Violence & Gore

  • The ground becomes entwined with red weed that looks like veins filled with blood.
  • The body count in War of the Worlds, both seen and implied, is massive. In every place the relentless alien war machines attack, we're left to assume most of the human population is obliterated. We see numerous people vaporized by alien lasers, lost to explosions, presumably crushed by flying debris and drowned in a water attack.
  • Dead bodies float down a river and hang limply from a downed airliner.
  • Survivors riot over a rare working car, smashing windows and bloodying faces. Tearing at a broken windshield, a man's hands are bloodied. Guns are fired in a crowd. Shortly after this, one panicked man shoots another and takes his car.
  • The military engages in all-out assaults against the machines, complete with automatic weapons fire, air strikes and huge explosions.
  • The aliens take some humans alive, storing them in external "baskets" to be ingested by the apparently biological war machines. Gallons of orange liquid, implied to be human blood, flows freely from the machines. At one point, the air is humid with human blood, as we see a living person dropped to the ground out of view and then impaled with a giant alien needle to suck out his blood. Blood-colored vines cover the ground and structures in areas the aliens have conquered.

Profanity

  • Many uses of "goddamn" "shit", "bullshit", "ass", "asshole", "damn", and "hell"; all throughout the movie. Some of this is hard to hear due to the loud action sequences
  • One use of dick
  • One use of balls.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • This film can be extremely scary and disturbing for some viewers
  • The scene where the aliens first attack and begin obliterating people with their weapons is very frightening.
  • Rachel frequently screams and cries in response to the frightening events happening around her.
  • Rachel sees a lot of dead bodies floating down a river. She understandably starts to panic and hyperventilate, until her father finds her and gets her out of there.
  • The aliens are pretty scary.
  • There is a frightening scene where a plane crashes into the house where the family is staying.
  • There are many people panicking which adds more to the already intense setting.
  • In one specific scene the alien comes into the cellar where Ray and Rachel are hiding. The alien comes very close to killing both and it is very intense and suspenseful.
  • While running away from danger, Ray and his ten-year-old daughter accept safety in a man's cellar. The homeowner's whole family has died. Later, after the man's sanity has become questionable, Ray comes upon the man telling the daughter "I used to have a daughter just like you. If something ever happens to your daddy, I will take care of you." At this, the father angrily walks up, makes his daughter walk away, and forcefully tells the homeowner "You have nothing to say to her! If you have any questions, or anything to say, you say it to me!"

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • To protect his daughter, Ray apparently kills a man (off-camera) who is recklessly putting them at risk of capture.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • In a series of scenes we see a body stabbed by a retractable arm on the aliens and blood drained from it which appears to be what is being sprayed all over the ground and turning into blood vessels/ capillaries. Then the two main characters are captured by one of these aliens.
  • When Ray determines that the above man is endangering his and Rachel's safety, he puts a blindfold over Rachel's eyes, places her hands over her ears, and has her sing a lullaby to herself while he goes and presumably kills the man (we hear sounds of a struggle, and Rachel seems to realize what's going on). This is possibly the darkest scene in the film.
