Rumors Vs. Facts: Casting war! Anne Hathaway, Julia Stiles, Rachel McAdams, Romola Garai in SpiderMan 4?

19 November 2009 9:50 PM, PST | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

Four awesome young actresses are reported/rumored to be positioning themselves for a possible role in the next Spiderman movie. The character in contention: The Black Cat.

But before we go any further, is this newsworthy? Definitely. While it maybe just a fictional character, Black Cat is quite interesting and intriguing. She's been related to Spiderman in the past and her descent into the world of crime is worth a good look. Has casting actually started? No confirmation yet from the studio, but with the names of the actresses being mentioned, fans are, indeed, getting excited.

Two of these fab actresses are known for both period and contemporary films - Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married/Becoming Jane) and Romola Garai ( Inside I'm Dancing/Atonement), while the other two - Julia Stiles and Rachel McAdams are more 'inclined' to portray modern characters, or so it seems... As of this writing, McAdams is already out of contention. »

Anne Hathaway 'approached for role in Spider-Man 4'

19 November 2009 4:32 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Yet another actress is reported to be under consideration for a possible role in the next Spider-Man film.

This time it's Anne Hathaway joining the queue of female contenders.

Her previous credits include Brokeback Mountain, The Devil Wears Prada and Becoming Jane.

According to a report by Movie Scoop, and subsequently Deadline Hollywood, producers of Spider-Man 4 have approached the 27-year-old actress to star in the film.

No role was specified but fan speculation suggests it's Felicia Hardy aka the villainous love interest Black Cat.

Movie Scoop says, however, that the star is in line to play a character called Valeria while Deadline Hollywood confirms Hathaway won't replace Kirsten Dunst who is already cast to reprise the role of Mary-Jane Watson.

Hathaway is the fourth actress to be linked to the film following earlier rumours centring on Rachel McAdams, Romola Garai and Julia Stiles.

McAdams denied the reports and Garai »

Hollywood should stop making films about our great writers | Tanya Gold

Bright Star, the new movie about Keats, has ruined him for me. It's not the first time and it certainly won't be the last

On Sunday I did the bad thing again. I bought a ticket to Bright Star, the biopic about John Keats. I have always liked Keats, despite the line, "Thou wast not born for death, immortal Bird!" But I had forgotten what I call the Impromptu Law – after the George Sand biopic, Impromptu (1991), which stars Judy Davis as Sand and Hugh Grant and a handkerchief as Chopin.

My "Impromptu law" states: don't watch films about writers. Die of tuberculosis. Stick your head in the oven. If you are a writer, stick your life's work in the oven as well – then maybe they won't get you.

As soon as Keats appeared with his quill, I knew it was bad. Ignore the applauding critics; they have been blinded by the Shrek franchise. »

tMF Fast Forward: Keira Knightley is victorious! Will play Eliza Dolittle in My Fair Lady!

25 October 2009 3:48 AM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

Probably one of the most coveted roles in film, My Fair Lady's Eliza Dolittle already has a history of being a role most sought after by big stars in cinema - Audrey Hepburn, Julie Andrews and Elizabeth Taylor, among others. Just now, The Telegraph reported that in the latest film adaptation, Keira Knightley was cast as the ambitious, working class girl who started out as a flower seller and became the toast of high society.

Details as follows:

"Joe and Keira are looking forward to working together again immensely," says a friend of the 37-year-old director.

In August, I reported that Knightley had been forced to compete with Johansson, 24, for the role of the Cockney flower seller played by Audrey Hepburn in the 1964 film.

"I have two actresses as potential Elizas, one British, the other American," said Sir Cameron Mackintosh, who is producing the film with Duncan Kenworthy, at the time. »

Tina Mabry's "Mississippi Damned," an independent American production, won the Gold Hugo as the best film in the 2009 Chicago International Film Festival, and added Gold Plaques for best supporting actress (Jossie Thacker) and best screenplay (Mabry). It tells the harrowing story of three black children growing up in rural Mississippi in circumstances of violence and addiction. The film's trailer and an interview with Mabry are linked at the bottom.

The win came over a crowed field of competitors from all over the world, many of them with much larger budgets. The other big winner at the Pump Room of the Ambassador East awards ceremony Saturday evening was by veteran master Marco Bellocchio of Italy, who won the Silver Hugo as best director for "Vincere," the story of Mussolini's younger brother. Giovanna Mezzogiorno and Filippo Timi won Silver Hugos as best actress and actor, »

10 Most Underrated Young Actors

12 October 2009 7:54 PM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

Cinema is filled with multi-talented young actors who bring to life all types of characters. Sometimes, a role is given to the wrong guy - just because he has the looks (pin-up pretty, looks awesome wearing trunks) and the connection (a powerful talent agent at his side). But when the role is given to the right guy - moviegoers get to witness something unique, memorable and powerful, even magical. Anyway, even the 'right guy' needs an agent, of course...

- - -

- - - Underrated versus Overrated: If you've watched Jumper, then you'll notice the difference between Jamie Bell and Hayden Christensen - Bell has undeniable screen presence, I can't say the same with Hayden. It could have been different if Tom Sturridge was retained to play Hayden's part. Anyway, who am I to argue? Christensen has more box office appeal than the relatively unknown Sturridge, but acting-wise?
