Two-part extravaganzas have always been huge gambles for their creative teams. Hollywood is no stranger to shooting back-to-back sequels, from “The Matrix” to “The Hobbit” to Netflix's recent “Rebel Moon” saga, and Asian cinema has followed a similar path. John Woo split his expansive Han Dynasty battle epic “Red Cliff” in two for much of its worldwide distribution, while Bollywood's “Gangs of Wasseypur”(with its initial 319 minute runtime) has seen many iterations, first as two films, then as eight much shorter episodes for its Netflix distribution. In all of these cases, there is a gravitas that comes with the filmmaker's vision, bursting with ideas and flourishes that cannot be contained in the average one-off cinema experience. Yet with that comes a crucial hope for the goodwill of the audience, that they're willing to come back, buy another ticket and sit back down to see the conclusion of the story.

Silent Night Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Joel Kinnaman, Kid Cudi, Harold Torres, and Catalina Sandino Moreno

Silent Night Movie Review(Photo Credit –IMDb)
What’s Good: It is fantastic to see John Woo back doing films in the West. His experience in making action scenes still shows under all the gimmicks.
What’s Bad: The movie relies too much on a strange narrative gimmick that only hinders its enjoyment and makes the entire experience quite strange and boring.
Loo Break: Sadly, there are several. The movie’s gimmick makes certain scenes feel completely unnecessary.
Watch or Not?: There are better John Woo films out there to watch. Sadly, Silent Night doesn’t make the cut as an easy recommendation.

Plot: After his son is killed in a drive-by shooting, a grieving father (Joel Kinnaman) spends a year training himself to be an unstoppable killer so that he can take yuletide vengeance on the men responsible.
Review: Silent Night marks John Woo’s first American movie since 2003’s Paycheck, a now-forgotten sci-fi action film that starred Ben Affleck. Since then, he’s focused on the Chinese market, making the wildly successful two-part Red Cliff and the less successful romantic epic The Crossing. He also dipped his toe back into the heroic bloodshed genre he made famous with 2017’s Manhunt, which, despite some virtuoso action, played more like one of his big-budget American movies than his old-school Hong Kong ones.
In that vein, Silent Night is a return to an older-fashioned kind of John Woo film. Sporting a thriftier budget and an agreeably simple concept, Woo has the opportunity here to...

Action director legend John Woo is returning to cinemas with his new film Silent Night, and has something to say about the popularity and dominance of superhero films.
Asked about superhero movies in an interview with The New Yorker, Woo replied, “I’ve never liked watching movies with big special effects, or anything based on comic books. I prefer Martin Scorsese’s movies, that kind of cinema. I can’t wait to watch Killers of the Flower Moon. I like old-fashioned movies, you know? Real cinema. There aren’t many movies like that lately.”
Asked to name a recent action movie he liked, Woo picked writer Taylor Sheridan’s 2016 neo-Western Hell or High Water, which was directed by David Mackenzie.
Scorsese, of course, helped kick off the whole “real movies vs. superhero movies” debate back in 2019, when he told Empire, “I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema.

John Woo is perhaps the greatest action director of all time. No one can shoot action as kinetically as him, and his style paved the way for everyone from Sam Raimi to The Wachowskis to Chad Stahelski, whose John Wick movies are a love letter to the movies Woo made with Chow Yun-Fat. With his comeback movie Silent Night getting good buzz and hitting theatres on December 1st, John Woo recently sat down with The New Yorker for an extensive, wide-ranging interview about his life and career.
Of course, the magazine couldn’t help but ask Woo for his thoughts on superhero movies, with the legendary director coming down firmly on team Scorsese, who’s been outspoken about his dislike of the genre. “I’ve never liked watching movies with big special effects or anything based on comic books. John Woo is back.
The filmmaker behind such seminal action classics as “The Killer,” “Hard Boiled” and “Face/Off” is back with “Silent Night,” which stars Joel Kinnaman as a man who vows revenge after he is badly wounded and his son is killed on Christmas Eve. Watch the trailer above but be warned: it’s not for the faint of heart.
In the film, Kinnaman plays a man who goes after the murderers who destroyed his family. One of the most memorable shots in the trailer is when he writes “Kill Them All” on his calendar. The title “Silent Night” refers not only to the classic Christmas carol, but also to the fact that Kinnaman’s character lost his ability to speak in the attack. Now he’s silent… but deadly. Scott Mescudi and Catalina Sandino Moreno also star.
“Silent Night,” marks Woo’s first American movie in 20 years. His last U.

“America’s Got Talent” continued the live shows of its 18th season on September 12 with the fourth round of performances in the “Qualifiers.” On Tuesday night’s show, 11 acts performed for America’s vote and only two of them will advance to “The Finals” when the results are delivered by Terry Crews on Wednesday night. Before that happens, we can reveal that Your two favorite acts of the night were Japanese dance troupe Chibi Unity and Filipino singer Roland Abante, as voted on by viewers in Gold Derby’s overnight poll.
Chibi Unity was one of the last acts to audition for the judges in the first round and by the time of their performance all of the Golden Buzzers had been doled out. The judges put their heads together though and awarded them a rare Group Golden Buzzer because they loved the act so much. In their second performance on Tuesday night,...

Japanese dance group Chibi Unity took the stage on Tuesday night during the fourth “America’s Got Talent” live performance show of Season 18. (Read our minute-by-minute live blog.) Once again, they blew the judges and audience away with their synchronized shadow movements and beyond-belief dance moves. Chibi Unity previously made a name for themselves by receiving the group Golden Buzzer in the audition round, and in the September 12 live show they took things up a level as they performed to the song “Renegades” by One Ok Rock. What did You think of Chibi Unity’s latest performance?

After a film career spanning more than three decades, production-costume-art designer Tim Yip has achieved plenty, including winning an Oscar and a BAFTA award. But he is only now launching his most uncompromising production, which he calls a “living film project,” and which he hopes will challenge the tradition of cinema.

With U.S. studio tentpoles dropping out of the theatrical calendar, Chinese blockbusters may find a rare opportunity to gain some traction abroad. At least that’s what London-based distributor Trinity CineAsia is betting on.

Disney has been killing it with live-action remakes of their beloved animated movie catalog. While the upcoming Mulan might look like yet another relatively straight adaptation of a previous animated film, it’s not quite the same. Mulan, in 1998 and now, is based on an ancient Chinese legend. Not a fairy tale. Her story was commonly known across Asia long before Disney’s animated feature, and it’s that story (as much as the animated feature) that makes up the inspiration for the new film.
When it was announced that the new live-action film would not include the songs or her mini-dragon sidekick Mushu, fans of the “original” were disappointed. But Disney is hoping for an international blockbuster, especially in that lucrative Chinese film market, and many Asian fans were relieved to hear of the planned changes. In China, Disney’s first Mulan feature flopped because audiences saw it as...

The 1998 animated Disney’s Mulan introduced many in Western audiences to the legend of a young Chinese woman who disguised herself as a man to fight against an invading army. But the legend of Mulan had been around a lot longer—the first transcription of the story appears in the sixth century, and the earliest film version appeared in 1927. If you just can’t get enough of Mulan, check out these other versions of her story.
The Ballad of Mulan (1998)
While this picture book is geared at a young audience, it’s notable because it includes the text of one of the early poem versions in the untranslated Chinese, alongside a prose translation by author-illustrator Song Nan Zhang. It also came out the same year as Disney’s animated feature, which means young readers could have picked it up around the same time they saw the film on the big screen.

When one thinks of Mongolian cinema, one name immediately springs to mind: Batdorjin Baasanjav, best known for his portrayal of Genghis Khan in the 2004 Chinese-Mongolian TV drama of the same name, as Khan’s father Yesugei Baghatur in Sergei Bodrov’s 2007 biopic ‘Mongol’, and as Guan Yu in John Woo’s Three Kingdom’s era epic from 2008 ‘Red Cliff’. A descendent of Khan himself through his second son Chagatai, the word legendary seems all-too befitting for his very embodiment of his roles, delivering a wholly believable yet captivating performance time and time again. On paper then, it would seem to be the perfect casting choice for Tsahir, leader of one of Khan’s ten-men military units (or aravt) in Jolbayar and Shagdarsuren’s wonderfully shot film retelling this particular legend. Baasanjav aside, does ‘Legend of the Ten’ hold up in the emergence of Mongolian film-making? Short answer: yes, it does.

Prominent Chinese actress Zhao Wei (aka Vicki Zhao) has been banned for five years from holding senior positions in any listed company in China. The ruling was made by the Shanghai Stock Exchange on Tuesday.
The punishment relates to the failed 2016 takeover bid announced by Tibet Longwei, a company controlled by Zhao and her husband, Huang Youlong, for 29% of Zhejiang Wanija. The pair were found to have “disrupted market order” and to have benefited from a “celebrity effect” when they announced their bid, but did not have the financial resources to go through with it.
The China Securities Regulatory Commission had previously punished the pair with a five-year ban from trading on the Shanghai market and a $170,000 (RMB1.2 million) fine for the same offense. The latest, additional penalty reflects their release of false information during the bid.

As China is set to take over North America to become the single largest film market within the next years, more attention will/should be paid to its formidable and ever-expanding supply of home-grown talents. With the world premiere of his debut feature The Enigma of Arrival in Busan, the spotlight is on writer/director Song Wen, best known for founding the Xining First International Film Festival which, for its celebration of non-mainstream films and emerging filmmakers, is sometimes referred to as the Chinese Sundance.
This background is telling, for Song’s approach to this multiplex-friendly, nostalgia-laced dramatic thriller is not without arthouse aspirations. And while it ultimately doesn’t meet some of its loftier goals, it’s a surprise nonetheless to find such dreamy, strikingly sensitive tone in an essentially commercial picture.

It’s been 21 long years since John Woo made a good movie, and the legendary Hong Kong director appears to be well aware of that fact. “Manhunt,” Woo’s dumb but deliriously fun new film, is nothing if not a very conscious attempt to turn back the clock and revisit the wild kind of pistol opera that he helped to popularize in the late ’80s with classics like “The Killer” and “A Better Tomorrow.”
That being said, nothing about “Manhunt” comes across as safe or lazy. It doesn’t feel like Woo is just going back to the well because he could use a hit. On the contrary — and from the very beginning — his retreat seems like more of an artistic realignment than it does a surrender. This is the work of someone reconnecting with the things that made them fall in love with cinema in the first place. It...

Update: John Woo’s next film will be a remake of his own actioner The Killer, this time led by none other than Lupita Nyong’o in the assassin role originated by Chow Yun-fat, Deadline reports. Scripted by Eran Creevy, the Universal Pictures production will begin later this year in France and Germany. See the original story below.
While the summer will no doubt be met with disappointments in the action genre, the season will kick off with a new film from a master in the field, John Woo. Although it won’t be available on the big screen, his new thriller Manhunt will arrive worldwide on Netflix at the end of this week, and the company is finally now starting to promote it with the first trailer. Attempting to explore more traditional terrain, writer/director Xu Haofeng decides to explore one of his own novellas for his third directorial outing after the acclaimed efforts ‘The Sword Identity’ and ‘Judge Archer.’ Employing a more recent stage for his period-set martial arts drama, ‘The Final Master’ or released under the original title ‘Shi Fu,’ allows him to go for a realistic touch to the martial arts.

Something must have happened to John Woo in the last decade or so. It’s been well over a decade since his last full-blown, modern-day action film, having made the historical epics Red Cliff and The Crossing after leaving Hollywood, and Manhunt — his return to the genre that launched his career — feels like a new kind of John Woo. Now in his 70s, Woo has become fully self-aware, and in doing so seems to have challenged himself to create the most John Woo movie ever made. With Manhunt, he has indeed made the most John Woo movie possible, while also making a film that could just be described as “the most.” It’s a deliriously entertaining thrill ride from start to end, and sure to go down as one of the most enjoyable films of 2017.

It’s been 25 years since John Woo has directed one of his patented Hong Kong action flicks, but this year the so-called maestro is back with a new movie called Manhunt. After returning to China to helm a couple of two part period epics, Red Cliff and The Crossing, this movie finds him back in […]...

The first action-packed trailer for John Woo's new film Manhunt has been released and it looks like it's as John Woo as a John Woo action film can get. We haven't really seen a John Woo film in the states for awhile. That's because he's been keeping himself busy making big Chinese epics like Red Cliff and The Crossing. The last American movie that he made was Paycheck back in 2003.
Manhunt is also a Chinese film, but maybe we'll get to see it released in the states. The movie is a remake of the 1976 Japanese thriller Kimi yo Fundo no Kawa o Watare. The story follows a man who is framed for robbery and rape and he set out on a mission to clear his name.
The trailer itself is a little rough around the edges, but it's cool to see Woo making good old fashioned action movies again!

The 74th Venice International Film Festival (August 30 – September 9) has just announced the world premiere of John Woo’s action thriller Manhunt as part of its Out of Competition roster. The film is hotly anticipated as it marks the return of the Hong Kong director to the police thriller genre 25 years after his classic Hard Boiled, starring Chow Yun-fat, Tony Leung and Anthony Wong.
Set in Japan, Manhunt is the story of a Chinese man wrongly convicted for rape and multiple murders. He becomes the target of a manhunt by the local Japanese police, while he sets out himself to find the real killers.
The film has Chinese star Zhang Hanyu (The Great Wall, Operation Mekong) and Japanese actor-musician Masaharu Fukuyama (Suspect X, Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends) in the lead roles. The predominantly Japanese supporting cast includes Yasuaki Kurata, Jun Kunimura, Hiroyuki Ikeuchi, Nanami Sakuraba, Naoto Takenaka and Tao Okamoto.

After John Bernecker passed away Thursday night, TheWrap took a look back at other stuntmen who died on set. Kun Liu died in 2012 in an explosion on the set of “The Expendables 2” while filming in Bulgaria. His parents sued Millenium/Nu Image for wrongful death. Lu Yanqing died in 2008 in a fire on set caused by two boats crashing into one another while making the movie “Red Cliff” in China. Jose Marco died in 1969 while filming an underwater sequence in the film “Shark.” He was mauled to death by one of the sharks, which had been improperly sedated. Jack Tyree.

Subscription streaming services require digging to discover their full value. For example, while I’ve been prepping for IndieWire’s Best Action Films of the 21st Century (coming later this week), I was pleasantly surprised to find how many quality action films were available on Netflix — including works by a number of non-American auteurs. From martial arts to gangster shoot ’em ups to comedy-action films, here are eight highly original, well crafted, director-driven pieces of entertainment that could serve as a welcome alternative this summer when your local cineplex feels like a boring rerun.
“Shaolin Soccer” (2001)
Stephen Chow’s films (“Kung Fu Hustle”) are a wonderful and loony mix of comedy and action that have an infectious spirit. For this film the actor/writer/director adds a sports movie to the mix, which might sound bizarre, but once seeing it you’ll wonder why no one has made a martial arts soccer film before.

Dynasty Warriors: Unleashed has been a huge hit and with a new update available now the game is pretty hot right now.
Starting this article off I love the Dynasty Warriors franchise. Just button mashing fun against scores of enemies as you lay waste to them on levels of asskickery that can only be described as phenomenal. Putting this game on mobile was just a stroke of genius and it’s fun to play just kind of aimlessly for a while. Players can now download the expansion The Battle of Red Cliff: Part 1. You’ll be getting 10 new stages and new warriors Pang Tong and Han Dang to add to your characters as well. New dungeons will be playable through the Guild Dungeon which can opened by using guild points. Daily growth dungeons will be available as well with new objectives added daily.

With plans afoot for a live action take on Mulan, we look at the challenges facing Disney...
After more than 50 years of making animated features, Disney have now turned their attention to live-action adaptations of their famous films. After releases such as 101 Dalmatians (1996), Maleficent (2014) and Cinderella (2015), the studio's new creative direction has earned critical acclaim and financial success. It is also making its mark on the global box office, as the recently released Beauty And The Beast remake has earned small change in the region of $1.2bn and counting.
Among the upcoming remakes planned is Mulan, which already has fans of the 1998 Disney film debating about its faithfulness to the animated feature. That's especially so given reports about director Niki Caro's indecisiveness regarding the inclusion of songs such as Honour To Us All and I'll Make A Man Out Of You, as well as the...
