‘Avatar’ Biggest Non-Summer Release for Fox

James Cameron’s recently opened Avatar may not have ousted I Am Legend as the biggest December weekend opener (Return of the King takes the cake for all-time highest grossing December release, but came out on a weekday), but it certainly did well in its first day.
The film’s release at 3,452 theaters saw an intake of $27 million, which is shy of the $30 million brought in by I Am Legend, but is the highest grossing release for a Twentieth Century Fox production released outside of summer. Ice Age: The Meltdown previously held the record, with first day earnings of $21.8 million
Avatar’s opening came one day short of being exactly twelve years after the release of Cameron’s blockbuster Titanic, and saw more than three times the earnings the 1997 megahit saw it its first day. For comparison, Titanic’s opening brought in only $8.7 million in its opening. Much of the

Football saved an otherwise sleepy holiday weekend for television, according to early Nielsen estimates. Fox's late-afternoon game boosted its prime-time lineup (The Simpsons was up 2 million viewers over last week, while Family Guy and American Dad were up 1.1 million). And Sunday Night Football won the night for NBC with its Pittsburgh-Baltimore matchup drawing 16.2 million viewers. As for the rest of the weekend, ABC dominated Saturday night with, yes, more football (averaging 6 million viewers), and Fox took a rare Friday victory with an airing of Ice Age 2: The Meltdown (4.8 million).
Here, a look at Sunday's lineup:

Along with the standard single disc edition, the animated film, originally presented in 3D, will be available in a three disc Blu-ray combo pack or the two disc "Scrat Pack."
Enhanced by special features, the movie picks up where the second film "Ice Age: The Meltdown" left off with the lovable prehistoric creatures expanding their herd. Mammoths Manny (voice of Ray Romano) and Ellie (Queen Latifah) are expecting a baby, leaving sabretooth tiger Diego (Denis Leary) and sloth Sid (John Leguizamo) feeling left out. 'Ice Age 3' Climbs to Lofty Foreign Milestone

On the foreign front, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs has officially become the third highest-grossing movie of all time. The animated comedy edged out Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone to rank behind Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Worldwide (which combines both foreign and domestic grosses), it currently stands at No. 18 on the all time chart, just shy of Finding Nemo, which it will soon surpass. The third Ice Age has made over $667 million thus far, accounting for a whopping 77 percent of its $862 million worldwide total. That's the greatest foreign ratio for an American blockbuster on record, exceeding such foreign favorites as the Harry Potter and The Da Vinci Code movies. Based on its domestic run, Dawn of the Dinosaurs may seem like an unlikely contender for any all time chart. Despite the ticket price boost of its 3D presentations, its domestic gross is under $195 million,

Weekend Report: 'Funny People' More Pauper Than King of Comedy

If this weekend's box office were a comedian, it might have been heckled off the stage, mostly for its dullness. Between the main new release, Funny People, which always had sketchy prospects despite high profile talent, and the cumulative effect of a relatively soft July slate, overall business amounted to $127.6 million, which was off 17 percent from the same weekend last year and low for the time of the year. What's more, the summer as a whole became on par with last summer through the same point, dwindling from the lead it had racked up in May and June. Headlining the weak weekend, Funny People drew $22.7 million on approximately 4,100 screens at 3,007 sites, which was significantly less than director Judd Apatow's previous picture, Knocked Up, and even behind his first, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, in terms of attendance. By lead actor Adam Sandler's standards, the debut was poor for one of his comedies,

Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax Coming to Theaters

Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment are joining forces to turn the Dr. Seuss book The Lorax into a 3-D CG animated feature, report the trades. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas and The Cat in the Hat previously received live-action big screen treatment, while the recent Horton Hears a Who! went the animated route.
Dr. Seuss' The Lorax will be co-directed by Chris Renaud and Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio, with Paul & Daurio writing the script. Renaud, who started out as a storyboard artist on Ice Age: The Meltdown and Robots, is making his feature directorial debut with the Steve Carrell animated flick Despicable Me.
Paul & Daurio penned the screenplay for Me and also scripted Bubble Boy, The Santa Clause 2, College Road Trip and the aforementioned Horton Hears a Who!.
Though published in 1971, The Lorax has a timely "green" theme. It is narrated by a greedy entrepreneur who, despite warnings from the tree-loving Lorax,

Though G-Force and The Ugly Truth opened well, it was another down weekend at the box office. Driven by less compelling new and recent releases, business as a whole was down from last year for the third weekend in a row. With around $149 million, the drop was 18 percent from the $181 million of the same timeframe last year, when The Dark Knight was in its second session and Step Brothers debuted.
Following the playbook for the perennially popular talking animal sub-genre, G-Force scooted to an estimated $32.2 million on approximately 5,200 screens at 3,697 sites, grossing a bit more out-of-the-gate than Bolt, Beverly Hills Chihuahua and Cats & Dogs, though it was far from the next Alvin and the Chipmunks. In its marketing, the picture looked like it was stitched together from past like-minded movies, from the scatological and cutesy humor of Alvin and the Chipmunks to the gizmos of Cats & Dogs and others. Box office preview: 'Harry Potter' likely to hold off newcomers

It's going to take more than super-charged guinea pigs, a Katherine Heigl rom-com, or a freaky orphan to knock Harry Potter from its perch atop the box office. While G-Force, The Ugly Truth, and The Orphan will make a valiant effort trying, Harry Potter's spell is just too strong. Check out my predictions below.
1. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: $31 million
2007's Harry Potter and Order of the Phoenix fell 58 percent its second weekend after opening to $77 million its opening frame. This Potter should fall in the same range -- and perhaps even steeper -- considering it's already grossed $177 million in just seven days of release.
2. G-Force: $25 million
Yes, it's 3-D. Yes, it's from uber-producer Jerry Bruckheimer. But it's about guinea pigs, for goodness sake, which automatically limits the audience to the Beverly Hills Chihuahua-viewing set, even if they are trained by the government. Chihuahua opened last February to $29 million.

The remarkably popular Harry Potter franchise kept the cauldrons churning with the release of its sixth installment, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which drew $77.8 million on approximately 9,600 screens at 4,325 locations over the weekend. Compared to last year, though, when The Dark Knight blazed into the record books, overall weekend business was down a sharp 38 percent, and attendance was a bit soft versus the more normal weekends of years past, due in part to Harry Potter being the sole new nationwide release. In its first five days, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince pulled in $158 million, surpassing predecessor Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix's $139.7 million as the franchise's highest-grossing five-day start and ranking sixth among all movies. The bulk of Half-Blood Prince's lead over Order of the Phoenix came from its $58.2 million opening day, while Thursday through Saturday were slightly ahead and Sunday was a bit behind Order of the Phoenix.

Despicable Me Trailer Starring Steve Carell

Here's kind of a strange trailer for a new animated film from Universal-based CG studio Illumination Entertainment. Called Despicable Me, the story apparently revolves around a criminal mastermind named Groo who has been stealing world landmarks and now also plans to steal the moon. I say the trailer is a bit strange because we never really see the main character, and we only see his silhouette and hear his voice (provided by Steve Carell). The trailer is more of a short film setting up the disappearance of the monuments, but I have a feeling it's only going to confuse audiences.
Between the three of them, directors Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud and Sergio Pablos have only directed a couple of animated shorts. Renaud was the storyboard artist on Ice Age: The Meltdown and Robots though, so I guess that means something... maybe? At any rate, the voice cast is the one thing that interests me,

Weekend Report: 'Bruno' Not as Brawny as 'Borat'

Bruno strutted to the top of the box office but wasn't quite in vogue, leading to a relatively slow July session. Overall, the weekend was the least attended for the timeframe in 17 years and down five percent from last year.
Striking approximately 3,400 screens at 2,756 venues, Bruno donned a solid $30.6 million, which was less than I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, another "gay panic" comedy from July 2007. Despite a higher-grossing debut, Bruno didn't make a statement like Borat, Sacha Baron Cohen's previous mockumentary. That picture opened to $26.5 million at only 837 theaters, and then made $28.3 million in its second weekend, when it expanded to 2,566 theaters, culminating in a $128.5 million final tally.
Breaking the weekend gross down, Bruno had one of the steepest Friday-to-Saturday drops on record, slipping 39 percent from $14.4 million on Friday to $8.8 million on Saturday. For the most part, movies with such Saturday slides do not hold up well in the long run,
