After the 80's passed it seemed that - for the most part - the slasher craze had finally come to a rest. Successful franchises like Halloween, Nightmare On Elm Street and Friday The 13th had been siphoned beyond emptiness and any intrigue the sub genre once offered appeared dead and buried. Then 1996 rolled around and Wes Craven, Kevin Williamson and Neve Campbell reminded us that good directing, storytelling, and acting is alive and well with the surprise hit Scream.
The next couple of years provided a massive batch of 'fresh' copycats and a handful of Scream sequels. Very few of any are remotely near noteworthy (quick nod to I Know What You Did Last Summer in order to avoid the onslaught of negative commentary from the obsessed Sarah Michelle Gellar fans out there J ), though Scream 2 remains a memorable franchise installment based solely on the unexpected axing of series favorite Randy (Jamie Kennedy) Meeks.

[Editor's note: From coverage at the Long Beach Comic Con, we were also supposed to have a review for Give 'em Hell, Malone but the distributor yanked it at the last moment. Replace this sentence with me cursing them out.]
A film noir in 3D and Sony is releasing it straight to DVD in 2D? “Excuse me?” I hear you exclaim,”Are they out of their highly strung executive minds? What are they thinking?” More on this point anon, but now to the main feature. Thomas Jane’s directorial debut is definitely a must for fans of film noir, but I have to warn you that the plot’s not as strong as the visuals. It should stand up in 2D, the shadows will remain, but it can’t be as good as the 3D. Dark Country is a bit like a very long and wonderfully lit episode of the Twilight Zone. Stylistically it also reminded me of the desert surreal horror world of Dave Payne’s No Man’s Land: the Rise of the Reeker (2008). Wait,

The first trailer for Dark House, starring Re-animator's Jeffrey Combs, has arrived. The clip recently made its debut at our Los Angeles Weekend of Horrors, at a panel which included writer/director Darin Scott (Tales From The Hood) and his cast, including Combs, Rest Stop’s Diane Salinger, Boogeyman 2’s Matt Cohen, Megan Ory, One Tree Hill’s Bevin Prince, Dollhouse’s Erin Cummings and Reeker’s Scott Whyte.

We thought we were finished, but everybody wants to come to our scary shindig next week! Legendary Skinny Puppy singer Nivek Ogre (a.k.a. Oghr) and a few more notable genre folks have joined the lineup of the fast approaching West Coast edition of Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors convention, to be held April 17-19 at the Los Angeles Convention Center (1201 South Figueroa).

Prong mainman Tommy Victor, who was recently interviewed by Fangoria (read it here) will be appearing at Fangoria's Weekend Of Horrors in Los Angeles, April 17-19, 2009. Victor, who recently toured with both Ministry and Danzig, will see the release of Prong's Power Of The Damn Mixxxer (read our review) on May 12th, 2009 via 13th Planet Records.
Tommy will be appearing at the Schecter Guitar Research booth for signing sessions throughout the weekend, along with Skumlove, who's new album The Church Of The New Perversion was recently recorded and co-written with Victor.

The Uninvited (Film Review)

In the mini-pantheon of Asian-horror remakes, The Uninvited winds up being more welcome than last year’s underachieving triumvirate of One Missed Call, The Eye and Shutter. Well-crafted enough that it doesn’t feel like an opportunistic knockoff, it suffers less in comparison to the Korean original, A Tale Of Two Sisters, than from the fact that the story ingredients of both are familiar from numerous past genre films.
I should pause here to note that I wasn’t one of the many who admired Kim Ji-woon’s Sisters; where plenty of viewers saw a subtle suspenser that slowly but surely ratcheted up the creep factor, I saw an enervatingly paced film where not much happened—certainly not much that hadn’t been done before and better in other domestic-fear fare from Korea and Japan—and “paid off” in a show-offy, incoherent series of revelations. It's easy to become a blathering mess around Arielle Kebbel. She's gorgeous. I'll just get that out of the way. But she's not unapproachable. She's the antithesis of that. Her smile sets you at ease, corrects the fuzziness growing in your head which allows you to speak understandable sentences. Luckily, coherent words give way to a pleasant fifteen minute interview when I meet Kebbel at a Westwood hotel. It's December and she's cramming in a bit of press for her supernatural thriller The Uninvited ( review ) before Hollywood breaks for the holidays.
