Batman laid waste to those in his path
Photo: Warner Bros. Well, instead of jumping the gun and publishing several articles based on the box-office records The Dark Knight was sure to break I held off and bring you my traditional Friday recap with the help of Steve Mason from Fantasy Moguls. I could have written an article when Warner Bros. sent me a press release telling me, "Just past the stroke of midnight, Warner Bros. Pictures' The Dark Knight broke the record for a 12:01 a.m. film opening, earning an unprecedented $18,489,000 at the box office... That total does not include the grosses from the subsequent 3:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. showings." But I didn't... I could have written an article around 5:30 Pm on Friday when Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood wrote, "Warner Bros sources tell me The Dark Knight is opening to a humongous $60M today.

Universal Pictures released a brand new half page movie poster for film “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” aka Hellboy 2 by director Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) starring Ron Perlman (City of Lost Children, The Mutant Chronicles), Selma Blair and Doug Jones (Carnies) as Abe Sapien. Synopsis: With a signature blend of action, humor and character-based spectacle, the saga of the world’s toughest, kitten-loving hero from Hell continues to unfold in Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Bigger muscle, badder weapons and more ungodly villains arrive in an epic vision of imagination from Oscar-nominated director Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy). After an ancient truce existing between humankind and the invisible realm of the fantastic is broken, hell on Earth is ready to [...]

#1 movie predicted correctly: 0 Weeks in a Row 1. The Dark Knight The only question left on this one is the whole breaking the record conversation. That number is $151 million and it's held by the horrific Spider-Man 3. Dark Knight is around 100x better as a movie and it has huge buzz and IMAX-tacular footage too. So why not? I'm manning up and taking it to set the all-time record. It's the least I can do. Estimate: $152.1 million 2. Mamma Mia! I would call this counter-programming except for the salient fact that this can't be anyone's first choice. So will people see both? Sure. Around three million of them. Estimate: $21.0 million 3. Hancock Hancock will eventually beat Hellboy II. By eventually I mean "this weekend." Estimate: $16.7 million 4. Hellboy 2: The Golden Army Why? Simple. Dark Knight competes more with Hellboy II than it does Hancock. I don't make the rules. I just Oracle 'em.

Box office analysts are forecasting record ticket sales this weekend when the latest Batman movie, The Dark Knight, opens in 4,366 theaters -- the largest number of theaters ever to show any film. The record number of theaters is expected to offset the limited number of screenings imposed by the film's 2 1/2-hour length. Online ticket sellers have said that they are already doing record business and that some showings have already sold out. Carl Diorio, who covers the box office for the Hollywood Reporter, wrote today that the "smart money has Dark Knight debuting somewhere south of Spider-Man 3 -- which unspooled to a record $151.1 million in May 2007 -- and north of Iron Man, which opened in May this year with $102.1 million." The box office in general is expected to expand as the musical Mamma Mia, which opened to sensational business overseas last weekend, hits theaters in North America. In addition a slew of well-received holdovers will be attracting their fair share of business, including last weekend's winner, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Wall-E, and the 3-D Journey to the Center of the Earth.

This week finds the U.S. Army bringing war games to a whole other level, a '60s sex icon getting an exposé, Ron Perlman returning as the defender of small fluffy kittens everywhere and Eddie Murphy taking cinema egotism to new heights.

After the warm reception his first feature "Xx/Xy" received at Sundance in 2002, director Austin Chick returned to the snowy slopes of Park City to debut his sophomore effort, which seemed to impress our own Matt Singer when he saw it in January. Assembling an noteworthy ensemble that includes the likes of Robin Tunney, Naomie Harris, Rip Torn and David Bowie, Chick follows Tom and Josh Sterling (Josh Hartnett and Adam Scott, respectively), two brothers desperately trying to right the sinking ship of their failing dot-com company in the weeks leading up to the devastating September 11th attacks.

Issue #80
July 2008
Now that I’ve seen and fallen in love with Hellboy II: The Golden Army (review), the cover for this issue and Rue Morgue’s subsequent coverage of Guillermo del Toro’s masterful sequel is that much more meaningful. There’s something about the way Jovanka’s interview with del Toro rolls that gives it a very intimate feel; just one of the things I dig about this magazine.
A chat with Doug Jones, who has more roles than anyone in Hellboy II, reviews of some of the printed expansions of the Hellboy universe and a very, very fast interview with creator Mike Mignola round out the love for Golden Army. Thankfully it is well justified love as hopefully most, if not all, of you discovered last weekend.
From demons and monsters to ... well, demons, monsters and aliens; the second big piece is Monica Kuebler’s focus on X-Files: I Want to Believe.

This is the piece of the crown that no one would care about had I done what I should have done.
Photo: Universal Pictures Spoilers lie ahead... read with caution... I could ask a myriad of questions concerning Hellboy 2 as well as its coverage. Why did every outlet act as if a $34 million opening was something fantastic (I even fell for it on Friday)? What was that shower and locker scene all about? However, there is one question that really bugs me, and it is a big ol'spoiler so if you haven't seen the film then runaway and hide right now. Why wasn't Hellboy 2 only about 20 minutes long? I ask this because you see that little lady above, that's Princess Nuala. She has a special bond with her brother Prince Nuada, the film's major baddie. In the film Nuada wants to start a war against the humans, something

The superhero take-over of the box office continued apace over the weekend as Universal's Hellboy II: The Golden Army took over first place with $34.54 million, edging out last week's superhero flick Hancock, which took in $32.08 million. (Another superhero, Batman, is expected to take over next weekend.) In third place was Warner Bros.' Journey to the Center of the Earth, which earned $21.01 million. In fact, Journey, which was designed to be shown in digital 3-D, far surpassed the two leaders in ticket sales at the 954 theaters which were able to show it in that format. The 3-D theaters averaged $12,559 in receipts, while Hellboy II averaged $10,780 and Hancock, $8,091. In its third week, Disney's Wall-E added another $18.79 million to its gross, bringing its total to $163.06 million.
The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Media by Numbers (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date):1. As predicted, the box-office battle between two superheroes, Hellboy and Hancock, proved to be close. But in the end Universal's Hellboy II: The Golden Army turned out to be the winner as it collected an estimated $35.9 million, while the second week of Hancock, starring Will Smith, wound up with $33 million. The 3-D film Journey to the Center of the Earth opened in third place with $20.6 million. But Eddie Murphy's Meet Dave, was not well met, earning just $5.3 million to place seventh. Another disappointment was Warner Bros.' Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, which took in only $2.4 million in its second weekend of wide release. Meanwhile, in its sixth week, Kung Fu Panda crossed the $200-million mark as it sold $4.3 million worth of tickets to place eighth. Overall, the top 12 movies brought in $145 million, down 16 percent from the comparable weekend a year ago, according to box-office trackers Media by Numbers.

I bet Universal’s pretty happy with itself right now for stepping in when Sony couldn’t be bothered with the Hellboy franchise. Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army (review) kicked some serious ass at the box office this weekend, to the tune of $35.9 million.
Personally I couldn’t be happier. The movie is amazing on pretty much every level, full of fantastic action, great monsters, believable characters, and the first-ever fishman/demon singing duet! This marks the largest opening for del Toro to date, beating out Blade II by a large margain, and is a comfortable $12 million higher than the original Hellboy.
Of course, all this means a very, very badass Hellboy II DVD is on its way. "We start the DVD the day the screenplay gets approved,” del Toro told Home Media Magazine. “Javier Soto and I, we’ve been working on the DVD since day zero.

Hellboy 2 took me down. I'm man enough to admit that. My only joy will be when Dark Knight sends it to a healthy 54% drop next weekend. #1 movie predicted correctly: 0 Weeks In A Row 1. Hellboy 2: The Golden Army This prediction feels heavy to me. I bet they come in closer to $35m on Monday because a title with "hell" in it is not going to attract the church crowd. However, it's Del Toro's biggest opening and a clear sign that he's grown the initial audience. Kudos to him. Result: 35.8 million (My rank: #2, $9.5m off) 2. Hancock Interestingly enough, I underestimated this one too. It didn't face the normal 55% beating that most 4th of July films take. The general public likes this one I suppose. Or, say it with me now, the weekend was a weak one overall in terms of competition. Result: 33.0 million (My rank: #1, $4.1m off) 3. Journey to

Weekend of July 11 – 13, 2008
“Hellboy II: The Golden Army” topped the North American box office this weekend with $35.8 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Guillermo del Toro’s delivered a better performance than its predecessor “Hellboy,” which took home only $23.1 million during its opening weekend in 2004. In this second adventure, Hellboy (Ron Perlman) must stop a ruthless prince from waging war on humanity.
Last week’s box office champ “Hancock” dropped to No. 2 this weekend, earning $33 million and bringing its total domestic gross to $165 million after only two weeks in release. Directed by Peter Berg, the film stars Will Smith as a drunken superhero who agrees to rebuild his damaged image in the community.

We knew it would be a dogfight for the top spot at the box office this weekend, and it turned out to be closer than we even expected. Hellboy II: The Golden Army, which opened strong on Friday, needed that leverage to fend off a charge from Hancock on Saturday and Sunday. Although Hellboy finished right around $36 million for the weekend, according to Box Office Mojo, it only won the battle on Friday and Sunday; Hancock outgrossed the new Guillermo del Toro film on Saturday and finished the weekend with $33 million, which I believe makes this the closest finish of the summer.
For Hancock, the weekend puts Will Smith closer to another $200 million movie; it has now earned over $165 million in 12 days. Hellboy still has a decent shot to break $100 million, although a lot of that depends on how it can weather the storm once The Dark Knight arrives next weekend.

There's good news all around with the Friday box office estimates. We'll begin at the top and work our way down.
It appears that Hellboy II: The Golden Army may be headed towards the $37 - $40 million range this weekend, which a near $14 million Friday, according to Box Office Mojo. That should mean a $100 million run for the Hellboy sequel, maybe upwards of $120 - $130 million depending on how it plays in the next couple of weeks. This number may be a touch higher than projections, although the Saturday numbers will tell us a lot not just about the weekend in particular but well this might play down the line.
Hancock finished in second place on Friday, and should wind up with another $30 million or so after its second weekend, proving Will Smith's new movie isn't just critic proof, but to a large extent, it's audience proof, too. Average to below

Photo: Universal Pictures Steve Mason has published his early Friday estimates and as it was expected Hellboy 2: The Golden Army is out in front and will take the top spot for the weekend barring a natural disaster that wipes out only Hellboy 2 screens. The red devil opened strong on Friday with an estimated $12.75 million on Friday on its way to an estimated $34 million for the weekend. I am just curious if audiences are going to be as taken with the film as the majority of critics were. I personally did not like it at all as the romance and comedic angles turned me off spectacularly. However, our "Shallow End" columnist David Frank texted me after he saw it only a few hours ago and seemed to enjoy it, believing it to be superior to the first film which grossed a meager $59.62 million at the box-office in total.

Friday 9:00 p.m. (Pacific): Hellboy II: The Golden Army will be Guillermo del Toro’s best-ever opening, and the film’s strong opening dramatically improves the odds that Universal will put together another impressive summer streak of 4 consecutive $100M grossing movies and 5-in-a-row is a real possibility. The sequel to 2004’s Hellboy scared up $12.75M on Friday and that will likely translate to a $34M opening weekend. Critics have swooned for the 2nd chapter of this franchise with a fantastic 87% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but Hellboy is hardly the best-known comic book character with a movie this summer, and the big red guy from hell is not the traditional superhero. Technically, he is a demon who sands down his horns, chomps on Cuban cigars, has a giant paw nicknamed “the right hand of doom” and likes to play with cats. All of this meant that the Universal marketing folks.
