Before he became one of Shaw Brothers’ foremost fight choreographers, Lau Kar Leung used to work as an extra besides choreographing the old black and white Wong Fei Hung series. Together with fellow choreographer Tang Chia, he would spend many years working for director Chang Cheh until they had a fallout while doing “Marco Polo”. So it was only natural that he would eventually evolve into a director during the early 70s when the martial arts films were in full swing. Furthermore, after Shaw Brothers Studio stopped making films, he would continue to choreograph, direct and even act in films like “Drunken Master II” with Jackie Chan and Tsui Hark’s “Seven Swords” in 2005.

With his presence in John Wick: Chapter 4, Donnie Yen is finally getting the English-language, international showcase he’s always deserved. Yen is a huge star in his motherland of China and is about to become a very bright draw for international audiences, finding himself new fans every time he’s seen in an American film. With this new one, he should no longer be “oh I know that guy from somewhere” and be quite well known as the badass that he is. To you get to know his work, here are ten of the best Donnie Yen movies (in no particular order):
Dragon (aka Wu Xia) (2011)
A big part of Yen’s career has been filled with period pieces in which martial arts have an important place (the Wuxia genre). Dragon is no different. Here, Yen plays a family man who is hiding a dark past, when this past catches up with him,...

Divergent screenwriter Evan Daugherty has penned a new adventure comic titled Seven Swords.
From independent publisher AfterShock Comics (Babyteeth, Witch Hammer), Seven Swords follows jaded muskateer D’Artagan who is drawn into final conflict with Cardinal Richelieu, and recruits the help of Don Juan, Captain Blood and Cyrano de Bergerac to defeat a looming enemy.
“My greatest passion as a screenwriter is telling old stories in new ways,” Daugherty tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s what I tried to do with Snow White and the Huntsman: take an iconic fairy tale and find some new way into it, updating and revising it for ...

“The 36th Chamber Of Shaolin” is a 1978 Kung Fu action film, mixing up a melting pot of action, politics, Buddhism, comedy, high drama and lots of cool moves. This is a film for men by men filled with men! The only female character is one of the students at Mr Ho’s college, who pops up occasionally, but atypically in this historical setting, a woman gaining an education! Apart from this one brave participant for femininity, this is a man-tastic film!

Encouraged by the success of Tsui Hark's Seven Swords and the warm reception to its coming kung fu blockbuster Dragon Tiger Gate, Mandarin Films will be concentrating its efforts mainly on actioners in the coming year. First in the pipeline is an unnamed contemporary crime actioner that will reunite Dragon Tiger Gate director Wilson Yip and action director and star Donnie Yen. Budget projections are awaiting cast confirmation but Mandarin Films chairman Raymond Wong estimates that it will be within the $6 million to $7 million range. "The market now seems to be either going for actioners or art house films and actioners are the more bankable. We've seen that with Seven Swords and Dragon Tiger Gate," said Wong, adding that the company plans "one or two" such productions in the coming year.

HONG KONG -- Fake DVDs touted as copies of Mandarin Films' $10 million-dollar comic book adaptation Dragon Tiger Gate have been found circulating in the southern mainland Chinese province of Guangdong. The videos are of a mystery action film called Shanghai Bund -- Dragon, Tiger, Leopard starring an actor named Lam Wai, but the DVD cover features promotional pictures of Dragon Tiger Gate, which stars actor and choreographer Donnie Yen (Hero, Seven Swords) and Shawn Yue (Infernal Affairs 2). "We watched the film and found it a completely different film. Essentially that is fraud because these two stars aren't in the movie at all," Mandarin Films chairman Raymond Wong said. "We don't rule out taking legal action."...

VENICE, Italy -- The opening ceremony of the 62nd Venice International Film Festival kicked off right on time Wednesday, underlining organizers' efforts to eradicate the delays that hampered last year's edition. Despite an unprecedented security operation, attendees were funneled smoothly along a red carpet thin on star power, with Ang Lee and John Woo the only major Hollywood names on show amid a full compliment of Italian industryites. Chinese director Tsui Hark was on hand with principal cast for the world premiere of his martial arts action film Seven Swords. Having faced criticism for putting together another Hollywood-heavy lineup to the detriment of European cinema, festival director Marco Muller said it was time to let the movies do the talking. "Finally you all will be exposed to this year's program. Finally we get to start talking about the films," he told the audience in a ceremony broadcast live by RAI Sat.
