U.S. TV Shows Deny Madonna Threats

15 July 2008 5:08 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Producers of two of America's leading TV shows have denied rumours they received threats from Madonna's representative after booking her brother Christopher Ciccone as a guest.

Ciccone was reportedly due to appear on The Insider and Entertainment Tonight to publicise his tell-all book about life with the superstar, but the interviews were said to have been cancelled at the last minute.

And rumours have circulated that bosses at the TV station received a call from Madonna's representative, Liz Rosenberg, threatening to cut their access to the Holiday hitmaker if they went ahead with the Ciccone interviews.

But a spokesperson for both programmes has now strongly denied that anyone was contacted by Rosenberg in relation to the scrapped on-air chats.

The representative tells the New York Post gossip column PageSix, "That's not us."

O'Brien Officially Dropped As The Insider Anchor

9 June 2008 10:33 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Pat O'Brien, the co-host of The Insider, whose frequent bouts with alcoholism has made him the kind of celebrity that the show itself covers nightly, has been demoted to a Los Angeles-based correspondent, with Lara Spencer taking over officially as the show's sole anchor, CBS announced Friday. O'Brien returned to rehab last February. Spencer, who has co-anchored The Insider from New York, will move to California as part of a longterm pact, executive producer Linda Bell Blue said in a statement. Blue included her announcement of the anchor change in a statement announcing the conversion of the show's production facilities to high definition. "We are once again making history by being the first entertainment newsmagazines to move into HD. Lara is essential to the exciting future of the show," Bell Blue said.

Gossip Shows Yank Ledger Video

31 January 2008 | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

The syndicated gossip show Entertainment Tonight paid $200,000 for an amateur videotape of the late Heath Ledger talking about his former drug use but shelved the tape "under pressure from film insiders," the New York Daily News reported today (Thursday). The newspaper posted frames from the tape, bearing the "E.T." logo, on its website. According to the report, the tape was taken by an unknown cameraman following the SAG Awards ceremonies on Jan. 29, 2006 at a party at the Chateau Marmont hotel in West Hollywood, where an unidentified man is seen snorting cocaine from a coffee table in front of Ledger. "I shouldn't be here at all," Ledger remarks on the tape. "I used to smoke five joints a day for 20 years." (He was 26 at the time the video was shot.) The Daily News said that the tape was originally obtained by Australian TV network Channel 9, which aired it tonight (Thursday) and posted it on its website. The Channel 9 reporter said that another syndicated U.S. show, The Insider, had also planned to broadcast the video but pulled it at the last moment. U.S. gossip commentator Sam Rubin, appearing in the Channel 9 report, maintained that the public relations agency that represented Ledger had threatened to refuse to provide other celebrity clients for the two shows in the future if they went ahead with plans to air the video.

Britney Remains Ratings Winner for Tabloid TV

17 January 2008 | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

The latest tribulations of Britney Spears fired up the ratings of the syndicated entertainment magazines last week but proved to be disastrous for Dr. Phil McGraw. According to Broadcasting & Cable, Entertainment Tonight saw its ratings soar a whopping 26 percent during the week ending January 6 -- with much of the rise attributed to its Friday, Jan. 4 coverage of Spears's enforced hospitalization, when ratings climbed 34 percent over the previous Friday. Ratings for Extra leaped 20 percent. Inside Edition saw its ratings climb 15 percent from the previous week, while Access Hollywood's numbers were up 14 percent, and Tje Insider, 11 percent. Meanwhile, the New York Daily News reported that, despite canceling his planned "intervention" show involving the pop star, bookers for Dr. Phil have been having difficulty lining up celebrity guests to appear on his 1,000th show. One source told the newspaper, "Nobody wants to go near it" since the Spears episode. Although the newspaper also claimed that Dr. Phil's popularity has also plummeted, the latest ratings indicated that he remained second only to Oprah Winfrey as the highest-rated daytime talk-show host, averaging a 4.0 rating to Winfrey's 4.7.
