Fast & Furious Director Challenges Highlander

Justin Lin, director behind Fast & Furious, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, and Annapolis will be teaming with producer Neal H. Moritz to reboot the fantasy adventure film series Highlander for Summit Entertainment.
People forget after 20 years’ worth of lesser sequels and spinoffs that the original Highlander was a pretty high profile film starring Christopher Lambert (at the man’s peak) alongside Sean Connery. Original producer Peter Davis is returning to hand the torch over to the new filmmakers.
Highlander, like the original film, will focus on a race of immortals that wage war upon each other through time. It’s a concept that’s broad enough to be attacked from a fresh angle by a talented writer, and luckily we’ve got two pretty decent ones on our hands: Iron Man and Punisher: War Zone writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway.

Justin Lin to Direct Highlander Reboot

Last year it was announced that a Highlander remake was on the way, with Iron Man writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway hired to give a fresh new take on Russell Mulcahy's original 1986 film that would lay the groundwork for a franchise reboot. Considering that the Highlander series had slowly descended into the depths of direct-to-dvd hell over the past 20 years, I don't think anyone was too surprised by this move. The question remains though... can Highlander actually be repackaged and sold to a new generation?
This week Summit Entertainment has apparently found a couple of people who they feel can pull it off: director Justin Lin and producer Neal Moritz, who previously worked together on the last two installments of The Fast and the Furious series. Lin's directing credits also include the crime thriller Better Luck Tomorrow, boxing drama Annapolis, and mockumentary Finishing the Game. Well, I guess

Fast & Furious Director To Remake Highlander

Summit Entertainment has announced that Justin Lin will direct a re-imagination (ie reboot) of Highlander. Of course, Summit hopes that this reboot with "spur a new franchise for the studio."
Lin made his name with the awesome High School-based indie crime drama Better Luck Tomorrow in 2002 (if you haven't seen it, add it to your netflix queue), but has since turned out mostly generic Hollywood crap like Annapolis, Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift and Fast & Furious. The good news is that Iron Man screenwriters Art Marcum and Matt Holloway are working on the new take, which will expand on Highlander's original core mythology of immortals battling amongst us, hunting each other through the ages by tapping its newly minted creative team to take its re-imagination to new heights.
Full press release after the jump.

New 'Highlander' Movie on the Way

There can be only one; it’s been the tagline throughout the 'Highlander' movie and television franchise. Unfortunately, for much of that time, the "one" could have referred to the total number of Highlander films that were actually good.
Now it appears Summit Entertainment has an opportunity to change that. According to Variety, director Justin Lin and producer Neal Moritz have been hired to revitalize the once-popular science-fiction/fantasy property, which concerns sword-wielding immortals battling one another down through the ages.
The original 1986 Highlander, which starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown, and was directed by Russell Mulcahy, was a bigger success in Europe than in the United States. Meanwhile, despite retaining the same director and stars as the first film, the futuristic 1991 sequel Highlander 2: The Quickening is considered among the most incomprehensible movies ever made.
'Highlander' actually achieved most of its popularity and

The director of this new installment talks about the new DVD, working with the original cast and a possible fifth film
Justin Lin is a director who has proven he can succeed both in and out of the studio system. His breakthrough film, Better Luck Tomorrow, lead to such studio films as Annapolis and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, but the director also found time between those projects to make the indie sensation Finishing the Game. The director is back with the franchise that brings all the hot cars and hot women to the silver screen, with the new film Fast & Furious, which hits the shelves on DVD and Blu-ray on July 28. I had the chance to speak with Lin today over the phone, and here's what he had to say.
I really enjoyed Tokyo Drift and the writer on that, Chris Morgan, had written this film as well,

James Franco Stars in His Professor's Indie Film

I like this James Franco chap. Always have. Part of it, I think, is that he never seems like he's slumming. It would have been real easy to phone in Harry Osborne in Spider-Man -- it seems like such a thankless role -- but he wound up giving one of the most finely calibrated performances in the franchise. It would have been even easier to milk his heartthrob qualities for a banal and lucrative career. Instead, he's constantly doing something challenging. And even when he's not, e.g. in total junk food like Annapolis, he tries to add value.
I think I like the guy even more after this story. Franco is enrolled in the masters program in directing at Nyu -- points for both ambition ("I want to direct") and humility ("I need to learn how"). (Apparently he's also, simultaneously, getting his masters in English from Columbia, which is sort of insane.

Jordana Brewster’s talent, beauty and natural screen presence have etched a permanent place for her in Hollywood in both film and television. Brewster can currently be seen as Dr. Jill Roberts in a recurring role on the NBC series “Chuck.”
Some of Brewster’s past credits include the lead role in the 2007 ABC pilot “Mr. and Mrs. Smith”; starring in “Annapolis” opposite James Franco; and “Nearing Grace,” an indie film adapted from Scott Sommer’s novel, which premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival in July 2005.

Given we've already seen two full trailers, there's not much new footage we're going to see in this Fast & Furious Super Bowl TV spot. Plus they're still using the film's biggest selling points - women, cars, and Vin Diesel / Paul Walker. So that you can get this one out of the way, we've also got the new TV spot for Fast & Furious early. There's not much more to say, so fire this one up if you're excited to check it out. Despite my own lack of interest in this TV spot, I'm still going to see Fast & Furious once it hits theaters.

It seems like everyone involved is fully committed to Fast & Furious, so maybe it'll be worth the wait...if you have indeed been waiting for it.
There's a new trailer now over at Yahoo! Movies, and that first minute? Hell yeah. Very nicely done. Of course, the gang's all here - Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jordana Brewster. It's directed by Justin Lin, who also did Tokyo Drift, and he directed Jordana Brewster in Annapolis.
I have no idea what it's about, but the cars really seem to be going fast. And isn't that what you're paying for?
