Jonathon is unhappy in his relationship well, perhaps not unhappy but just bored. Working late yet again in his office, he gets chatting to the cleaner and decides to go and meet her in the pub afterwards. He makes his excuses to his wife about missed trains etc and stays out with his cleaner. They chat about love and such while they drift from flirtation to something more but the guilt starts to build within him.
Floating. In the context of this film it implies a state of no certain movement, of just drifting or staying where you are. Jonathon feels this after ten years in a relationship. He longs for flirting but not from his wife and, although she loves him, he feels bad that he cannot return the depth of her affection. None of these things are ever said in the film but it is delivered so well that it is easy to follow and, for men perhaps more than women, very easy to relate to. The story doesn't quite ring true but it is enough to help establish the character of Jonathon and, since this is out focus, the cleaner doesn't matter so much specifically. In regards Jonathon the film shows how well it is written and delivered by being very impacting and engaging. The lead actor (credits too tiny to give me his name) is excellent he understands his character and is able to deliver it in a totally convincing turn. The support cast are fine but it is all his.
Overall this is a very good short film although I suppose if you don't understand Jonathon then it will all be lost on you. To me the character was interesting and very well delivered by the writer/director and lead actor. The story may be more of a means to an end than a story but it doesn't matter so much because it more than makes up for it in other ways.
