Brendan Fraser Gets Tangled Up In Crime In Whole Lotta Sole Trailer

22 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Writer-director Terry George has garnered critical acclaim and Oscar nods for his part in the creation of such harrowing biopics as In the Name of the Father and Hotel Rwanda. But for his latest effort, Whole Lotta Sole, the Northern Ireland-born filmmaker is treading familiar ground but offering a drastic while comical departure from his these heralded works. Whole Lotta Sole is an action-comedy set in Belfast, Northern Ireland, that involves culture clash, a desperate dad, and a wild web of gangsters and good guys. Brendan Fraser stars as an American shopkeeper who, by happenstance, entangles into an unlikely heist that involves robbing a fish market owned by the merciless mobster Mad Dog Flynn, played by The Departed's David O'Hara. $sb("ci030_8e5d4bb4687dd921003c37b5ee23875f",{"sbFeed":{"partnerId":39,"type":"video","contentId":495889," »

‘Whole Lotta Sole’ Trailer – ‘Hotel Rwanda’ Director Returns With Brendan Fraser Crime Caper

22 May 2012 10:55 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

After winning an Oscar for his short The Shore this year, Hotel Rwanda director Terry George is also finally returning to feature film territory after 2007′s Reservation Road. Premiering at Tribeca last month, Whole Lotta Sole sees the helmer switching to a more fun tone, with the story revolving around Brendan Fraser and a robbery in a Irish town. We were mixed on the film (full review here), complaining about his over-abundant subplots, but enjoying the overall light nature. The first trailer has arrived today and you can check it out below for the film also starring Colm Meaney, David O’Hara, Yaya DaCosta and Martin McCann.

Synopsis:

In a rowdy little corner of Belfast, hapless young father Jimbo Reagan is having an unlucky week. Indebted to big-time gangster Mad Dog Flynn for $5,000, Jimbo decides to knock over the local fish market, only to find out post-robbery that it’s »

Trailer For Whole Lotta Sole

21 May 2012 12:32 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Whole Lotta Sole is a different kettle of fish* to director 's Terry George's most recent output. Considering he made Hotel Rwanda, there was plenty of scope for adding some levity to his range, and he's definitely done that will this heist movie set in Ireland. The film's new trailer has landed and shows Brendan Fraser caught in the middle of some Irish capers. The man with the Thompson machine-gun is young father Jimbo Reagan (Martin McCann), driven to desperate measures by his debt to local gangster 'Mad Dog' Flynn (David O’Hara). The only problem is that his choice of target - the market than lends Whole Lotta Sole its fishy pun title - is owned by Flynn, so Jimbo's ill-gotten gains include records of the mobster's ill-gotten gains. Hardly likely to ingratiate him with the crim.Stumbling unwittingly into this mayhem is Brendan Fraser's »

‘Hotel Rwanda’ Scribe Keir Pearson to Make Directorial Debut With ‘The Tracks’

9 May 2012 6:00 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Oscar-nominated writer Keir Pearson will be making his directorial debut with an adaptation of Mara Leveritt‘s non-fiction novel, The Boys on the Tracks. Variety also reports that the scribe will be producing the project alongside Elizabeth Fowler.

The novel depicts the “true story of Linda Ives’ journey to learn the truth about the murder of her teenage son, which thrusts her into the largest cocaine smuggling and gun-running operation in U.S. history.” The project will also deal with “CIA-related conspiracy theories and ultimately concerns the Iran-Contra Scandal.” This will be the first feature film dealing with this subject matter.

Judging by his past work on Hotel Rwanda, the touchy subject matter shouldn’t be a problem for Pearson. Fowler gushed about the scribe stating, “Keir wrote a very powerful script and he is absolutely the best person to bring this incredible true story — that plays out like a Grisham thriller — to life. »

"Whole Lotta Sole" - Oscar-winning Terry George’s celebration of Belfast and its characters (IrishCentral)

4 May 2012 11:06 AM, PDT | IrishCentral | See recent IrishCentral news »

After intense dramas like Hotel Rwanda and In the Name of the Father, it’s a welcome surprise to see Irish director Terry George helming the lighthearted and thoroughly entertaining new comedy Whole Lotta Sole. George, who won an Oscar this year for his comic short film The Shore, has made his career directing big budget drama about ordinary people facing extraordinary challenges, and in that sense Whole Lotta Sole follows directly from his own tradition as a filmmaker. Opening with bang in South Boston, we meet Joe Maguire (Brendan Fraser) as he’s running out on his psychotically angry wife, who we later discover is the daughter of an Irish Mafia capo with a strong resemblance to Whitey Bulger. To escape her – and more importantly, to escape retaliation from her angry dad – Maguire decides to hole up in his cousin’s antique shop in Belfast, lying low until the heat wears off. »

Wes Bentley Co-Starring With Michael Pena In Diego Luna’s ‘Chavez’

2 May 2012 1:48 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

The Hunger Games and Terrence Malick‘s new film have solidified Wes Bentley‘s comeback trail, but Variety says he has yet another promising effort in the waits. (And I don’t mean Catching Fire, though that should do him a lot of good, too.) It would happen to be Chavez, the Michael Peña-led, Diego Luna-directed biopic of labor rights activist Cesar Chavez, which also stars Rosario Dawson and America Ferrera; shooting on the film began this week.

Written by Luna and Keir Pearson (Hotel Rwanda), it focuses on the period in which Chavez led “the largest nonviolent protest in U.S. history to accomplish his ultimate goal of obtaining basic human rights for over 50,000 farm workers in California.” He’s one of several new faces in the project’s fray; Jacob Vargas (Jarhead, Traffic), Mark Moses (Mad Men‘s Duck Phillips), Michael Cudlitz (Southland), and Yancey Arias (Legion, »

Whole Lotta Sole: Tribeca Review

29 April 2012 2:46 PM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

New York – In both his own films and his collaborations with Jim Sheridan, screenwriter-turned-director Terry George has invariably been drawn to serious subject matter, covering the Troubles in Northern Ireland (In the Name of the Father, The Boxer), the corrosive aftermath of family tragedy (Reservation Road), and true stories of an Ira hunger striker (Some Mother’s Son) or heroism in the midst of genocide (Hotel Rwanda). He takes an abrupt turn toward the light in Whole Lotta Sole. The calculatedly charming crime comedy could use a tad more vitality in its central character, played by Brendan Fraser,

Tribeca Review: 'Whole Lotta Sole' Is An Insufferable Comic Take On The British Gangster Movie

27 April 2012 6:04 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

The title of "Whole Lotta Sole" is the kind of gratingly obnoxious flourish that makes you hate the movie immediately. First of all it sits in your mouth like a blob of half-chewed gummy bears; secondly, it sounds like a direct-to-video independent movie produced in the mid-'90s that the Weinsteins picked up on a whim; and thirdly its implied double meaning – it's the name of a fish market in the film but its phonetic weight means something too ("whole lot of soul") – is meant to deepen the movie but instead leaves you even more irritated. The movie is pretty much exactly like that – it tries to sugarcoat the British gangster movie (and we're using the "British" term pretty broadly; it's set in Belfast) and leaves you totally annoyed and unsatisfied.

"Whole Lotta Sole" is the kind of movie that revels in hanging out with eccentric ("quirky") characters in this Irish town. »

Jessica Chastain: Iron Man 3 Scientist?

Jessica Chastain, Brad Pitt, The Tree of Life Jessica Chastain (instead of Diane Kruger, Isla Fisher, Gemma Arterton) to play a scientist as capable as Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark in Shane Black’s Iron Man 3? That’s a possibility, as per Deadline.com. Perhaps that is why Time magazine listed Chastain among its Most Influential People of the year. Or perhaps not. But one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood Chastain surely is. Last year, she had roles in about 200 movies, among them Tate Taylor’s The Help (which earned her a Best Supporting Actress nomination); The Debt, co-starring Helen Mirren and Sam Worthington; Terrence Malick’s Palme d’Or winner The Tree of Life, with Brad Pitt and Sean Penn; Coriolanus, with actor-director Ralph Fiennes and Gerard Butler; and Jeff NicholsTake Shelter, with Michael Shannon. [Tribeca Review] Whole Lotta Sole

23 April 2012 9:30 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

There’s a whole lotta plot in the latest feature film from this year’s Oscar-winner Terry George. The Hotel Rwanda director is tackling lighter material with Whole Lotta Sole, an Irish mob hostage movie starring the ever-amiable Brendan Fraser. For such a simple conceit, subplots upon subplots abound to make this relatively well-paced and enjoyable lark strain in its third act.

Fraser plays Maguire, a U.S. resident looking to restart his life in Belfast, Ireland after his physically-abusive wife, who has Irish mob ties in Boston, might have set a hit out for him. While that plot seems like it could be a film all unto its own, it is covered within the first minute of the film. Back to Belfast, there’s a new father named Jimbo (The Pacific‘s Martin McCann), who owes crime boss Mad Dog Flynn (David O’Hara, not straying far from his »

David Gordon Green's Suspiria Remake Gaining Steam

10 April 2012 6:30 PM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

David Gordon Green's (Pineapple Express) remake of Dario Argento's 1977 horror classic, Suspiria, has begun to gain some steam. Deadline reports that the long-planned project has been started searching for the actress to take on the role of Suzie in the film.

Chris Gebert and Gordon Green penned the script about "a young American student who travels to Europe to attend a world renowned school. After a series of brutal murders, she learns that the academy is a front for something way more sinister than education."

Crime Scene Pictures, and the team that brought Hotel Rwanda and I Am Love are producing the remake. They are currently in post production on another remake, Gambit, as well as preproduction on the Joe Lynch-directed Kate Hudson-starrer Everly

I finally watched the original last year at the recommendation of Venkman, and was haunted by the eerie music and imagery for days. »

David Gordon Green’s Suspiria Remake to Start Production This September

10 April 2012 1:40 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Director David Gordon Green’s remake of the 1977 horror film Suspiria is finally set to get underway later this year.  The Pineapple Express director has been talking about the project for years now, with a previous start date planned for 2010 after he finished Your Highness.  Obviously that didn’t happen, and Green instead chose to shoot the comedy The Sitter with Jonah Hill.  Now Crime Scene Pictures announced today that they will produce and finance Suspiria, with filming set to begin in September. Dario Argento’s original Suspiria centered on a young America student who travels to Europe to attend a world renowned school, but after a fellow student is brutally murdered and other ominous homicides occur, she begins to suspect that the school is a front for something much more sinister.  Argento’s iteration took place at a dance academy, but it's unknown if Green will be keeping that aspect of the pic. »

Have Your Say: David Gordon Green taking another stab at Suspiria

10 April 2012 1:39 PM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Mon Dieu!  Déjà Vu.  Suspiria redo!  It seems that the production outfit behind Hotel Rwanda and I Am Love have given David Gordon Green a fresh cash infusion to continue with the often off-again-on-again remake of Dario Argento's baroque-horror masterwork, Suspiria.  Deadline reports that Wild Bunch will be selling territory rights for this remake at Cannes, with shooting scheduled for September 2012; so things are certainly underway. It's unclear whether people were more unhappy with the idea of the remake a few years ago when the Arkansas-born director was as known for his indie-regional classics George Washington and All The Real Girls, or right now, when he is known for goofy stoner-comedies, Your Highness and The Sitter.Looking for a 2014 Suspiria?  Suspicious of David Gordon Green? »
