Top 25 Movies of 2009
Introduction, Honorable Mentions and Movies #21 - 25
What's your overall opinion of the movies of 2009? I ask because moving into December I would have called it a downer year, and if you base your opinion of a year's worth of movies on the blockbusters of the year you may be a bit mixed. While films such as Star Trek, District 9 and Avatar found fans all around the world, films such as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Terminator Salvation, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, Angels and Demons and Watchmen were met with mixed-to-highly-negative reviews from critics and filmgoers alike. A lot of money was made, but I think we all know money doesn't always translate to quality.
There were some out of the blue surprises such as The Hangover and Paranormal Activity and Pixar again impressed us all with Up. Personally, it's the smaller to mid-level films

The makers of the Underworld franchise are serious about continuing the war between lycans and death dealers on. Producers Gary Lucchesi, Tom Rosenberg and Richard Wright, as well as original Underworld director Len Wiseman, have hired John Hlavin to pen the story for movie #4. Hlavin served as a story editor on The Shield, the cop procedural series that starred Michael Chiklis. Hlavin also worked on shows like Daybreak, E-Ring and Lax, so he's not a newbie to the scene.
But it might shape up that the next Underworld movie won't have any of the stars associated with the first three films. In short, there may be no Kate Beckinsale and no Rhona Mitra since there's no signed contracts for either actress. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the writer told the outlet that Underworld 4 won't be a prequel like Rise of the Lycans. "It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences,

Since its announcement, there has been tons of buzz surrounding the Warcraft film. Warcraft: Rise of the Lich King has already been put under the reigns of Sam Raimi (Spider-Man franchise, Drag Me to Hell) as it tells the story of Arthas, the young paladin prince who would be corrupted by an evil sword and ultimately become the ruler of the undead legions of Azaroth.
Speaking with MTV News, Raimi said “We want to be really faithful to the game…to the Horde and the Alliance and the mythology that takes place in the game, and the archetypes that the game presents… I think we would try and find touchstones within the game to make it accurate and true and choose one or some of the lands that are portrayed in the game with as much accuracy and authenticity as possible.”
Raimi followed by revealing that Robert Rodat, the

If you've never heard of World of Warcraft, then you're probably living in a deserted cave, underneath a rock, and without an internet connection (in fact, how are you reading this?). WoW holds the Guinness World Record as the most popular Mmorpg (massively multiplayer online role-playing game), with approximately 11.5 million monthly subscribers. Because of its popularity, it's no wonder that WoW is soon headed to the big screen.
Director Sam Raimi, famous for his Evil Dead and Spider-Man films, is currently in pre-production on the WoW movie. He told MTV that rumors about the film being based on the Arthas: Rise of the Lich King novel are false.
We would choose ... something that encompasses lands and characters and storylines, and we would be true to it. But our story may or may not be about one of those central characters.
Raimi said that an original script is being written by Robert Rodat,

Sam Raimi's upcoming movie based on World of Warcraft has taken a significant step forward.
The Spider-Man director tells MTV that Saving Private Ryan screenwriter Robert Rodat will be handling the script for the movie.
Raimi adds that, contrary to previous rumors, the movie will be an original work based on the role-playing game's universe, and not an adaptation of the book Arthas: Rise of the Lich King.
The director explains,
"We would choose...something that encompasses lands and characters and storylines, and we would be true to it. But our story may or may not be about one of those central characters...We want to

A week ago, NewsinFilm ran a story about a title change to the Warcraft movie on IMDb that included the subtitle “Rise of the Lich King.” The details were based on rumor and speculation, but were labeled as such and gave us an opportunity to look at a possible storyline. Other websites (Warcraft and movie alike) are feigning the high ground, but keep in mind they have all run unfounded articles in the past. Ok, now that that’s out of the way, here is the latest from Sam Raimi’s camp:
In a phone interview about today’s DVD release of Drag Me to Hell, MTV had the chance to talk with Raimi, who is directing the live-action fantasy epic for Legendary Pictures, Warner Bros., and Blizzard Entertainment.
Raimi revelead the screenwriter as Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan, The Patriot) and said the intention is to make a faithful

A few days ago there was a rumor floating around that the World of Warcraft film, to be directed by Sam Raimi, would be called Rise of the Lich King and be based off one of the WoW spin-off novels. That was based on the fact that the IMDb listing had changed to reflect that title, and we never ran it for exactly that reason. Anyone can add to and change the IMDb, so it's not to be trusted. Now, however, we know that the script will be an original story, and we know who's writing it.
MTV reports that Saving Private Ryan screenwriter Robert Rodat will write the movie, currently being referred to as simply Warcraft. Raimi says,
We want to be really faithful to the game. We would have our writer, Robert Rodat, really craft an original story within that world that feels like a 'World of WarCraft' adventure.

Okay, maybe not war-torn, exactly, but the guy has cut his teeth on a couple of war movies, namely Saving Private Ryan and The Patriot (not the Steven Seagal one). In a phoner interview with Sam Raimi, MTV got some information about the upcoming Warcraft film out of the director. One of the revelations Raimi gave them was that Oscar nominated Robert Rodat was working on the screenplay, something the screenwriter’s agents confirmed.
Raimi also spoke on the story for the film. It will be an original story based in the game’s universe, contrary to the early rumors that it would be based on the “Arthas: Rise of the Lich King” book.
Says Raimi about his and Rodat’s approach to the film:

Screenwriter Robert Rodat hasn’t written a feature film since 2000’s Mel Gibson war movie “The Patriot”, and before that he wrote the Steven Spielberg World War II Ouchfest known as “Saving Private Ryan”. So what’s next on Rodat’s plate? How about adapting the “World of Warcraft” game for Sam Raimi? Yup, it’s true. MTV got the word from Raimi himself, and a subsequent call to Rodat’s agent has confirmed the news. The guy who wrote “Saving Private Ryan” is currently writing a WoW movie. Wow, indeed.
In the same interview, MTV also found out that the “World of Warcraft” movie will in fact not be based on the novel “Arthas: Rise of the Lich King” as previously believed, but will instead be an original work of fiction courtesy of Rodat. As such, the movie may or may not use any familiar characters from the game,

The sex comedy Women In Trouble seems to have it all -- gorgeous ladies, madcap mishaps, ample cleavage, Josh Brolin doing a dubious British accent, crying, breasts, characters named Elektra Luxx and Holly Rocket, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and a stripper getting hit by a car. If you need more than that to catch your interest, you may be hopeless.
The film comes from Sebastian Gutierrez (Rise, She Creature), who's already in post-production on the sequel. Check out the trailer below or a bigger version at Apple.

Warcraft Movie Details, Including the New Title

Update: The IMDb page has been changed back to simply “Warcraft.” I received no response after contacting Blizzard’s PR department. I left the unbridled rumor and speculation below.
Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures have updated the IMDb page for the upcoming live-action Warcraft movie. The title now reads Warcraft: The Rise of the Lich King and a tentative release of 2011 (likely during the summer). As announced in July, Sam Raimi will be directing the feature film based on the 15-year-old video game franchise.
Right away the subtitle is an obvious reference to the most recent World of Warcraft expansion released in November 2008 titled “Wrath of the Lich King.” It was (and still is) the fastest selling computer game of all time, setting the record at 2.8 million copies in the first 24 hours.
Speculation has begun that it could also be linked to the best-selling Christie Golden novel bearing the same subtitle.

Back in March of this year, we reported on the possible reboot of the Fantastic Four franchise. Then, at the end of last month that rumor became a fact, as 20th Century Fox is, indeed, moving forward with a reboot of Fantastic Four.
As Screen Rant’s Kofi Outlaw predicted back in March, a reboot should and will mean that the four actors who portrayed the titular superheroes in Fantastic Four and its sequel, Rise of the Silver Surfer, will be recast. Although it’s not been talked about/confirmed for Jessica Alba, Ioan Gruffudd or Michael Chiklis, today we get word that Chris Evans won’t be playing The Human Torch again in Fox’s Fantasic Four reboot.
Cinematical got a chance to ask Evans himself about the upcoming FF4 reboot, to which he replied (not in so many words) that we most likely won’t be seeing him

Yesterday's announcement of Disney buying Marvel for $4billion (£2.5million) left superhero fans wondering about two key issues.
Firstly, what would happen to Marvel's existing comic book film slate; secondly, the impact on Marvel characters - such as the Fantastic Four - whose film rights are with other studios.
It 's since been revealed that Paramount will still distribute Marvel's five next superhero movies - Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, The Avengers and Iron Man 3 - although Disney would like to take on this role in future.
It's also confirmed that the deals for characters at other studios will stay in place under the terms set by Marvel and these other studios.
As I explained, 20th Century Fox has movie rights to X-Men, Fantastic Four and Daredevil; Universal has Namor the Sub-Mariner; and Sony has Spider-Man and Ghost Rider.
And hot on the heels of all this, and as if

20th Century Fox has confirmed that it will reboot its Fantastic Four franchise. Rumors of a potential reboot first hit back in March.
Akiva Goldsman (I Am Legend, Hancock, Jonah Hex) has been hired to produce and Michael Green, the executive producer of TV’s “Heroes” and writer of “Green Lantern,” will pen the script for the new “Fantastic Four.”
The 2005 “Fantastic Four” and 2007 sequel “Rise of the Silver Surfer” were directed by Tim Story and starred Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis and Ioan Gruffudd. Since the deals for the reboot are just getting made, it is unclear if any of them will return and Fox was unwilling to comment on the development.
Though Marvel Entertainment owns and finances properties like Iron Man and Thor, Fox controls Fantastic Four in perpetuity — as long as it continues making the films. Fox has the same arrangement on Marvel Comics properties X-Men,

It should come as no surprise that in addition to the big announcements yesterday, especially the Disney Marvel deal, there was other news. One such piece that may please many Marvel fans out there who were less than thrilled with the way the first two movies turned out is the late breaking revelation that Fox is rebooting The Fantastic Four franchise. But wait, don’t get too excited because Akiva Goldsman, the man who wrote the two worst Batman films in history (Batman and Robin and Batman Forever) and the feature film version of Lost In Space featuring Matt Leblanc is in charge of the reboot for the studio.
Fortunately, he’s not actually writing the script and is just a producer. Michael Green, co-executive producer of Heroes, co-writer of the new Green Lantern and creator of the short-lived series Kings is the one tapped to write the new script.

The news of Disney's $4bn acquisition of Marvel is still ringing in our ears, but Variety has a reminder that it will be some time indeed before Marvel's entire canon resides permanently at the House of Mouse. Fox control the rights to the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Daredevil and Silver Surfer for as long as they continue to knock out films (so does that mean they're in danger of losing Daredevil?). And they've just announced a reboot for the Ff.The primary-coloured, kid-friendly Ff films are easily the series that, more than any other of the current slew of comicbook properties, most faithfully reflects its 60s origins. The 2005 original garnered shaky reviews but mega box-office. 2007's follow-up, Rise of the Silver Surfer, did similar business, and gained the consensus that it was one of those sequels that's actually better than the original. So the series would seem to have been moving in the right direction,

Amidst the shocker that Disney purchased Marvel for $4 billion, comes the news that 20th Century Fox is overhauling one of its popular Marvel franchises, "Fantastic Four."
This made me happy. I'm not a big fan of what director Tim Story and company did with the previous "Fantastic Four" films namely 2005's "Fantastic Four" and 2007's "4: Rise of the Silver Surfer."
But this change is necessary for a better adaptation of the comic book series. Now, Fox has hired Akiva Goldsman as producer of the reboot, and Michael Green is set to write the script.
Green is the co-executive producer of NBC's "Heroes" and he also co-wrote the upcoming "Green Lantern."
The future of the stars of the previous "Fantastic Four" films -- Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis -- is unclear. But if this is going to be a reboot, I think Fox should hire new
