprised
kgivan18 August 2006
Very funny movie. This movie will make both the MLMer and the non-MLMer laugh out loud. Everyone has been or knows someone who has participated in an MLM venture, and this movie really plays on recognizable traits of MLM people, their actions and styles. The movie plays both sides very well, including those that are against the MLM industry. The actors and Actresses play their parts very well, and are very convincing. The photography and sound was very well done. Every one needs to see this movie. It will become a classic. If you have the chance to see it, I recommend it. This movie is Napolean Dynamite worthy! I would give it two thumbs up, and 4 stars.

The Office Space of the MLM Industry
dkujanson2 September 2006
This movie does for the MLM industry what Office Space did for corporate America, Spinal Tap did for rock and roll, Zoolander did for modeling, and Napoleon Dynamite did for High School nerds - it exposes the irony, hypocrisy and (in)sincerity involved in direct sales. Some people involved in direct sales will recognize themselves and others in this movie but disagree with the content and how it is presented. Others will see the "business" as depicted in this film and agree with what they see.

There is so much subtle humor in this film that it requires multiple viewings for a thorough appreciation. I found myself laughing so much I missed the next line. If you know anyone involved in one of these businesses you will see them represented in this movie.

If you are looking for light-hearted comedy, humor that builds and funny lines you will remember and use everyday - this is the film. This is an enjoyable and entertaining movie.

It is so funny . . . because it is so true.

I Believe
Believer0624 January 2006
As indie mocumentaries go (meaning anything not done by Christopher Guest) this is actually pretty decent. I think pretty much the entire planet can relate to this film. Who hasn't been hit up for one of these businesses?

The film has it's flaws but not many. It's obvious these guys did their homework before they made this movie because it's exactly what these MLMers are like! The movie flows and culminates nicely and it has a decent soundtrack. I think what stands out the most about this movie, besides its accuracy, is the acting. Wow! There's not really a bad one in the bunch.

If you've ever been in an MLM or wonder what the people are like then this movie is for you.

I think I finally found a way to get revenge on those people who have hit me up for their MLM pyramid scheme... buy them a copy of the movie and give it to them as a "gift". :)

Way to go!

I want to see this movie again!!!!
Magrethe11 May 2006
I loved this movie! I saw it Summer 2005 at the Gloria Film Festival where it won the audience favorite award. I would love to see it again but it looks like they don't have a distributor yet. Please release this movie in theaters!!!!!!! I would pay to see it again and I'd get my friends to go and they'd get their friends to go and their friends.... Not to mention DVD sales. It's a keeper, if only I could get it.

The real-life testimonials in the movie were awesome. The storyline is funny. The actors do a great job.

See it if you get the chance. It's worth it.

I Believe this Flick is Very Funny :)
Ken_DeepStudios4 January 2006
I had the pleasure of viewing this movie at a film festival (FYI - it won the Peoples Choice Award). If you love mocumentaries and have been bothered as many times as I have with the variety of scams that masquerade as (MLM) business opportunities, this is the movie for you.

Very light hearted look into the world of Multi-Level-Marketing, following a group of people (very interesting characters) and their experience with Believe Industries. They threw in several interviews with real people (I Believe they are real anyway) that added some very humorous and interesting content. This movie is very unique, I can honestly say I have never viewed another flick that has approached/covered this very funny topic. I will be adding this movie to my DVD collection.

Laugh out loud funny
Ron-60926 January 2006
I found myself laughing out loud much more than in viewing any other movie in a long time. There are lots of very clever, unique and hilarious scenes, dialog and acting woven throughout the story. Also, a great mix of street interviews of actual people in documentary fashion integrated with the plot of the movie.

If you liked other "mocumentaries" like Best of Show, Waiting for Guffman, Spinal Tap, etc., then you will love this movie.

The quality of the movie production was great, from the acting, the creative, the musical score, etc.

Highly recommended!!!

Impressive film -- well done!
mills_net30 January 2006
I saw this movie at a local film festival and, to be honest, I wasn't expecting much. Usually, the films I've seen at festivals had something to be desired but I was completely surprised by this one.

I'm not much of an enthusiast for documentary film-making, but this one had a feature-film appeal. The opening scene was so perfectly done that I was captivated and drawn in, wondering what would happen next. The characters appeared very real to me; some were of the genuine down-to-earth type that I couldn't help but feel for them in their dire situations. Others were so fanatical and superficially vain that it made me laugh. Plus, each character's story kept me interested in them all the way to the end.

The pacing couldn't have been better. Each scene was very crisp and kept the pace of the film flowing smoothly. The dialog was real and thought-provoking; even quite hilarious at times. The cinematography was great--resembling how a documentarian would shoot his subjects with lots of closeups, capturing their facial expressions and nervousness. It was very entertaining to watch and just about every scene made me smile or chuckle.

Anyone who has ever been sucked in by an MLM or "get rich quick" scheme should see this film. It will make you a "True Believer," if you know what I mean.

This movie is HILARIOUS!!!!
mkisgirls15 February 2007
I have to admit, I really was wondering if someone could pull of a mockumentary about Multi-Level-Marketing and not make it stupid. But it is actually a pretty funny movie. In fact, I would probably classify it as a Mockumentary/Comedy just because it had so much humorous stuff.

But hey, I gotta say it is good that someone is making a movie about this. There are a lot of people that should understand about these companies. Mark Fuller is a perfect representation of one of those brainwashed, super forward and annoying MLM guys. There are a lot of them out there.

The movie is full of small puns that keep the laughs coming through the whole movie. They really are their own little world. Check out this movie! It's worth it!

Very well done mockumentary.
dancerrosa16 July 2018
It's got that comedy much like "Modern Family" and "The Office". Extremely entertaining especially if you've done MLM. Well written characters and the way they are tied together was brilliant. Main actors are familiar from other movies. I enjoyed the mix between real interviews and the actors. It's funny! Hopefully, they make a part II, spoofing the MLMs of today. I'd totally watch it!
