IMDb, RottenTomatoes: Movies of the Decade

At the end of the year, and especially the decade, you’re inundated with enough top lists that they themselves should be ranked. Plenty of other websites and other media outlets have been counting down basically the same best movies, which is partially the reason I spared you the numbered trips down memory lane. (But before I write myself into a hypocritical corner, I’ll still be doing my traditional top movies of the year list. Hint: New Moon isn’t on it)
That being said, here are two definitive lists of note that highlight what was critically lauded this decade on RottenTomatoes.com and what the movie fans and voters on IMDb.com felt were the best the aughts had to offer. Slashfilm compiled the top 20 from Rt and they snatched up the top 25 off IMDb for your look at how the decade fared in movies.
There are a few surprises on both lists,

Decade in Review: 2004 Top Ten

Moving on to 2004. What follows is my original top ten list, based on films released in NYC in 2004. If I have anything new to say that'll be in red after the original text.
Top Ten Runners Up (in descending order): Aviator, Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Mean Girls, Maria Full of Grace, The Five Obstructions, Collateral, Goodbye Lenin!, Birth and Closer Yes, I'm absolutely horrified by the rankings now. Nothing about that ranking feels right now. I am most ashamed that Birth was only at number [cough] 19 in its year. In my self-flattering memory I "almost" put it in the top ten despite the then brutal reviews. I was ahead of my time! Oh well... at least I did actually name it the #1 most underappreciated film of the year. At the time I said...

Bad Lieutenant Producers Draw Jonathan Lethem’s Gun, With Occasional Music

In addition to their many literary charms, the novels of Jonathan Lethem have an unusual superpower: they resist cinematic adaptations with great vigor. Ironic, given the heavy cinematic awareness and influences on his novels. Lethem's latest, Chronic City, even opens with a scene in the offices of the Criterion Collection, and has some entertaining discussion of cinematic masterworks both real and imagined.
For ages, Ed Norton was promising to direct and star in a version of Motherless Brooklyn, as the tourettes-afflicted protagonist Lionel Essrog. There hasn't been any publicly-announced movement on that one in ages, and I'm hoping it isn't dead. And Maria Full of Grace director Joshua Marston is reportedly adapting Fortress of Solitude, but that one has been quiet for a while, too.
Now Gabe and Alan Polsky, the producers behind Werner Herzog's recent Bad Lieutenant, have optioned Lethem's first novel, Gun, With Occasional Music.
THR reports on the option,

What the Gotham Independent Film Awards Giveth, the Spirit Awards Taketh Away

From left: The Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow, Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty, screenwriter Mark Boal, and Jeremy Renner. Last night, the 19th Gotham Independent Film Awards—the first hurdle in the award-season obstacle course leading up to Oscar night—gave Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker the first of what will surely be many accolades in the run-up to the Oscar victory I predicted for her months ago. Bigelow’s white-knuckle Iraq war movie snagged the awards for Best Ensemble Performance (for Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty, Ralph Fiennes, Guy Pearce, David Morse and Evangeline Lilly) and for Best Feature. The nice people at Indiewire have the minute-by-minute rundown. Also noteworthy were Food, Inc.’s victory for Best Documentary—cementing its Oscar front-runner status—and Catalina Saavedra’s win for Best Breakthrough Actor for her performance in the Chilean dramedy La Nana (The Maid). With uncanny consistency, the winner

A montage of performances by the "breakthrough actor" nominees for the Gotham Independent Film Awards. In order, Ben Foster, Patton Oswalt, Jeremy Renner, Catalina Saavedra, Soulemane Sy Savane. And they’re off! With the announcement this afternoon of the nominees for the annual Gotham Independent Film Awards, the four-month frenzy of film-industry backslapping, backscratching, and backstabbing known as Oscar season is officially under way. Organized by the Independent Filmmaker Project (Ifp), the awards are significant insomuch as they are the first of countless encomium-distribution ceremonies to be held across the country in the coming months, from the American Film Institute awards to the Pontchotoula Times Critics Circle Awards. Piled together, these events will constitute so many tea leaves and entrails from which Oscar observers will attempt to prophesy the whims of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Oscar soothsayers pay special attention to the “breakthrough actor” category, the

Jose here with some Foreign Language Film Oscar analysis.
The second to last time Mexico was nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, the movie was made by respected director Carlos Carrera. The film was The Crime of Father Amaro, which arguably banked in on the crush the whole world had developed with rising star Gael García Bernal and of course the controversy factor.
Mexico is counting on Carrera to get them their eighth nomination in the category with his newest film Backyard a thriller which deals with the murders of women in the bordertown of Ciudad Juárez. The "muertas of Juárez" as they've become known, have been a pressing issue for the local authorities for more than a decade now. Very little has been done to solve what amounts to more than 500 crimes (including murders and disappearances).
The film is preachy and sloppy (read my review here) but

Nathaniel Geary's independent film is a sign that not all independent films can be excellent despite the originality. This means that On the Corner always give you the feeling that it could have been better than what we see in the end-result. Hopefully, the film feels quite realistic since it was shot on location in the neighbourhood of Downtown Eastside (a place with serious problems of poverty and drugs) in Vancouver.
Patricia "Angel" Henry (Alex Rice), an Aboriginal who hails from Prince Rupert, lives in Vancouver. In order to survive she turns to prostitution along with her friend Stacey (Katherine Isabelle), a white girl. On one day, Angel encounters Randy (Simon Baker), her brother, and he tells her that he has nowhere to live. Of course, Randy will find a dead-end job, but he'll start selling drugs - by making sure Angel doesn't know it - in the street

The cast for the third installment of the Twilight series, Eclipse, continues to grow. Catalina Sandino Moreno, better known in her starring role of the film Maria Full Of Grace, will be sporting some sharp fangs as the vampire Maria who has ties to Jasper Hale (played by Jackson Rathbone). Going hand in hand with the news is actor Jack Huston (Factory Girl) who is thrown is as Rosalie’s fiancé. With this information right here, it sounds like they’ll go underway with divulging into the backstories of the rest of the Cullen family, particularly on Jasper and Rosalie for the time being.
They join an already filled up cast that includes Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Launter, Bryce Dallas Howard (as Victoria), Ashley Greene just to name a few. As Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge,

Catalina Sandino Moreno is no newcomer to the Hollywood scene.
Moreno is an Oscar-nominated actress with some very impressive work under her belt.
This twenty-eight-year-old actress hails from Bogota, Colombia, and she was the first ever Colombian to be nominated for an Academy Award.
Her husband, David Elwell, is a cinematic lighting technician who worked with her on the film for which she was nominated – Maria Full Of Grace. Moreno won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Lead in that film, as well as the New Generation Award at the London Critics Circle Film Awards and the Imagen Award, amongst others.
Maria Full Of Grace was her first film, if you can believe it, and quite the breakthrough performance for Moreno it was.
After Maria, Moreno took the part as Angie in Journey To The End Of The Night and as Ana in Paris, I Love You before becoming Sylvia for Fast Food Nation,

There's only a few days to go before the third instalment of the Twilight saga begins shooting and the final pieces are falling into place. Catalina Sandino Moreno has now been cast in the role of Maria, Jasper's maker and a baddie vampire in Eclipse. The Colombian actress was nominated for an Oscar for Maria Full Of Grace, where she played the part of a school teacher turned drugs mule, and was most recently seen in Steven Soderbergh's Che. She'll take on the role of Jasper's maker, who turns him into the walking dead before enlisting his help in waging war upon rival vampire 'families', though all this takes place in flashbacks told from Jasper's point of view in the book.Pretty much the only problem we expect Catalina to have fitting in with fans is her name: it just doesn't fit the R-Pattz, JacAbs, K-Stew, J-Hu mould.
