The Decade’s Film: 2005-2009

It had been a successful decade for the comic book movie, with that trend continuing into the latter half of the decade. Just as looked like the public demand for irradiated heroes looked to be diminishing, with lacklustre showings from the likes of Spider-Man 3 and Fantastic Four, out came Iron Man. Coupled with a brilliant script and an excellent performance from Robert Downey Jr as the titular zillionaire industrialist/playboy/freedom fighter/all-round genius, the end result was something truly special. Downey’s career was also revitalised, earning him a role in Tropic Thunder (which would earn him an Oscar nomination). Louis Leterrier’s The Incredible Hulk took a similar approach, this time giving Edward Norton of Fight Club fame a shot at getting under the skin of the green goliath.
They set a tough act to follow, but followed they were by one Christopher Nolan. With the Batman

Georgia
Opens: 2010
Cast: Val Kilmer, Andy Garcia, Rupert Friend, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Johnathon Schaech
Director: Renny Harlin
Summary: An American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native get caught in the crossfire of the five-day Russia-Georgia conflict in August 2008, and then have to deal with their obligation to be impartial.
Analysis: A timely parable on war, or Hollywood propaganda filmmaking at its worst? Wherever it goes, especially in Europe and the former Soviet states, "Georgia" will cause a lot of talk and controversy as the incidents depicted are still so fresh in many's minds. Like all topics of the sort, it'll also have its strong supporters and detractors having opinions on the film long before a frame of footage is screened anywhere.
Shot on-location in Tbilisi, the project also marks a potential return to form for Finnish director Renny Harlin. Given the right material the skilled action director delivered three

No Love for Harry Potter or Twilight Franchises at Award Season

Let the games begin! Award season kicked off Tuesday at 5am in Los Angeles as the 67th Golden Globe nominations were announced live. Like every year, there were a few surprises, a few shoe-in's, and a few snubs. There are two particular snubs we want to examine today, Harry Potter and Twilight got no love and if history has taught us anything, no love is coming their way during Oscar season. So, what gives? It is always interesting to see which films are handpicked for award season and historically the films that are the best received are dramatic character studies. They are the films that make you cry, move you, and make you want to change something about yourself. Dating back to 2004, the big winners during award season have all been serious dramas, Million Dollar Baby (2004), Crash (2005), The Departed (2006), No Country for Old Men (2007), and just last year Slumdog Millionaire (2008) all cleaned up,

The precursors have been squeezed into an unusually small period this year. The Globes, Bfca, Nyfcc, Lafca and SAG all announced in the space of one week. That's not business as usual. I guess this is one way to squeeze out all those regional critics groups because... who will care now? What does all this mean for Oscar? Generally clear consensus between the major precursors means that Oscar will be nearly a carbon copy. But with an unusual amount of time between the actors announcement and the announcement of Oscar nominations (Still more than a month away) it Might mean that Academy voters react to and against these lists, rather than along with them if you know what I mean. Do you know what I mean?

Weekly Poll Results: Best Movie Directed by Clint Eastwood

The results from the great Eastwood debate are in, and it looks like the majority of Film Junk readers believe that Unforgiven is Clint's best work behind the camera to date. It won a handful of Oscars and was nominated for a bunch more, so it's probably not all that surprising, however, I find it interesting that Million Dollar Baby was not the runner-up. Instead, it was ranked #4 after both Mystic River and Gran Torino. Most of Eastwood's older movies were severely underrepresented here, but I am assuming this is because less people have seen them. Do you agree with these results?
1. Unforgiven -- 41.9%
2. Mystic River -- 15.7%
3. Gran Torino -- 14.6%
4. Million Dollar Baby -- 12.2%
5. Letters from Iwo Jima -- 7.8%
6. The Outlaw Josey Wales -- 3%
7. High Plains Drifter -- 2.7%
8. The Bridges of Madison County -- 1.4%
9. The Gauntlet -- 0.5%
10. Sudden Impact -- 0.3%

Bryce Dallas Howard Joins Clint’s Hereafter

Bryce Dallas Howard has signed on to Clint Eastwood’s next film, Hereafter, a supernatural drama about three separate people affected by death in different ways. Matt Damon is already on board and filming is underway.
The announcement isn’t clear which role she’ll be playing, but Ron Howard’s daughter is most likely filling the part of Melanie, a love interest to Damon’s character, a factory worker and psychic who can communicate with the dead.
Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall, and Peter Morgan are executive producing. Cecile De France and Lyndsey Marshal also star. What, no room for Clint’s son this time?
Eastwood is a hit or miss director. 2004’s Million Dollar Baby seemed to be the peak of the acting legend’s second career. Each of his films have rare moments of greatness, but there’s not much of a unique style there aside from pulling memorable performances from the cast.

Moving on to 2004. What follows is my original top ten list, based on films released in NYC in 2004. If I have anything new to say that'll be in red after the original text.
Top Ten Runners Up (in descending order): Aviator, Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Mean Girls, Maria Full of Grace, The Five Obstructions, Collateral, Goodbye Lenin!, Birth and Closer Yes, I'm absolutely horrified by the rankings now. Nothing about that ranking feels right now. I am most ashamed that Birth was only at number [cough] 19 in its year. In my self-flattering memory I "almost" put it in the top ten despite the then brutal reviews. I was ahead of my time! Oh well... at least I did actually name it the #1 most underappreciated film of the year. At the time I said...

The film also won best director for Lee Daniels, supporting actress for Mo’Nique and screenplay for Geoffrey Fletcher (tying with Ron Clements, Rob Edwards and John Musker for "The Princess and the Frog.") However, Nicole Beharie was named best actress for "American Violet" over "Precious" star Gabby Sidibe. Morgan Freeman was selected best actor for "Invictus." The Circuit

Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman Deliver Predictable Drama With ‘Invictus’

Chicago – Director Clint Eastwood has given up on subtlety, choosing instead to tell old-fashioned, direct stories with as much technical skill and dramatic competency as possible. There’s nothing particularly wrong with the legendary director’s “Invictus,” but it’s also not nearly as memorable or thrilling as it could have or, given the true story that it tells, should have been.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Personally, I find Eastwood the most interesting when he deals in gray moral situations like the ones at the core of “Mystic River,” “Unforgiven” or “Million Dollar Baby”. Lately, with films like “Flags of Our Fathers,” “Changeling,” “Gran Torino,” and, now, “Invictus,” there is no gray. He seems to have lost any interest at all in striking a subtle chord. Every single character development and plot turn is telegraphed in the previews and merely underlined by the film itself. It’s old-fashioned cinema and, in this case,

Weekend Box-office: "Princess And The Frog" #1; "Invictus" Soft

The Princess and the Frog, the animated fairy tale that breaks new ground by offering a black heroine, placed #1 at the weekend box-office in North America with $30 million. The well-reviewed pic will likely be a major player over the holidays. Clint Eastwood's Nelson Mandela-inspired Invictus landed a somewhat soft $9 million, but Warner Brothers didn't expect much more, given the fact that the film has zero appeal to young people, many of whom are completely ignorant of the events that are told in the story. Warner Brothers isn't worried, however - they are masters at nurturing Eastwood films into gradual major box-office successes by slowly building word-of-mouth, as in the cases of Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby and Grand Torino. The film's side theme - a major rugby tournament - probably has little appeal to American audiences, who have never warmed to the sport. However, soccer mania in international

“Invictus” is Latin for “undefeated” and comes from a poem by William Ernest Henley. Henley was twenty-six and confined to a hospital bed when he wrote the poem; his leg had been amputated just below the knee due to tuberculosis of the bone. Henley wrote the poem to state that despite a crippling and potentially life-ending situation, he would be unbowed and would bounce back stronger than ever before. The country of South Africa was in a similar period of recovery in the mid-1990’s. With apartheid having just been put to an end and Nelson Mandela elected to the office of the President. Mandela had served twenty-seven years in prison for being a leader of the anti-apartheid movement and upon his release was looked upon as a hero from anti-apartheid groups both in and out of the country…read more [411mania.com]

This weekend:
Disney leap Frogs the competition to get to number one; Andy Daly moves to Jelly Stone Park; a Twilight star sees Hereafter; Polanski might not get a release but his Ghost Writer will; Diaz is a Bad Teacher; Frank Langella is an Unknown White Male and Frankenstein Lives in Death Race 2.
Box Office
Clint Eastwood’s Invictus scored just under $10 million over the weekend from 2,125 locations. Opening much like Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby, the film has had solid reviews from critics. With Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon head-lining, the film might have a chance of hitting the $100 million club if it gets some awards momentum.
Disney’s The Princess and the Frog took the top spot this weekend with an estimated $25 million. The film which had been on limited release in selected cinemas has gotten great reviews and with no real competition for the next

A South African newspaper’s heading read “he won the election, now can he lead a country?” This unhopeful question is referring to Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman), who in 1994 was elected the first black President of an apartheid stricken South Africa. After emerging 27 years from prison for political upheaval, Mr. Mandela had no inclinations to seek revenge on the white Afrikaners who placed the cuffs on him. Instead he disarms any such thought, and the film, entitled Invictus after an 1875 poem by British writer William Earnest Henley, is attracted to the passive stance which had, at its focal point, the sport of ruby.
