Solid and entertaining

My feelings toward Swedish films can not be called warm. Most of the movies produced in Sweden are crap. 90% of the available movies are made by the same people, featuring the same actors, boring and completely without merit when it comes to originality and style. That's why it makes me so happy when, once in a long while, i get to see a movie like this one. A movie that gives me hope for the future.

"Kim Nowak badade aldrig i Genesarets sjö" is based on the novel from Håkan Nesser with the same title. A quite odd book from Mr. Nesser who usually writes more or less standard crime-drama. Here though it's more a recollection from his youth, a sunny tale from an idyllic 1960's summer that turns dark before the story ends.

There is much to separate this from the mainstream Swedish movie production. First of all the production values are great. The photography is excellent, the music is equally good, the locations are wonderful and the visual style is consistent and thought-through. The directing is also done with a steady hand from director Martin Asphaug. What i appreciated most though was the acting, from both child-actors and adults. Most of the adult actors are recognizable from TV-series and movies but they are not what you would call "Swedish A-list" perhaps. Which is hugely liberating to say the least since i've seen that A-list in what feels like a hundred disappointing movies already. The most famous actor here is probably Jonas Karlsson who, as usual, is excellent.

When the movie ends i sit back in the theater and think "why can't more Swedish movies be like this one?". It was probably not that expensive and the actors were not the most famous (although they were good), still it worked better than most Swedish films together. There is a feeling here for what works, both visually and story-wise. It seems to me that the scriptwriters and the director both knew what they wanted out of this movie and managed to relay that to the actors. It's not about huge budgets, which is what Swedish film-makers often complain about not having. Rather it's about solid film-making and an eye for what works and what people appreciate.

This is not spectacular film-making, but it's solid and entertaining. And in most cases that's enough. I rate it 7/10.

1962, leave us alone!

This is not the first movie about being a boy in the 60s. It is not even the first Swedish film about it. You've seen everything so many times before.

1)Young guys being sexually aroused by a beauty, whom they are many solar systems from getting.

2) Forbidden cigarette smoking.

3) A warm summer.

Well, I don't have to tell you about it, but you find all these details here. It's not the worst film ever on the subject, but it's far from the best.

The plot is however constructed in a rather clever way and in the end you have some ideas of what really happened, but there are also many alternative solutions. It starts as a comedy and ends in a dark secret. This is not the first time a film ends like that, but all right, you can sit the movie through without being ashamed.

interesting film spoiled by a silly plot

Warning: Spoilers
Sweden is a pleasant place. Out in the countryside not that much happens. This film is a very good portrayal of this fact, an interesting exploration into the pleasantly peaceful life given interest and 'excitement' by the intelligence and curiosity of youth. It's well filmed and moves at a countryside pace where the eyes can absorb the spectacular scenery. For me, however, the film was wrecked by an almost compulsory 'attention getter' that frequently is found in Swedish films, an infection obviously transmitted during a Hollywood visit. All had been progressing wonderfully until the film is interrupted by a gratuitous serious crime inserted into the plot. A totally meaningless and unrealistic meandering of a 'sod the public' writer who clearly was out of touch with the real crime stats of the era.I almost feel like the film ends after about 60 mins... what follows is just 'packing'. Apart from that the film was interesting and pleasant. I would love to award it more points for the acting, direction, visual presentation, props, all really deserved a better plot. Sometimes, Sweden doesn't recognise it's outstanding beauty and cultural treasure. Things of great worth are found not in the spectacularly dramatic, but in the ordinarily wonderful.

I actually couldn't provide a spoiler because I don't know whodunnit!

Warning: Spoilers
This was one of the runners-up for the audience award at the 30th Cleveland Int'l Film Festival. A really good story, excellent young actors and a good Indie ending leave you hanging and glad for the tension.

The story, told in a nearly complete flashback goes back to a pivotal summer in Erik's life. Many clichéd (and I don't say this to be mean) elements are brought into play, although since this is Sweden the "forbidden" pleasures are more in the perception of the American movie goer. The story holds together very well, with the various elements of the drama each contributing nicely to the plot and able to be the scrutiny of the viewer.

There's no chance taken in catching this movie. The screenplay is well-written and well-executed.

Oh, and watch out for the hammer!

The best Swedish countryside drama-thriller in ages.
jappel-224 March 2006
Splendid storytelling and dialog. Beautiful photography in this over all feel good drama/thriller. This movie describes the mentality, and the way of life in a small town in the middle of Sweden in a superb way. All the way to the thrilling end of the story.

Great acting from booth Jonas Karlsson and Helena af Sandeberg.

This is a must see movie for everybody who lived in the 50-60th and a should see movie for all the rest. It's not every day you watch a drama-thriller with this type of please tell me more I want more feeling.

To sum it up: I must say I love it. And I advise you to see it.

Great movie!

I thought this movie was great.

I usually don't like Swedish movies (I'm Swedish myself, mind you) but this was great. I like how the past mixed with the future and I thought the ending was really surprising!

It's not really a thriller. It's not an action movies. But I wasn't bored. I like the feeling in this movie. It's a story about true friendship. :)

It made me somewhat nostalgic.

I would really recommend this movie to people who doesn't want gunshots every five minutes, fast cars and explosions.

The tale of a summer
blumdeluxe22 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"Kim Novak never swam in Genezareth's lake" is a Swedish movie dealing with two boys who spend their summer at a house near a lake with the older brother of one of them. When the brother falls in love with their former teacher, who's engaged to a brutal beater, the idyllic life threatens to darken.

I really liked the story of this film. At times it tries to be a bit too artsy and I believe that doesn't necessarily benefit the movie but all in all you can see that a lot of love was put into this production. Unlike many other Scandinavian movies, this one isn't necessarily depressing, although it has its dark moments too. It is quite easy to connect with the two boys, their feelings and actions. If you summarize what happens, you'll find that it isn't actually that much but still you don't ever feel bored or not entertained because the slowed down rhythm of the film is part of its characterization.

All in all this is a reflective coming-of age story that comes with an excellent plot but sometimes exaggerates the indie and art part a bit. Nonetheless it is worth a watch and will leave you richer than it found you.
