(Russia) Timur Bekmambetov's Russian blockbuster is a fantasy noir set amidst an urban underworld subculture of sorcerers, shapeshifters, seers and vampires in a depressed modern Moscow. The opposing forces of Light and Dark are held in check by a wobbly truce policed by supernatural cops from each side, and even the ostensible good guys, a seedy vice squad that uses humans as disposable bait in supernatural sting operations, are sketched in shades of gray. Features both the original Russian version (with creative subtitles that have the presence of an incantation taking physical form) and an English dubbed version.
