Sex & Nudity

  • In one of the very first scenes of the show, a prostitute in lingerie straddles a young man and orgasms. She then jabs a nail into his eye, causing him to slap her in the face. The entire scene is slow and off-putting.
  • A gay young man attempts to seduce another young man. Nothing is shown and the latter doesn't seem to express interest.
  • A few brief instances of implied sex (nothing overly sexual, though a woman's side-breast and back are seen for some time). In another scene, a girl's bare back and part of her buttocks are seen after presumed sex with an old man.

Violence & Gore

  • Bloody violence on the level of Darker than Black.
  • Characters getting decapitated. Lots of bloody gun violence.

Profanity

  • In the dub: damn, hell, bastard, ass, bitch, asshole, shit
  • Little in the Japanese sub.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Occasional smoking and drinking.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The entire show has an eerie art style, further made worse by the dim locations and incredibly slow pace.
  • Most of the characters we follow are presented either as nihilists or psychopaths. Even the main character, Ichise, seems to act like an obedient dog with very little agency. Only a few minor characters seem to exhibit any kind of nobility or humanity.
  • While the whole show is depressing from start to finish, the remaining three episodes are devoid of any hope.
  • The setting is dark and dystopian. Onishi ruthlessly kills someone. Some other instances of intense violence. The car sex scene can be discomferting. A girl loses the will to live after being gang raped off-screen, very upsetting.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • In a later episode, Ichise, the doctor, and a minor character leave the underground city to visit the surface world. Despite the use of warmer colours and a blue sky above them, they discover that the surface people became bored with their peaceful existence and 'willingly' turned themselves into ghosts. This revelation causes the doctor to kill herself in a bathtub (off-screen).
  • In the final two episodes, most named characters are killed when the city of Lux descends into chaos. Regular people become frenzied mobs, individuals are turned into creepy robotic creatures called Shapes, and the surface world is unable to send any assistance.
  • Ichise is left alone in the decimated city of Lux when everyone else is either dead or left as immobile statues. He then slowly passes away when the cybernetics keeping him alive cease to function. Extremely depressing, especially when a soft piano song brings the series to an end.
  • Some robots are shown convulsing near the end of the show. The animation can be very uncanny.
