A strong and powerful story about being a man
Allan-All-In16 October 2005
I had the pleasure of seeing this movie with the director so I will explain it in his words: The movie is about a Judge who handles illegal and legal immigrants in Denmark, in a specific case he denies access to a supposedly terrorist. The terrorist attempts to commit suicide and the press blames the Judge. On top of all that his son who he hasn't seen for 15 years tries to contacts him, and the movie gives a strong and powerful perspective of a man who thought he had everything under control and realizes that in order to sort out his job and his personal life he has to force himself to open up to his family, the court and the public.

Far from realistic

Warning: Spoilers
Complete trash build on the idea, that some mass murdering terrorist that was denied asylum and in response set himself on fire, would actually trouble the average danish citizen, and the people who denied him. Absolutely preposterous. Everybody would clap their hands and yell "get the f out", obviously, regardless of the country.

Compelling thriller never lets you go.

Just viewed the compelling Danish film, DOMMEREN (The Judge) at the Cinequest Festival in San Jose, California (2006.) I would call it a "thriller," as I was immediately swept away and never let go by the riveting acting; scenes superbly shot and edited; and the spot-on film score. There is neither a false note nor boring moment in this whirlwind adventure, which also happens to pull off being a solid character study while driving to its heartfelt climax. Peter Gantzler, though obviously well-known in Denmark, could offer much to American films, should he ever choose to go that route. I remember him fondly in "Italian for Beginners."
