Rian Johnson's time-warped teenage film noir is a strange but compelling mix of hard-boiled crime film and high school melodrama with its own unique stylized jargon. Some the cast never quite gets the right balance of pose and parody, but Joseph Gordon-Levitt is great as the teen loner turned private eye and Lukas Haas is perfectly weird as a weaselly twentysomething drug lord named The Pin. Nora Zehetner, Noah Segan, Emelie de Ravin, and Richard Roundtree co-star.
