Bad werewolf movies: Tomb of the Werewolf
Captain_Couth9 May 2005
Tomb of the Werewolf (2003) is a terrible movie. But it has some spots that keep it from receiving a place in the dust-bin. Another straight-to-video flick from Fred Olen Ray who's aided and abetted by ancient Iberian lycanthrope Paul Naschy (Jacinto Molina). A boring rehash of the old werewolf genre except it's filled with some sleaze and girl-on-girl action. But the scenes are either boring or too tame to be of interest. Over the years some filmmakers improve but unfortunately F.O.R. has still remained a z-grade director. But he's a genius compared to clowns such as David De Coteau and his fifty other alias.

Not recommended unless you want to watch tame R-rated soft-core porn, uninspired directing, bad acting, inane writing and cheesy special effects.

Tomb of the Werewolf
Scarecrow-8814 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Elizabeth Bathory(Michelle Bauer, REALLY getting into the role)agrees to sacrifice female victims..and, most importantly, bathe in their blood..to her Lord Lucifer in exchange for eternal beauty and youth. A broke, yet brimming with charm, final descendant of the cursed Daninsky line, Richard(Olen Ray alum, Jay Richardson)asks for the face, Melanie(Danielle Petty)and producer Tony(Leland Jay)of the low-rent television program, Current Mysteries, to host a show at his family's European home of the infamous late Waldemar Daninsky(Paul Naschy, merely in it for a little bit to get paid, but one can see he at least cares). Waldemar was on the verge of losing his beloved Eleanor(Stephanie Bentley)to the black plague when Ebath posed an offer he doesn't refuse..in exchange for Eleanor's life, he sells his soul to Lucifer's angel, yet in return is cursed with lycanthropy. It is written he attacked, and killed, Eleanor when under the full moon curse. Imprisoned and killed with a silver cross embedded in his heart, Ebath will hypnotically force Richard to release Waldemar from his slumber, removing the large dagger as the werewolf emerges from his crypt to kill again. During the day we see a weary Waldemar looking on in sadness from the bushes and over cornered walls of his estate and the crew of Current Mysteries remain around the manor conducting their affairs. What Richard was seeking is supposed treasure, but this was merely a ruse by Ebath for unleashing Waldemar once again as anyone who has the misfortune of standing in the path of the werewolf will be torn into. Meanwhile, aging skin will force Ebath to chose another victim of the Current Mysteries crew for their blood.

Well, to be honest, this is a sex movie without the special ingredient one watches it for. In actuality the film is smut masquerading as a horror film..perhaps, that's why the sex scenes are removed. The distributer perhaps wanted this film to be marketed as a legitimate werewolf horror flick..to it's credit there is some werewolf carnage. Some torn throats as flesh is ripped away as the werewolf munches away quite rabidly. Bauer really just let's it hang out as E Bathory just bathing in the red stuff and slurping away. In the version I watched, there's ample nudity(mostly breasts)and the lesbian sequences consist of groping and kissing. The cast is equipped with porn stars so you ought to know where this film's head is mostly at..but, without the sex, the film really only consists of bad actors and uninspired dialogue. I rented it as a Paul Naschy/werewolf completest, but one shouldn't go into this thing expecting a massive amount of thrills. At least if the sex had remained, a certain crowd could've had that aspect for pleasure. As is, the film is cheaply made trying to have us believe the setting is in Europe with poor effects. For Fred Olen Ray fans only. Danielle Petty is quite striking as the raven-haired Melanie..both in and out of clothes.

Well, it has Naschy
BandSAboutMovies10 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Richard Daninsky (Jay Richardson) is the latest in the line of the Daninsky family, a bloodline that also includes noted werewolf Waldemar (Paul Naschy). He's just inherited a castle filled with hidden treasure, so he brings a reality show into the home and you guessed it, Elizabeth Bathory (Michele Bauer!) shows up to pull the silver dagger out of Waldemar's body just in time for him to be unleashed on a bevy of sex scene having individuals - and couples - like Evan Stone, Monique Alexander, Beverly Lynn, Jacy Andrews, Stephanie Bentley and Danielle Petty.

Directed and written by Fred Olen Ray, this was made at the same time as Countess Dracula's Orgy of Blood, also shot in America and starring Naschy.

Re-released as The Unliving, this was shot by Gary Graver. And come on, if you have to make a softcore horror movie and could get Naschy in it, wouldn't you? But still, it's a Cinemax-style sex movie with long scenes with no genitals and people dry humping while Paul Naschy is in full makeup, just waiting to go on and do his werewolf thing. His wife was in the hospital sick in America while they made this, he barely spoke the language and he had to be confronted by all this U. S. A. Softcore and how disconcerting is that? And it's his last werewolf movie? I mean, that's either jubilant that he went out in a movie with so much balling or sad and it's late on a Saturday and I've taken too many edibles so I think it makes me wistful.

I am all for Michelle Bauer being Bathory and doing a Black Sabbath opening. More of that.

B-Movie Fun - Michelle Bauer steals it.
capkronos20 February 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Elizabeth Bathory (Michelle Bauer) sells her soul to Satan for eternal youth and (as most of us know) must bathe in the blood of young women (not just virgins, as you will later see!) to retain her youth. She is also responsible for periodically sending her dark lord Lucifer some damned souls by making human sacrifices. Somewhere along the years she crosses paths with Waldemar Daninsky (Paul Naschy), a nobleman in love with Lady Eleanor Daninsky (Stephanie Bentley). When the black plague ravages Eleanor, Elizabeth strikes a deal with Waldemar to return her to life. She does, but then Waldemar is transformed into a werewolf, kills the newly-revived Eleanor and is captured by townspeople who drive a silver cross through his chest. He's then laid to rest in a hidden crypt in the Daninsky family castle and forgotten. (By the way, the time and place of these events are never given.) Flashing ahead to today, descendant Richard Daninsky (Jay Richardson) learns he has just inherited a huge castle reputed to have a treasure hidden somewhere inside. He travels to Europe with the crew from the television series "Current Mysteries" in tow. Amongst the group are arrogant TV reporter Melanie Charles (Kennedy Johnston), her producer boyfriend Tony (Leland Jay), script supervisor Leslie (Beverly Lynne), beefcake cameraman Steve (Frankie C. Cullen) and make-up artist Christie (Jacy Andrews). The group also hire psychic Amanda Collins (Stephanie Bentley), who is a dead-ringer for the long- dead Eleanor because she is actually a ghost. And wouldn't you know it, there in the castle alive and well-preserved is Elizabeth, who is posing as the caretaker and housekeeper, but is naturally up to other devious things.

Elizabeth leads Richard down into the dungeon/crypt and tricks him into removing the cross from the corpse of Waldemar. Waldemar returns to life, kills Richard, gets outside and starts biting chunks out of villagers. Meanwhile, the TV crew goof off and get off in assorted combinations. The sex scenes for the video release (including the expected girl-girl encounter) cut to black before they get too racy, suggesting there may be an unrated version out there somewhere. If one does indeed exist, it will probably end up on Cinemax at 3 a.m.; this film is fun and perfect for late-night trash-film fanatics. Director Fred Olen Ray does an OK good job with the return of Naschy's famous Spanish horror character. He's added a little fog, a little ambiance, a little blood and some romanticism to this tale in intentional reverence to the El Hombre Lobo movies of the 1970s. He also stuck pretty closely with the original werewolf design and special effects. The only major difference is that the cheesy time-lapse werewolf transformations of yesteryear have been replaced by the cheesy morphing werewolf transformations of today. The film is nowhere near as atmospheric as the original Spanish productions, but there's plenty of nudity/sex and even a decent amount of blood to keep B movie fans mildly entertained.

The period details (aside from the castle and some costumes) are not convincing in the least and neither are the performances from most of the younger cast (Beverly Lynne and Jacy Andrews excluded), but having three veterans in the pivotal roles makes a big difference here. Jay Richardson dies pretty early on, but he's an-always reliable character actor and does just fine here. It's great to see Paul Naschy in an American movie and playing Waldemar again. He has a few English-language lines with his thick Spanish accent, but spends most of the film in make-up or standing off in the background watching the action from afar. But the real star of this one is Michelle Bauer, who is menacing, sexy, sardonic, wickedly funny and delivers her dialog with great camp relish. Pay careful attention to her facial expressions. She never just stands around waiting to say her line; she's always active in what's going on while others around here often seem to be drifting off. It is one of her best performances and largest roles... and none too soon! The 44-year-old (who seems to be growing old gracefully with no signs of reconstruction or Botox face-freeze) is surrounded here by girls who are young, attractive and refreshingly devoid of silicone. Never mind that, Michelle steals the spotlight away from all of them.

Bauer and Breasts
Dr. Gore2 March 2005
Warning: Spoilers
*SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT*

"Tomb of the Werewolf" is about breasts. Naked female breasts. It is not about a Tomb or a Werewolf. There is a wolf man running around but he's just filler until the next breast scene. He just liked to bite into people's necks and then run off. He couldn't run away too fast or else his wolf man beard would have flown off.

So a bunch of hunky men and hot women head to an old castle to look for breasts. It doesn't take them long to find them. Beverly Lynne and some other babes take their shirts off with gleeful abandon. It must be the full moon. It brings out the animal in them. Michelle Bauer is the maid of the castle and keeps everyone zonked out on booze and boobies. She has a thing for hairy monster men. Many breasts must come out to play before the beast can be stopped.

Suffice to say, this is not a horror movie. However, I did enjoy this film simply because I am a die hard Michelle Bauer fan. Seeing the wolf man run around with his fake beard flopping in the wind almost made me die hard. But then again, seeing Michelle Bauer join the party and take her top off made me jump for joy. Her scene with the girl wearing the blindfold was the highlight of the movie.

So once again Michelle Bauer saves another B-movie from total destruction. If you're a Bauer fan, check it out. She's still got it.

Tomb Of The Werewolf Review
joshkclark4 January 2006
Tomb Of The Werewolf was more like a college porno film, within the first ten minute there is already a woman feeling up another girl, now that's not the bad part. The bad part was, is that the movie was terribly done, bad actors, not a bad plot but the way they made Paul Naschy become a werewolf was ridiculous. I mean come on, a silver cross can only kill the werewolf? He looked more like a guy who hadn't shaved in a while much less than a werewolf. But if you are a person who likes movies with a terrible plot, horrific actors, awful special effects and it has the makings of a bad college porn flick, then you will certainly love Tomb Of The Werewolf.

A sad farewell
Groverdox18 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
"Tomb of the Werewolf" is a lightweight, mostly uninteresting softcore movie that occasionally remembers it is supposed to be a horror flick.

It was apparently the last time Naschy played his Waldemar Daninsky character, and I wish the movie could have given him a better send off. He's barely in it, and only pops up to kill people here and there as the hombre lobo.

I really only watched it for Michelle Bauer, looking dead sexy in her forties. The problem is she plays a character suited for a horror movie, and this isn't one. Her ominous presence sticks out like a sore thumb among the completely forgettable, generically pretty softscore stalwarts that make up the rest of the cast.

It was made by Fred Olen Ray, and it's at least not as bad as his other movies.

Laughably bad... and then some!
wolfbeast22 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I had a suspicion that this was not going to be a blockbuster movie, so I prepared to watch at least a B-movie as entertainment. And sure enough, the special effects were indeed laughably bad, so much so even that I double-checked to make sure this was indeed produced in this millennium, and not some 20 years before it!

To sum it up, the movie is probably 50% badly acted soft-porn with the expected music scores you'd find in those movies, with lots of breasts showing, even before the title of the movie there is a long scene of woman to woman action. The other 50% is a very feeble attempt to make all of it fit in some kind of story about a werewolf, who looks like the wolf-man from the early half of the 20th century. The transformation scene cracked me up with how bad it was, as it was something anyone with a PC in their home could have made without knowing the first bit about video editing or CGI.

All in all, awful, just awful. Unless of course you don't care about the story of a movie and just want to see a lot of breasts.

Totally unwatchable.
Boba_Fett11384 November 2010
So far I have only seen 2 different Fred Olen Ray but I can already tell that he is absolutely one of the worst directors that is still working today. His movies are just so bad, that they are not even funny to watch.

I can stand the occasional low budget horror-attempt and can take them for what they are but this is just too much to take. It's an insanely bad movie, that you shouldn't even watch to see how bad it is. Just take my word for it and don't even think about ever watching this.

While watching this movie I even started noticing that I wasn't even paying attention to it, while I wasn't even doing anything else. It's just a completely uninteresting movie and I literally couldn't care about anything that was happening. I therefore also really can't tell what the story was about because I simply did not care. It's title might sound cool enough but really, this is not even a werewolf movie. If I have to classify this movie as anything, it would be as soft-core porn because it has a couple of lame attempts at nudity and sex sequences at it, that aren't even done well, not even from a soft-core porn perspective. Horror-wise there is absolutely nothing going on in this movie.

It's an incredibly cheap looking movie. It's one of those films that has a TV look all over and if this movie cost anything above $1,000 to make, I would be very surprised. No serious money on the sets, effects, make-up or costumes got ever spend. Even the sound can be all messed up at times, when the actors don't speak closely enough into the camera's.

The movie really doesn't flow well, which is due to its messy editing but also lacking directing. The movie also completely fails to feature some likable characters. All of the characters are basically extremely horrendous ones, that do absolutely nothing to make you like any of them. They do quite the opposite throughout this movie actually. I also really can't tell who was supposed to be the main character, or so to speak, 'hero' in this.

Needless to say that the acting is also real horrible in this. They couldn't spend any money on the movie its visuals, so they of course also couldn't spend any on some decent enough actors. Actually funny to see that I start recognizing some of these actors who keep popping up in these absolutely horrible- and often soft-core porn, flicks.

Do us all a favor and just give up, Fred Olen Ray. You even shouldn't be allowed to make movies in the first place with that sort of a name.

Porn VHS Companies Should Not Create Horror Movies!
AcousticMonster4 March 2007
WARNING! Do not be fooled by the fancy graphics on the DVD cover. It's a trap! Put this movie back on the shelf immediately! Proceed to the nearest bathroom, and wash your hands with a combination of gasoline and steel wool.

This steaming pile is nothing more than a porn producer's attempt at making a horror movie. Think of Tomb of the Werewolf as a porno with "actors" wearing Halloween masks bought from their local hardware store. This production company should be hanged with a latex werewolf dildo, toot sweet!

Note: I think there should be a federal law put into place. DVD covers should represent the actual content of their movies. The cover on this DVD is a case of pure fraud!

Campy and embarrassing
Leofwine_draca15 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
TOMB OF THE WEREWOLF is a campy and embarrassing werewolf flick made by Fred Olen Ray and one of his cheaper works. It's one of the many films that Paul Naschy made in the last decade of his life that tended to be done by his fans wanting to get more life out of the old horror star. Sadly this material is far beneath him and feels like a home movie more than anything. Naschy shows up in some brief flashbacks and gets to play Waldemar Daninsky once more, aided by a nifty CGI transformation scene here. His screen time extends to about 15 minutes in total. The rest of this is mere padding with annoying characters and the like. Ray is obsessed with showing as much female skin as possible and shoehorns plenty of gratuitous nude and sex scenes into the lame and loose story. Only bad movie lovers will enjoy it.

If you like breasts....
moviemanic0712 December 2004
A man who recently inherited a European castle with a rumored hidden treasure invites the buxom crew from a television supernatural show to help him find the treasure. I said buxom crew, because, I believe, that is the whole point of this film. After pre-title sequence where our buxom villainies offers a buxom victim to a strangely-annoyed Lucifer, who appears via a bad special effect, we skip ahead a couple hundred years to the present day where the buxom host of the television show starts getting naked on the sofa with her producer boyfriend, and then…. Wait a minute. Was I hitting on a subtle leitmotif? I decided to hit pause button and went to the trusty IMDb to see whether I was watching a horror movie or soft core porn. I was right to suspect the latter. It seems director Fred Olen Ray has done quite a bit of soft core. Oh well. Nothing wrong with that, unless you were hoping to see a horror movie and there wasn't any thing scary here unless you have an unnatural fear of breasts. Ray, however, is a true professional and he moves things along at a brisk pace, so it really doesn't matter too much if the level of acting fails to rise above that of soft core porn or if the 'action' music theme sounds like a refugee from a mid-90's video game. No thrills or scares here, but if you like breasts….

Not As Bad If You Know What You're Getting
Michael_Elliott15 January 2010
Tomb of the Werewolf (2004)

** (out of 4)

Paul Naschy made his twelfth and final appearance as Waldemar Daninsky in this American production that was quickly thrown together when the Spanish legend came to the States for a quick visit. The film centers on the Daninsky Castle where there's a hidden treasure somewhere. The last relative of Waldemar invites a reality show there to try and find it but an evil servant (Michelle Bauer) decides to bring Waldemar, the werewolf, back to life. Okay, if you're expecting the Waldemar of two decades ago then you're going to be disappointed but at the same time I think this film offers enough for fans of Naschy who aren't going to be offended by what the movie is. There's no question that this film doesn't work but I think some of being overly harsh on it because it doesn't look, feel or smell like the films Naschy was making earlier in his career. This film contains a lot of nudity, various sex scenes and a weak story but at the same time I think the werewolf side of things gets plenty of attention and we get to see Naschy, in full make up, attacking more people here than in any of the other films that this character appears in. The transformation scenes, done through cheap CGI, are extremely bad so thankfully we only have to see them a couple times whereas the wolf just appears in the other scenes. I think Naschy is good at his old tricks of howling, jumping out and biting folks but the screenplay never gives him any dialogue with the make up. I understand how this might upset fans but again, we have to remember how quickly this thing was thrown together. I found the rest of the cast to be entertaining even if they weren't giving the greatest performances out there. Bauer is fine as the vamp with Stephanie Bentley, Danielle Petty and Jacy Andrews turning in fun characters as well. There's plenty of bloody attacks to keep horror fans entertained and plenty of nudity for the teenage boy in all of us. Ray hasn't created any masterpiece or anything ground breaking but I think fans of Naschy should at least check it out to see the man in his most famous role one last time.

This film brings one very good question to mind...
Hypnotica19 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
... and that question is... DOES *NO ONE* MAKE GOOD WEREWOLF MOVIES ANYMORE?! This movie features an incredibly untalented cast, very cheesy and outdated special effects and just plain bad writing.

First problem, too much sex and nudity. Now some, especially men, might argue with that opinion, but that fact is I wanted to see a movie about werewolves. If I'd wanted to see that many breasts exposed, I could have just rented a porno. Seriously, this was one step above a snuff film. (If you don't know what that is, I am *not* going to be the one to explain it.)

Now, the special effects. I get that this was very low budget production, and so was not expecting anything state-of-the-art. That would have been dumb. But I have literally seen better special effects made by teenagers on their home computers. It was sad.

Most of the actors, particularly the women, were more likely cast for their willingness to get naked and get it on with the other female cast members than any acting skills they might possess. (Which are very few.)

Now, if the script had at least been well written, some of the other stuff could have been forgiven. This was not the case. And the real hell of it is that they started out with a fairly good plot line. Bringing Elizabeth Bathory into the mix, for example, was a good idea and one that I have not often seen used. The reincarnation factor wasn't exactly original, but could have worked out quite well. There is also a tragic back story for the werewolf, in which he basically trades his humanity to Bathory in exchange for saving his beloved wife from the plague. Ironically, once his wife begins to heal, he ends up killing her while in werewolf form. The writer/director was, unfortunately, apparently just not talented enough to build on that plot very well. Maybe he was too distracted by all the pointless lesbian sex he just had to put in.

In all, this movie doesn't rank up in the category of "Worth at least one watch." Heck, it doesn't even rank high enough to be put in the "So bad, it's funny" category. This movie is part of the bottom dwelling "There ain't nothing funny about a movie *this* bad" category, where it is kept company by the likes of "El Chpacabra" and "Miner's Massacre." Now, I admit, no one made me watch this, er, film. (And I use the term "film" very loosely.) That's not to say that I'm not still a bit disgruntled by the fact that I shelled out about four bucks to rent this thing. But I admit that was my own folly. Having made that horrible mistake, I now warn any who might be reading this not to make the same mistake. To say that this... film is a waste of both time and money would be an understatement. If you're like me and want to see a good werewolf movie, go with a classic, like "The Wolfman" and the sequels starring Lon Chaney Jr. (At least they have the excuse of the time period for the special effects and they're well written enough.) If you want something a bit more modern, I'm sorry to say that you're limited to the 80's and early 90's. To my knowledge there have been no good werewolf movies made since then. Oh, there have been a few good ones that feature werewolves, but none exclusively about werewolves.

I still have hope that someday, someone out there in Hollywood will make a worthy werewolf film once more, but I'm not holding my breath.
